~ 2014 GATEWAYS COMPETITION ~ Awards were presented Saturday October 11, for Southern Arts Societies Gateways to the South annual art competition and exhibit. Featured prominently in the exhibit are landscapes, historical sites, and the people and places that reflect our Southern history and culture. Local artists have entered over seventy works of art in this years show. Judge for the exhibit was Seymour Simmons, III associate professor, department of fine arts at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Mr. Simmons selected first, second, third place awards along with three merit awards. The exhibit is open to view October 1 thru November 14. Winners with comments by Mr. Simmons: First prize: Elizabeth McAdams Windswept Barn, Pinnacle, NC, Photograph. This photograph captures beautifully a scene I have always found fascinating: lonely, old, weathered, and abandoned farm buildings set in a barren landscape. With its overall crispness of focus and incredible wealth of little things to look at, this image holds our attention and invites us to come back again and again, almost compelling us to discover more and more about its subject. At the same time, the composition integrates the building and surrounding trees with the earth and sky, while the striking cloud pattern against the tree limbs and roof top seems almost to suggest that they are all made of the same substance. Besides these visual impressions, we get other imagined sensations: the rough, raw texture of the wood, and, with the combination of moving clouds and bending trees, we can almost hear the wind moaning or whistling through the gaps in the wood. Second prize: Susan Panzarella Lots o Pots, Pastel. This big, bold pastel drawing is as much a statement about the joy of art making as it is about love of the materials themselves. Its strong colors and energetic marks combine with the in your face placement of the pots -- all in the foreground. With its variety of shapes and patterns, the picture stands out strikingly even from far across the room. Up close, you can appreciate the passion with which she laid down the medium, and imagine what it was like to revel in all that wonderful messiness. continued on second page.

Comments Mr. Simmons: Although evidently a landscape, this small but compelling piece could almost count as an abstract field painting with the large flat land form occupying 80% of the image, against a thin band of blue sky, separated by a deep red horizon that seems a little like its bleeding. Along with its color/shape relationships, the painting is enriched by its engaging diversity of textural qualities, inviting the viewer to imagine how it was made and even to want to touch the surface. There is a lot going on in this piece despite the fact that there are only two things in it you can name: land and sky. Merit awards went to Lin Venhuizen, Paul Shafranski and Lucy Warlick. POTTERY Ongoing pottery classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Details call Carol Picard at 704-629-5062.
