Graders Receive
Donated Dictionaries to Help Further Education

Part of AT&T Pioneers 9
th
Annual Dictionaries for Success Project;
Students Also Learn About Legislative Process from State Sen. Bob Wirch

KENOSHA, Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Nearly 385 third graders from 7 elementary schools in
Kenosha received their own personal dictionaries from the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers this week as part of a
statewide project designed to improve childhood literacy and student reading scores.

Students at South Port Elementary School also learned about the legislative process from State Senator
Bob Wirch (D-Kenosha), their legislator at the State Capitol in Madison. Senator Wirch talked with the
students about the legislative process in Madison, how a bill becomes a law, and how the dictionary will be a
lifelong learning tool that will help them in their academic and work careers.

Investing in education is one of the most important investments we can make in both our children and the
future of our great state, said Senator Wirch. Were fortunate to have excellent schools in Kenosha County
and great community volunteers like the AT&T Pioneers so dedicated to education. These dictionaries will
be a great building block for these students as they continue to grow and learn.

During the school visits, local AT&T Pioneers showed the students what information they can find in the
dictionary. They also demonstrated how the books can be used to learn vocabulary development, word
pronunciation, the different meanings of words, and how to compare and contrast words.

At AT&T, we are committed to helping advance the education of our young people, said Scott T.
VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin. We are proud to partner with local educators and Senator
Wirch to provide our students with the tools they need to become our future leaders.

The AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers are donating 6,500 dictionaries to students at 130 schools statewide as part
of its 9
th
annual Dictionaries for Success program. The Pioneers are a local organization of AT&T
employees and retirees who are dedicated to volunteering their time to various community causes.

The following schools in Kenosha are among schools statewide that are receiving donated dictionaries from
the AT&T Pioneers this year: Frank Elementary, Brass Community Elementary, J efferson Elementary, All
Saints North, McKinley Elementary, All Saints South, and South Port Elementary.
