Ultraconservtive Revival
T
he German think tank German-Foreign-Pol-
icy.com has accused Joseph Ratzinger, Bene-
dict xvi Pope Emeritus, of deliberately working
to revive the anti-Jewish elements of Roman Ca-
tholicism. Te history of Benedicts pontifcate shows that
it has been among the central goals of Joseph Ratzinger,
under the theological motto of a De-secularization of the
Catholic Church, to push back carefully the moderniza-
tion initiated in the 1960s step by step (March 1).
German-Foreign-Policy.com goes on to observe that
among the goals of the Benedict pontifcate have been the
consolidation of right-wing Catholicism, which was pressed
forward by Benedict xviand embodies acceptance of a
revival of old traditions of Catholic anti-Semitism.
One obvious move to challenge secularism within its
main Germanic hotbed was the appointment in 2010 by
Pope Benedict of the extreme right-wing, anti-Jew Arch-
bishop Rainer Woelke as archbishop of Berlin. Shortly afer
that appointment he was created a cardinal. Woelke has
strong links with the aggressive rightist Catholic
movements Opus Dei and the extreme rightist
group Priest Fraternity St. Pius X.
From its sources, German-Foreign-Policy.com
has already deduced that the desecularization
initiatives and progressive move to the right
within the church will continue under the next
pope, infuenced by the pope emeritus looking
over his shoulder: Observers believe that Joseph Ratzinger
and some of his closest collaborators will also have a strong
infuence in the Vatican in the future.
Te estimated 25,000 Jews currently resident in Berlin
may yet feel the hot breath of the citys anti-Semitic history

In fact, this is a prophesied reality for the immediate

of the fnal act of the old Holy Roman Empire as it rises
to fulfll that great prophecy that heralds the return of the
Prince of Peace to institute the Makers government of
peace on Earth forever! (Revelation 19).

Syrian opposition was disappointed by
not receiving weapons, this is a huge
contribution that, as Kerry said, could
change Assads calculation about
his ability to stay in power. President
Assad even conceded that there was
nothing non-lethal about the aid,
saying the intelligence, communica-
tion and fnancial assistance being
provided is very lethal. In March 2011,
the Syrian rebels were merely a bunch
of violent demonstrators. By Decem-

Law-making Dubbed
Infernal, Undemocratic

russels is awash with stories
about the unhealthy infuence of
lobbyists on law-makers. But as big
a scandal, say some experts, is the
increasing amount of legislation made
with little scrutiny at all.
Te lack of oversightdespite the
EU capitals 754 meps and thousands
of lobbyistsis down to the rising
use of so-called secondary legislation
coupled with a greater tendency to
fast-track primary laws.
Te twin efect has been to make
much of EU law-making untrans-
parent and unpredictable, says
Daniel Gueguen, himself a lobbyist
and long-time expert on so-called
comitology.
Te problem boils down to the
current trend of making basic EU laws
very general.
When EU leaders signed the
Lisbon Treaty, they were not aware of
what was in it, [Gueguen] suggests.
Secondary legislation is either a
general delegated act or a more techni-
cal implementing act enabling the
European Commission to respectively
tweak laws or decide on how they
should be implemented.

