Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association (DLWCA) April 2014

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

It looks like winter may finally be behind us, but the
warmer spring temperatures have also heralded the
start of "pothole season". Because we had a very
wet winter of heavy snow and rain, along with several
freeze-thaw cycles, you may notice a lot of potholes in
the roads. Potholes occur when the pavement is
weakened by moisture seeping into the pavement,
freezing, expanding and then thawing. Traffic driving
over the roads loosens the pavement further, and it
eventually crumbles and pops out, causing a pothole.
If you see a pothole you may report the problem to
VDOT by calling 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623).
VDOT will investigate each report and will schedule
repairs as soon as possible.
Despite all the snow days, Fairfax County Spring Break
will be coming up on April 14-18.
There are lots of activities happening in Dunn Loring
Woods in the next few weeks. Cub Pack 1132 and
their parents will be delivering the new 2014-2015
DLWDA directories, Electric Sunday is coming up at
the end of the month, and we will elect new board
members at our May 20
th
Membership Meeting. It is
also time for our Fourth Annual Scholarship Contest
and we are looking for volunteers to help plan the
50
th
anniversary of the DLWCA.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Mary

their neighbors. Our deepest sympathy goes to their
three daughters.

2014/15 DUNN LORING DIRECTORY

This year our Directory will be delivered by the Cub
Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 1132 and their parents.
DLWCA assumed the sponsorship of the Cub Scout
Pack over two years ago and this is a service that the
Pack provides for us. The Pack now has a new Cub
master, Tom McMillen, who relieved Frank Piazza
earlier this year. They also have new Pack Committee
Chairman, Megan Allwine, who is coordinating this
service project. Thank you to both of you from all the
residents of DLW for your dedication to the Cub Scout
Program. Please give a big round of applause to the
Cubs and their parents who will walk their assigned
routes in the Dunn Loring Woods Development.

The weather this past month has not been conducive
to delivering the directories. Our last attempt to get
the Directories delivered was Sunday the 30
th
of
March and we had the weather, (rain/snow/sleet)
arriving at the Cubs appointed delivery time, needless
to say it was postponed again. We are hoping for
sunshine and 70 degree weather for Sunday, April 6
th,

which will be our next attempt to get the Directories
out to you.

If you did not receive your DLWCA Membership
Directory or, if upon reading it, you found a mistake
with the spelling of your name, phone number, etc.,
please call Pat Stout, the Membership Chairperson,
at 703-573-9293 or email at
Nanabumpa2545@aol.com.

DLWCA ANNUAL ELECTIONS

The annual election of DLWCA officers and board
members will take place at the May 20 annual
membership meeting. Some of the existing officers
and board members have diligently served on the
board and/or as officers for a number of years and are
ready for a break. Serving as a volunteer in the
DLWCA is a rewarding way to contribute to your
community and make a difference, and it doesnt take
a lot of time. Please give participation careful
consideration to serving on the board and contact
Melvin Rose at 703-573-2076 or any of the other
board members, officers or committee leaders listed
in your new DLWCA directory for information on
positions that may interest you.

COLLEGE BOUND IN 2014???

Last year Emily Garverick and
Ryan Barrett were the
winners of our DLWCA
scholarships. It is time to
reward two more students
living in Dunn Loring Woods
with a scholarship. Children, grandchildren, great-grand
children and step-children living with a Dunn Loring Woods
resident and planning to attend college by fall/winter 2014
are eligible. You need not be a 4.0 student but have a
strong desire to further your education. Both young
women and men are encouraged to apply.

Because of spring break coming up, we have extended the
deadline to Friday, May 9. Information on eligibility and
criteria can be found on pages 3 and 4 of this newsletter
and also on the Dunn Loring Woods website at
http://www.dlwca.org

DLW NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

Dunn Loring Woods has long been a community with
a reputation of neighbors helping neighbors. This is
most recently exemplified on Marquette Street.
One of DLWs first residents (since 1961), Mary Burke,
who lives on Marquette Street. with her husband, Ed,
suffered a serious illness in February and was
hospitalized for a time and is now recovering at
home. Over this period, the Burkes neighbors have
stepped up to help by providing meals, running
errands and giving other assistance. During the past
snow storms, neighbors and their older children kept
the Burkes sidewalk and driveway cleared of snow.
Fortunately Mary is now on the road to recovery and
doing well. However, she and Ed want to express,
publicly, their thanks and gratitude to all their
neighbors for their assistance in a time of need and
their continuing help and friendship.

Hats off to Marquette Street as neighbors helping
neighbors in DLW.
