An early 1st century wall painting near Petra, Jordan shows

a transverse fute player the earliest known evidence of a

transverse fute so close to Europe. This discovery suggests that
the transverse fute came from India and China into European
musical culture via Petra.

You might recognize the early Irish harp
from famous beer labels, but this 1,000
year-old iconic instrument nearly went
extinct! Fewer than 20 true early Irish
harps survive today.
With the rise of universities in the 13th century, the study of music
was largely replaced by Aristotelian logic and natural science.
In the era of the Enlightenment,
Turkish operas flled European
stages. Audiences may have laughed
at comedic tropes of the Oriental
other, but they also recognized the
power of the Ottoman Empire.
Women in the antebellum U.S. were often
seen as incapable of concert-level musical
performances because they usually played at
home or in church. But, studies reveal that there
was very little difference between home salon
music and concert programs!
In the wake of Mexicos Revolution, composer
Manuel M. Ponce helped transform national
culture through cancin, or song.
Record companies separated music of the American
South into the racially divided styles of Rhythm & Blues
and Country & Western, but the musical elements of each
style were deeply intertwined.
How did legends like Sonny Clark,
John Coltrane, and Lee Konitz
harness the expressive power of
jazz music? They mastered the
eighth note.
Post-1990s rock music broke with the traditions of the genre
by ending songs with a unique, memorable element the
terminal climax rather than a repeated chorus.

meaning by embracing the

Spanishness during a long
period of intense nationalism.
The Clash released London Calling in
1979 as the British punk movement
seemed to be imploding. The album

musical values.