THE TRUMPET WEEKLY
A
s horrid sex scandals envelop the
Roman Catholic Church, a debate
has arisen about the practice of cleri-
cal celibacy and the right of Catholic
priests to marry and raise a family.
Some prominent conservative
Catholics are demanding the Vatican
rethink its position on celibacy and
start giving priests the choice to marry.
Britains most senior Catholic, Cardinal Keith OBrien, on
the heels of his retirement amid allegations of sexual impro-
priety, recently told the bbc, Id be very happy if [priests]
had the opportunity of considering whether they should
be married. Many priests have found it very difcult to
cope with celibacy and felt the need of a companion, of a
woman, to whom they could get married and raise a family.
Lets consider the biblical view of celibacy and the right
of priests to marry. God created and endorses marriage, for
all humans. In Genesis 2:18 we read, And the Lord God
said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will
make him an help meet for him. God created Eve, and He
created marriage between Adam and Eve.
Carry on through the Old Testament, noting great
fgures like Noah, Abraham, Moses, King David. God
worked powerfully in the lives of these great men, all of
whom were married.
Te New Testament also overfows with examples of
God endorsing marriage and family. Most notably, the
Apostle Peterleader of the frst-century Church and
namesake of the Petrine doctrine, the fundamental Catho-
lic doctrine establishing papal primacywas married
(Matthew 8:14).
In 1 Corinthians 9:5, the Apostle Paul in a short sermon
on the life and work of an apostle asks, Have we not power
to eat and to drink? Have we not power to lead about a
sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren
of the Lord, and Cephas?
In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul endorses marriagespecifcally,
sex within marriage, as a means of averting sexual wrong-
doing. To avoid fornication, he writes, let every man
have his own wife, and let every woman have her own hus-
band. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevo-
lence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. If the
Vatican followed the instruction of their beloved St. Paul
and allowed priests to marry, countless innocent children
and adults could have been protected from sexual abuse at
the hands of celibate priests.
In 1 Timothy 3, God outlines the qualities to search for in
a potential priest, or minister. Notice it does not say, ordain
a man prepared to live a celibate life. Verse 2 says, A bishop
then must be blameless, the husband of one wife . In most
cases, God expects a minister in His service to be married. A
loyal, supportive wife is an asset to the mans ministry.
Some Christians will invoke the example of Christ and
argue that we are to follow His example of celibacy and
apparent abstention from marriage. First, it might come
as a surprise, but Jesus Christ was in fact married. He
was in a marriage covenant with ancient Israel (Exodus
19). Jesus couldnt marry while on Earth because he was
still in that marriage covenant with ancient Israel, which
ended when he died.
Moreover, if you study the Scriptures its clear that Jesus
actually intends to marry. Paul, in another frank endorse-
ment of marriage, explains the roles of the husband and
wife: Tis is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ
and the church (Ephesians 5:32). Jesus Christ at His
Second Coming will be married!
Tis marriage, between Jesus and the bride His Father
calls and prepares for Him, is the marriage referred to in
Revelation 19:7: Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor
to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife
hath made herself ready. God is clear on this subject from
one end of the Bible to the other. God created marriage, He
endorses marriage and family for human beings, including
ministersand He even desires that His own Son marry!

More Calls for Germany to Boost Support for Syrian Rebels
Jeremiah Jacques | March 8
C
alls in Berlin for Germany to assume a greater role
in helping rebels topple the regime of Syrian President
Bashar Assad are becoming louder, the German-Foreign-
Policy.com think tank reported on Monday. Berlins
policymakers are also planning German-led interventions
in areas where Assads regime has withdrawn, to prevent
anti-West Islamists from taking root in Syrian soil.
Late last month, Lothar Rhl urged readers of Germa-
nys leading conservative daily to support a Western mili-
tary intervention. Days later, the chairman of the Munich
Security Conference started pushing for German weapons
deliveries to rebels. Ten the cdu/csu parliamentary group
called for measures to be taken to train Syrian militiamen.
Berlin has already responded to such calls by authorizing
plans for the EU to provide military training to anti-Assad
groups. Europe also agreed to supply Syrian rebels with ar-
mored vehicles, night vision gear and other equipment, and
is providing fnancial aid packages to rebel forces.
Te troublefrom the viewpoint of many in Berlinis
that afer the rebel groups oust Assads forces from a given
area, they ofen keep on pushing at others.
In December, the United Nations said the number of ref-
ugees feeing violence in Syria might reach 1 million by June.
Wednesdaythree months ahead of that predictionthat
troubling milestone was attained. Many of these refugees
are Christians and other minorities who were driven from
areas controlled by anti-Assad Islamists. Reports of torture
and expulsions are increasing, especially in cities like Ras al
Ayn, where Islamists have driven all Christians out. Germa-
nys foreign-policy establish-
ment says the West must
not only arm the rebels to
help them defeat Assad, but
then must oversee control of
the areas these rebels wrest
from Assads grip to prevent
such atrocities from happen-
ing. Germanys prestigious
Bertelsmann Foundation said
German intervention needs
to happen quickly.
Why is Germany becoming
so interested in Syria, when it
seemed to have little concern
about the Libyan revolution?
Brad Macdonald wrote in
April 2012 that its because the
opportunity presented to Ger-
many by the confict meshes
with Berlins larger geopoliti-
cal and strategic ambitions
for the Middle East! One
of Germanys primary aims
in the Middle East is to develop an axis with Middle Eastern

