ItisthorttohavestartedwiththeancientPaganfestivalofSamhain,when
peoplewouldlightbonfiresandwherecostumestowardofroamingghosts.

SamhainwasalsoknownasTheDayoftheDeadandmanyWiccansand
modernPagansaroundtheworldstillcelebratethisholiday.Althoughit
soundsscary,TheDayoftheDeadisahappyholiday.Itisthedaythatthe
solesofdeadpeoplecomebacktoEarth.Therefore,inPaganreligionsitisnot
aboutscarythings.Itisaboutremberingfamilyorfreindswhohavedied.In
MexicoandotherLatinAmericancountrys,DadelosMuertostheDayofthe
Deadhonoursdeceasedlovedonesandancestors.

Intheeighthcentury,PopeGregoryIIImadenovember1statimetohonourall
saintsandmartyrs,witchbecameknownasAllSaintsDay.Thisholiday
includedsumofthetraditionsofSamhain.

Halloween.

Overtime,Halloweenevolvedintoapopularcommunitybasedevent,
includeingchildfriendlyactivitiessuchastrickortreating.

OntheknightofHalloween,children
dressupincostumesandgotopeoples'
homessaying"Trickortreat!"toaskfour
sweets.Peoplesometimesdressupas
ghosts,witches,goblinsandotherscary
thingsforHalloweenandhavepartysor
gathertogethertotellghoststoriesor
playtricksoneachother.

Everyoctober,carvedpumpkinsappearonporches,inwindowsanddoorsteps
intheUK,UnitedStatesandotherpartsoftheworld.Theseorangefruits,are
decoratedwithghoulishfacesandilluminatedbuycandles.Theyarecalled
Jackolanternsandtheyarethoughttowarnoffghostsandspirits.

ThetraditionofdecoratingjackolanternsoriginatedinIreland,werethey
usedlargeturnipsandpotatoestomakescaryHalloweenfaces.Irish
immigrantstookthetraditiontoAmerica;homeofthepumpkin,whereit
becameanimportantpartofHalloweenfestivitiesandwaslateralsobrought
totheUK.
