I am very excited about what lies ahead and what we can do for our Lord Jesus Christ. I realize that the separation is going to be hard and there will be many times that there will be discouragement on the field. I feel, however, that we find the answer to those situations in Isaiah 40:28*31. God is everlasting and gives His children strength for every situation. On in Chapter 41 in verses 10 and 13, we find that He will hold us up and not let go. I have nothing to fear with the Lord standing by me each step of the way. I am excited about the vocation I have chosen and about the possibilities of service. The fields are white unto harvest and the gate has been opened. Iam walking through the open gatewith your prayers andsupport. A sincere thank you to each one for your very important part of my life and that of Portugal Christian Mission. THE LORD HAS BLESSED "All over the world thisgospel isproducing fruit and growing, just as it hasbeen doing among yousince the day you heard it and understood God s grace in all its truth." (Col. 1:6) The gospel has produced fruit here in Portugal. Each Tuesday evening the Robison's. Thomas, and I meet with the Braz family. They are immigrants from Mozambique and had to leave their home there. Just a little over a month ago the family was baptized. The baptism took place in the ocean and was a very beautiful sight. The family is very interested in studying about and growing in Christ. I would appreciate your prayers for this family, Senhor Braz, Luciano. Nina. Ana and David. They prayfor their brotliers and sisters in Christ who live in the States, and send their greetings. "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not returnto it without watering the earth and making it budand flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is myword that goes out from my mouth; It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what 1 desire and achieve thepurpose for which Isent it." (Isa. 55; 10.1 I) (texts taken from Neio International Version). Ckeri C^katii I bid you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. I realize that Thanksgiving has past and Christmas has not yet arrived, but I do send season's greetings! I have so much to be thankful for this year. I arrived safely in Lisbon on September 19, 1981 and was met by the Robisons and Debbie Brunsman. I have been adjusting quite well to the different culture since then. During the first two months I shared an apartment with Debbie. She is a co-worker with the Portugal team, but not affiliated with P.C.M. Debbie is excited about the potential for future work in Lisbon. Present ly she is engaged in language study. These months have been a learning ex perience for me as I adjust to the practical side of living here. By the time you receive this issue of the Portugal Professor I will be living in my own apartment. It's not easy to find living quarters that are suitable and much time has been spent in searching for an apartment. I am now in language school and don't have a lot of spare time anymore. It is really different to have to plan my days activities so far in advance. Dixie Thomas is also taking classes with me and the Robisons are taking an advanced class in Portuguese. The University is very adequate for our needs. The Bible Studies are going really well. We have two with the Portuguese immigrants from Mozambique and Angola. One is on Tuesday night with the Braz family and the other ison Sundayeveningwithabout fifteen to twenty in attendance. The Lord has truly blessed. These meetings are conducted totally in Portuguese. I play my guitar to accompany the singing and have really en joyed singing with them. Many of them can not understand how I can sing in Portuguese and not speakit as well. There is also an English Church which is on Sunday morning and Bible Study on Thursday. Couples with NATO and American firms and some British families attend these services. It is really great to have Americans to talk to and share with and I have become close friends with them. Well, that covers just about all my activities since I arrived. I do want to thank you for your prayers and support. I am not quite as homesick now and I'm getting along fine. Till next time! Chen Lynn NEW ADDRESS PORTUGAL TRANSPORTATION The transportation in Portugal is very good. I have to admit that it is hard not having my own car, but I manage quite well. I have ridden just about all the public trans portation that Is available except the ferries. To get from my apartment to the Robison's it is necessary to take a bus like the one in the picture. To get into the town of Lisbon proper, we must take a train that is run by electricity. They are very convenient and adequate. The trains run either every fifteen minutes or every half hour. Upon arriving in Lisbon, we ride double-decker buses and trolleys. It is really interesting to watch the bus drivers manipulate the long buses down the very narrow streets. There are times when I don't even watch! There is also very good and reasonable taxi service. Many people here ride motorcycles and scooters, but they tend to be very dangerous. One does not even have to have a license to ride a scooter. The drivers in Portugal have no respect for the pedestrian and are the worst drivers I have ever seen. Portugal has the highest traffic fatality rate in Europe. To obtain a Portuguese driver's license is a very difficult and costly process. The cost is about $ I 50.00. I have decided to stick to the public transportation. If needed, I can drive on my international license, but think I will leave thedriving to others. PRAY-LUDES 1.