join a German-led power bloc opposing Iran. It could hap-
pen as soon as Assad is toppled.

Britain was lef isolated yet again as
the European Commission voted
26 to 1 to impose restrictions on the
size of the bonuses that bankers can
receive. Under the new rules, bankers
will be able to receive up to 100 per-

to 200 percent if approved by a vote
of shareholders. But Britain fears that
the cap will drive the most talented
bankers away from London and to
alternative fnancial centers like New

poor performance, as bankers are less
likely to be rewarded through bonus-
es, which they receive when they do

ussian nuclear forces conducted a major exercise last

Te exercise raised concerns inside the Pentagon and
with the U.S. European Command because it was the larg-
est exercise of its kind in 20 years and involved heightened
alert status of Russian nuclear forces.
Te nuclear drills were part of other military maneuvers
in Russia carried out between February 17 and February 21.
Te exercises followed a recent surge in Russian stra-
tegic bomber fights that include a recent circling of the
U.S. Pacifc island of Guam by two Tu-95 Bear bombers
and simulated bombing runs by Tu-95s against Alaska and
California in June and July.
Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Wesley P. Miller sought to
play down the nuclear exercise but declined to comment
on the movement of nuclear weapons and whether nuclear
forces went on a heightened state of alert.
However, a U.S. ofcial said the exercise was a concern
within the U.S. national security community because of
the scale of the exercise and the number of weapons being
moved. Certainly its a concern when you have this kind of
exercise going on, this ofcial said.
Te ofcial said another worry is that Russia appears to be
increasing the readiness of its nuclear forces at a time when
the U.S. nuclear complex is in urgent need of upgrading
and the military is facing sharp automatic defense cuts that
could afect U.S. nuclear forces readiness in the future.

still remember how violent Russia was in World War II, and
Russia is a close neighbor with massive piles of nuclear

T
he U.S. is heading for a kinder,
gentler Department of Defense that
will have serious negative consequences
for American security, according to a
February 22 Wall Street Journal article by Mackubin Tomas
Owens, senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
Akin to ancient Israel, America long ago made its deci-
sion not to rely on God to fght its battles, but rather to rely
on its own strength.
Tat being the case, a fundamental understanding of
human nature would lead any reasonable mind to conclude
that the nation had better acquire a defensive capability
more than equal to the strongest of its enemies.
Te shock of Pearl Harbor brought this fact home to the
nation back in 1941. It was this realization that impelled
U.S. defense policy toward global dominance under Presi-
dent Reagan, resulting in the moral and economic collapse
of Americas major enemy at the time, the ussr.
Under the present Utopianist U.S. administration, U.S.
military power is being hollowed out, gutted from within.
Its present generation of generals are a far cry from those
who led the U.S. to victory in World War ii.
Speaking of the appointment of a yes-man/hatchet-man
as the likely next secretary of defense whose job is to do his
worst at the Defense Department, Owens muses on a com-
parison between Sen. Chuck Hagels nomination for that
post and a replay of President Harry Trumans appointment
of Louis Johnson as secretary of defense in early 1949. Like
Mr. Obama, Truman was committed to funding his domes-
tic programs at the expense of military spending (ibid).
Such a policy is currently having similar results to those
that resulted from President Trumans stance on defense
a reduction in the general morale of servicemen and ac-
celerated attrition of its leadership.
God gave us the most colossal national power and
wealth ever possessed by any nation or empire. Already
He has taken away that power from Britain. Before World
War i it was the worlds greatest power. Today it is a second-
or third-rate powerno longer one of the world powers.
But the United States still possesses that power! We are the
worlds greatest power! Yet we are afraid to use it.
God has taken from us the pride of our power! We are

hours of criticism of Mr. Obamas compliance with the U.S.
Constitution.
Criticism within the U.S. has focused on the implications
for terror suspects who are also U.S. citizens, afer Anwar
al-Awlaki, a radical cleric born and educated in the U.S.,
was killed in Yemen in 2011. Te administration claims it
has the legal authority to assassinate Americans provided
that they are a senior al Qaeda operative posing an immi-
nent threat and it would be infeasible to capture them.
Civil liberties campaigners accuse the president and
his aides of awarding themselves sweeping powers to deny
Americans their constitutional rights without oversight
from Congress or the judiciary.
Mr. Holder stressed in his letter that the prospect of a
president considering the assassination of an American
citizen on U.S. soil was entirely hypothetical and un-
likely to occur. Yet it is possible, I suppose, to imagine an
extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary
and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable
laws of the United States for the president to authorize
the military to use lethal force within the territory of the
United States, he wrote.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, told him his
reference to extraordinary circumstances such as Septem-
ber 11 or the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor were extremely
concerning. It is imperative that we understand the opera-
tional boundaries for use of such force, Mr. Grassley said.
American citizens have a right to understand when their life
can be taken by their government absent due process.

Time magazine recently [said] the U.S. Constitution was
under siege, but not in a crisis. I totally disagree. The Consti-
tution is on its deathbed. But almost nobody understands or
knows why. We are experiencing a constitutional earth-
quake, and most of our people dont even know ityet. Your
future is being changed for you, and often you have no input.
This process is sure to lead to anarchy! That is why you and I
should be deeply concerned.

With millions still out of work,
companies face little pressure to raise
salaries, while productivity gains
allow them to increase sales without
adding workers.
Te result has been a golden age for

n Chicago morgue to post photos
of unclaimed bodies online
For the frst time, the Cook County
medical examiners ofce in Chicago
has posted photos of unclaimed
bodies on its website in an efort to
identify them. As drug cartels and
street gangs spread throughout the
city, the death toll has risen to a
point where it is becoming hard to
identify all the dead. Were hoping
that that photo can trigger some-
bodys memory, that you know, that
person grew up down the street
from me, or that person used to live
nearby and I know where their mom
is, says Cook County Medical Ex-
aminer Dr. Steve Cina. Te program
is generating controversy because of
the graphic images, but for the sake
of people missing loved ones, ofcials
believe this is a decision where the
ends justify the means. Sadly, the
death toll in cities across America
will only rise as the consequences
of family breakdown and economic
mismanagement increase.

win massive support
Te United Kingdom Independence
Party (ukip) rocked Britains politi-
cal establishment by winning nearly
one third of the votes in a by-election
in Eastleigh held February 28. ukip
came just a few percentage points
away from putting its frst-ever poli-
tician in Britains Parliament. At the
general election in 2010, it received
3.6 percent of the vote in the dis-
trict. Tis time, in a vote to replace
a cabinet minister on his way to
jail, it won 27.8 percent. Te Liberal
Democrats held the seat with 32.6
percent. Te Conservative Party was
beaten into third place. With a little
bit more organization, it could have
won. Te Liberal Democrats only
succeeded due to their lead in postal
votes. When it came to votes cast on
the day, ukip was in front. Tis is
just the latest in a surge of support
for the party. It has come second in
these types of elections four times
in under two years. Why the surge
in popularity? Te European Union.
Being anti-EU used to be reserved for
the pub bore. Now its mainstream.

U
.S. intelligence has recently said Chinese cyberat-
tacks wreak so much havoc on American companies
they threaten the nations global economic competitiveness.
Yet its rare to hear about severe damage in the reports
companies fle with the government. Te number of dis-
closures and the extent of the damage they reveal doesnt
even begin to bear out the picture of rampant cyberattacks
painted by Americas intelligence community.
Why the discrepancy? Some corporations dont know they
are being hacked. In other cases, executives believe revealing
a breech would invite other attacks, so they keep mum about
their companys sof digital underbelly. Other times, frms
fear that disclosures would rattle customer confdence, re-
ducing stock values, and potentially incurring legal liabilities.
Te Chinese market holds the most lucrative business
opportunities for many U.S. frms. American tycoons dont
want to risk a loss of business from the worlds largest trade
nation. Tey prioritize profts above patriotism. Tey want
to turn another check, so they turn the other cheek.
Ten there is the competition. Many executives fear that
if they upset China by disclosing Beijings attacks, not only
could they lose Chinas business, but they could lose it to
their American rivals. If competitor duos like PepsiCo and
Coca-Cola would collaborate on a united front, they could
pressure the Chinese markets in a way no single corporate
entity could. But American frms ofen view and treat each
other as adversaries more menacing than Chinese cyber-
terrorists.
Te god of many U.S. policymakers and businessmen is
the dollar. Tose who worship in its skyscrapers are ofen
willing to sacrifce national security on the altar of proft.
Te Obama administration has refused to so much as
name China as its enemy in this cyberwar. We were told
that directly embarrassing the Chinese would backfre,
an unnamed intelligence ofcial said. It would only make
[the Chinese] more defensive and more nationalistic.
American leaders cringe at the thought of an upset China.
Te U.S. has the power to pummel China with conven-
tional attacks or cyberattacks. Why not use it? China is
the debt-ridden U.S.s biggest creditor. Americas suicidal
spending and borrowing habits have helped to break the
nations will to use its might. American leaders hope that if
they keep quiet, the attacks will stop. But Chinese policy-
makers see Americas refusal to confront assaults as the
weakness that it is. Beijing sees that America no longer has
the stomach for confrontation, so the Chinese commit acts
of war without fear of retaliation.
Te broken will, greed and fear of U.S. leaders are all
indications of the countrys rapid decline.

Riot Alert: Look Out
Argentina, South Africa
ECONOMIC POLICY JOURNAL | February 28

f history teaches us anything,
it is that infation usually ends in
violence. Te Johannesburg-based
economic research house etm Analyt-
ics puts out a monthly riot alert
based on the speed with which coun-
tries are debasing their currencies. It
has been scarily accurate in predicting
where trouble is most likely to erupt.
Te research shows that those
countries printing money the fastest
are also those experiencing the most
social unrest. etm measures infation
in terms of the Continuous Com-
modities Index (cci), which refects
infationary trends almost imme-
diately on the basis that monetary
expansion debases the currency and
increases the prices of commodity
imports such as fuel and food.
Look whos on the danger list:
including the worlds worst monetary
abusers: (see graph).
For all the press acreage given to
the political causes of violence in
countries like Syria and Egypt, it is
difcult to side-step the obvious com-
mon denominator: infation. A 10 per-
cent rise in food prices can transform
a hungry man into an angry man.
As the accompanying graph shows,
Syria is the worlds most rapacious
money printer. It is also currently one
of the most dangerous places in the
world. No surprise there.

Dow Jones Smashes Record:
Now What?
T
he Dow Jones set a new record on
Tuesday. Market commentators say
this new record high is a big sign the
economy is on the mend.
But is it possible that it signals
something much more ominous?
Consider the bastion of American
consumerism: Walmart. Bloomberg reported leaked e-
mails from Walmart executive ofcers indicating the worst
start to sales in seven years!
In case you havent seen a sales report these days,
February sales are a total disaster, wrote Jerry Murray,
Walmarts vice president of fnance and logistics. Cameron
Geiger, senior vice president of Walmart U.S. replenish-
ment, wrote in a separate e-mail: Where are all the cus-
tomers? And wheres their money?
Both executives went on to blame the 2 percent in-
crease in social security payroll taxes for the companys
plummeting sales.
But here is the point: If Walmart shoppers are broke
then we are all in trouble.
Walmart is a good gauge of the economy simply because
it makes up such a huge proportion of Americas economic
output. More than $1 out of every $45 spent in the coun-
try is spent at Walmartthat is more than 2 percent of
Americas total gross domestic product. And because of its

CURRENCY: JAN 2010JAN 2013
scale and copious amounts of data, company executives
actually have better data about the economy than many
economic forecasters.
So if Walmart executives are worried, people should
pay attention.
So why does everyone seem to be piling in to the stock
market if retailers are struggling and everyday consumers
are more stretched than ever?
Since 2008, the Federal Reserve has embarked upon the
greatest money-creating scheme in the history of the world.
All told, the Federal Reserve has created almost $3 trillion
out of thin air. Trough the multiplier efect, it has created
much more.
At frst, much of the money went to prop up the fnan-
cial systemto keep it from imploding. Now the Federal
Reserve is attempting to prevent the economy from tanking
and unemployment from soaring.
But all is not going as planned.
Debt-bloated America is already saturated with debt. All
the extra money being created by the Federal Reserve isnt
being put to productive use, but is instead fueling specula-
tion and the markets. Just like the previous two times the
Federal Reserve tried to avoid the consequences of a reces-
sion (dot-com and housing bubbles), low interest rates and
easy money are infating a massive bubble.
Te booming stock marketinstead of heralding a
new age of prosperitymay actually be signaling that the
real economy is on life support, and that dangerous new
wealth-destroying bubbles are forming.

Venezuela: Whats Ahead After the Death of Hugo Chvez
Jeremiah Jacques | March 5
Next up is Argentina, under the lead-
ership of the erratic but populist Chris-
tina Fernandez de Kirchner. Since 2010,
Kirchner made numerous attempts
to reduce central bank independence,
increase the governments balance sheet
and devalue the peso. Kirchner also
introduced price controls, increased
taxes and nationalized key companies.
All this, says etm Analytics, has set
the economy up for another bout of
hyperinfation. At the same time, there
has been widespread social unrest noted
in Argentina in recent months.
It is also worth noting that Kirch-
ner is engaging Britains Prime Min-
ister David Cameron in a glare fght
over the Falkland Islands.
V
enezuelan President Hugo Chvez died on Tuesday
afernoon afer a long battle against cancer, leaving the
world to wonder who will become the next leader of the oil-
rich Latin American nation.
Venezuela could undergo a period of instability followed
by a political transition on a scale the nation has not seen
since Chvez frst came to power in 1999, according to a
Stratfor report published in December when the presidents
health was rapidly declining.
Chvezs death, Stratfor said, would give a unifed oppo-
sition grouplikely supportive of former presidential can-
didate Henrique Capriles Radonskiits best chance in over
a decade of rising to power. Such a leadership change would
likely signal a seismic shif in Venezuelas foreign policy.
During his long presidency, Chvez distanced the Ven-
ezuelan government from the Vatican, which caused Pope
Benedict xvi to view Chvez as a dangerous man, and to
express deep concern over Latin
Americas slide to the lef.
But that breach would be
rapidly healed if Capriles, a self-
described devout Catholic, comes
to power. Capriles was educated
at the Catholic University in Ca-
racas, and has said if he ascends
to power the frst items on his
agenda would be to pay homage
to the Virgin Mary, repeal Vene-
zuelas weapons deals with Russia,
and contemplate an end to the
nations robust relationship with
Iran. Such policies in Venezuela
would no doubt greatly please the
former pope and his successor,
who will likely be in power before
the end of the month.
Te Trumpet and our forerun-
ner magazine the Plain Truth
have long pointed out Bible
prophecies indicating that Europe and Latin America will
likely draw near each other in the time just before Christs
returncemented together by the Roman Catholic religion
and the Spanish language. Te death of Hugo Chvez could
open the way for these two sides to draw much closer.

n African trade shifting
from U.S. to China
Democrat Sen. Chis Coons of
Delaware warned on Tursday that
America is losing ground to China
on African trade. He then called
for an early renewal of trade ben-
efts for Africa as part of a broader
strategy to counter growing Chinese
investment and infuence. America
is losing ground and ceding eco-
nomic opportunities in Africa to
competitors, the chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations Subcom-
mittee on African Afairs said in a
report issued by his ofce. China,
which has made dramatic inroads
across the continent in recent years,
may undermine or even counter
value-driven U.S. goals in the region,
and should serve as a wake-up call
for enhanced American trade and
investment. Scott Eisner, vice presi-
dent of African afairs at the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce, also under-
scored that point at a press confer-
ence with business groups, saying
that the United States probably has
a small window in the next couple of
years before China, India and Brazil
take over all the ownership on the
continent and trade relations are
theirs to own. Global struggles for
natural resources are prophesied to
intensify in the near future.

House submitted the sequestration
proposal to Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on July 27, 2011.
Afer that, Congress enacted seques-
ter legislation and President Obama
signed the bill into law that summer.
Te bill was supposed to force Re-
publicans and Democrats to fnd com-
mon ground on a new budget deal before the mandatory
sequester cuts would kick in. Of course, these cuts only
represent a slight reduction in planned spending increases.
Either way, with or without the cuts, the federal govern-
ment will spend more money this year than it did last year.
But back to 2011. As part of the sequester deal between
the White House and Congress, Republicans agreed to
raise the debt ceiling high enough to ensure that a budget
battle wouldnt become a political hot-potato during the
2012 election. And in return for the debt-ceiling favor, the
White House promised it would not raise taxes as a substi-
tute for the sequester crisis.
So for the president to now propose
a substitute that includes spend-
ing cuts and higher taxes, he is, as
Woodward charged last week, mov-
ing the goal posts. And in doing so,
he has used numerous speeches and
staged events in recent weeks to try to
frighten Americans into pressuring
Republicans to cave in and raise taxes.
In a speech on February 19, for
example, President Obama said the
sequester cuts would degrade the
ability of emergency responders to
react to disasters. fbi agents would be
furloughed. Tere would be fewer bor-
der patrol agents to prevent illegal im-
migration. Federal prosecutors would
be forced to free criminals. Cutbacks
at airports would lead to extended de-
lays for travelers. Tousands of teach-
ers and educators would be laid of.
Tens of thousands of parents would
lose childcare services. Hundreds of thousands would lose
access to health care. And hundreds of thousands more
would lose their jobs.
Even the threat of sequester, the president gravely
warned, had forced the Navy to not deploy the U.S.S.
Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf!
Tat comment prompted the 69-year-old Woodward to
tell msnbc that he hadnt seen this kind of madness com-
ing out of the White House in a long time. Ten he claimed
to have been threatened over his column. According to
Woodward, a White House ofcial said he would regret
making the goal posts comment.
Te White House responded by pushing back hard against
Woodwardand with helpful assistance from its friends
in the media. Te liberal lef seemed almost giddy about
throwing one of its founding fathers under the bus in order
to provide cover for the lies coming out of the White House.
Yesterday, afer last-minute attempts to avoid sequester
had failed, President Obama said, [L]ets be clear. None
of this is necessary. Its happening because a choice that
Republicans in Congress have made. Teyve allowed these
cuts to happen because they refuse to budge on closing a
single wasteful loophole to help reduce the defcit (empha-
sis added throughout).
Its the same lie that was made during the debate with
Mitt Romney, when the president said the sequester was
a Republican brainchild. It is something Congress has
proposed, he insisted. It will not happen.
And yet, the very next dayhours afer that debate
concludedin an of-the-record interview with the Des
Moines Register, President Obama actually took credit for
the sequester and even anticipated it being in place!
[W]hen you combine the Bush tax cuts expiring, the
sequester in place, the commitment of both myself and my
opponentat least Governor Romney claims that he wants
to reduce the defcitbut were going to be in a position
where I believe in the frst six months we are going to solve
that big piece of business.
Its all going according to the plan the White House out-
lined in 2011. And in the end, no matter how many lies are
exposed along the way, the radical lefist administration in
the White House will end up with what it has wanted all
alonghigher taxes and increased defcit spending.
America is under attackand the attack is coming from
within, as my father explained in his Web Exclusive on
February 25.
