Students take activity courses for a variety of reasons. If this course is primarily for personal interest, or as part of an AAS, AGS, occupational certificate, or is a PCC professional development activity the Pass/D/Fail option may suit you best. However, if these credits will be used to fulfill an AA, AS, ABUS, AGEC, or transfer degree, a letter grade will be required. Some colleges only give credit for activity courses at a B level or higher, and some accept a C grade for credit. It is the students responsibility to check this out and plan accordingly. The Pass/ D /Fail option will be assumed unless the instructor is informed that a letter grade is required/desired.
Attendance and active participation are critical in an activity course to improve both skills and fitness; therefore, this component counts the most toward successful completion (Pass or C). One point will be awarded for each class meeting with active participation. PLEASE NOTE: There are no excused absences for any reason as the grading scale already assumes a reasonable number of missed classes regardless of reason. A limited option for making up missed classes is described below and will be explained in class by the instructor (see scale below).
LATE/LEAVING EARLY POLICY: Students arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving more than 10 minutes early will be given half credit for that days attendance after the 1 st occurrence. If your schedule with work or other classes is so tight you will be consistently missing the beginning or the end of class, you will need to reschedule your class time. Please discuss this with the instructor ASAP to see what other classes are available to you.

Procedural Expectations for all WC FAW Courses Arrive on time, dressed out and ready to participate. Being punctual is important to insure proper warm-up to prevent injury as well as to avoid disrupting the class. There are lockers available for day use in the FSSC and GYM bldgs. Bring your own lock and towel and take everything home at the end of the day. (The FSS/FAW staff and college cannot be responsible for theft or vandalism. Locks may be cut off to provide access for other students and at the end of the semester to facilitate cleaning.) There is limited space in the classrooms and your instructor will tell you what may/may not be brought to class. Wear loose-fitting comfortable clothes such as shorts and T-shirts or stretchable exercise clothing. Shirts must be worn no bare chests or uncovered sports bras. For safety, wearing of jewelry is discouraged. Appropriate footwear this class will be determined and discussed by your instructor. Non-marking soles are required in the classroom if shoes are required 201320_FAW_132_AllCRNS_Kbx.doc revised: 1/4/13 slh Skill levels within the class are likely to vary greatly, and students will be expected to participate cooperatively and appropriately with each other. Instructors have the expertise to assist students in modifying exercises and movements for the students safety. Please discuss limitations with your instructor as soon as possible. Personally sign-in at the beginning of class. It is your responsibility to do so each time as this is the main mechanism for recording your course points. If you forget to sign-in, you may not get credit for the day. If you sign-in and leave the class early without having discussed this with your instructor, it may be count as a ! credit day (make a note of your instructors policy on arriving late or leaving early). NOTE: This may also be considered academic dishonesty depending on the circumstance. Communication with your instructor prevents misunderstandings! All cell phones, PDAs, headphones, ear buds, and other electronic devices should be left in your locker, car, or turned off during class. If you have an emergency that may necessitate your phone being on, speak to your instructor PRIOR to class. If you are using one of these devices during class, your instructor will give you a verbal reminder. If it happens a 2 nd time, she/he will send you written reminder via your MyPima account. If it happens a 3 rd time, you will not get credit for the day. After that, the instructor will initiate a formal complaint through the Student Code of Conduct. Disruptive behavior (such as but not limited to loud/frequent talking, inappropriate language, or anything that interrupts the effective learning environment) will be handled as above. Blatant disrespect, intimidating or violent behavior, theft, vandalism, or other egregious behavior or criminal violations (such as but not limited to falsifying information, tampering with the official records/computer, academic dishonesty) will be immediately sanctioned with loss of credit for the visit and referral to the VP of Students and/or the Campus Police. Food and gum are not allowed in the classrooms. Water in closed bottles may be brought in to the Indoor Cycling class and outdoor classes, but not in classrooms with wooden floors. There are water fountains available close to those classrooms. It is your responsibility to make every effort possible to contact the instructor as soon as reasonable to inform her/him of any extenuating circumstances, particularly those that entail a change in your health status, schedule, or ability to fully participate in the class.
Make-Ups for Missed Classes For WC courses with additional sections of this course or closely related and listed courses, you may attend one of the other sections listed on the front of the syllabus and bring a signed make-up slip to your instructor. Please arrive a little early and ask the instructor if there is space for you to participate for the make-up. If you are unable to go to another section, or if none are offered at WC, you may complete one of the related activities described under the A grade section (below) to make-up a missed class. Work completed for a make-up will count separately from the work required for the A grades. Students may make up a maximum of 2 class periods in the WC Fitness & Conditioning Center (FCC, Rm 101). Pima ID and adhering to the rules of that room will be required. Students will be responsible for identifying which section is being made up at the time of check-in and time used may not count for multiple courses. Each course allows students to miss some classes (see chart above) without grade penalty. These could be for athletic or student government events, jury duty, personal or family illness, death in the family, transportation issues, or lack of motivation. However, at the end of the semester, if you have too many absences that have not been made up, your grade may be jeopardized. We recommend you start making up classes after 1 or 2 so you do not fall too far behind at the end of the semester.
Grading Policies All FAW courses at WC have similar grading requirements and expectations for participation. Minimal attendance requirements must be met to earn a passing or C letter grade. NO Incomplete grades are given for any reason. This is an activity course, and if your health status changes such that you can no longer safely participate, you will need to withdraw from the course no later than Apr 4 th for 16-wk courses or Apr 25 th for 2 nd 8-wk courses. If your work or family schedule changes and you are not able to get in often enough to meet the course requirements, you will need to withdraw from the course no later than Apr 4 th for 16-wk courses or Apr 25 th for 2 nd 8-wk courses. If the injury/illness or other extenuating circumstance happened after the deadline for withdrawal, you will need to notify your instructor and provide appropriate documentation for an Instructor Withdrawal. NOTE: Simply contacting an Instructor after the deadline has passed will not be sufficient for the Instructor Withdrawal grade. If you could have withdrawn yourself, the instructor may not grant the withdrawal depending on the circumstances. Communicate early!
Throughout the semester, various activities will be presented to allow students to self-assess their fitness and/or course skills related to this course. Personal goal setting will be discussed and students will have an opportunity to set SMART goals for themselves. These goals are Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Time-bound. At the end of the course, you will participate in a self-evaluation of your progress on these goals. Instructors will also be using various 201320_FAW_132_AllCRNS_Kbx.doc revised: 1/4/13 slh assessments or activities as part of the Colleges Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Initiatives. This may/may not include a formal reassessment of a fitness or skill test. Students who complete the SMART goal setting and self- evaluation will be eligible for a B or passing grade if the minimal attendance requirements are also met.
To earn an A grade in this course, students must meet the minimal attendance requirements, and the SMART goals including the self-evaluation, and the following additional work. Complete 2 video reviews about some aspect of kickboxing (techniques, tournaments, etc). This will include a written reflection, minimum 1 full-page, double-spaced 12 pt font, about it and how this video furthered your understanding of kickboxing and/or will help you to improve your kickboxing skills, OR Complete 2 typed papers, minimum 1 full-page, double-spaced 12 pt font, on a subject specific to kickboxing. The papers may be written in response to an article suggested by the instructor or researched by the student (must include a copy of the article). The reflection should discuss how this article furthered your understanding of kickboxing and/or will help you to improve your kickboxing skills, OR A combination of 2 video reviews and articles. OR Pass (75%) a written exam on kickboxing terminology, techniques, etc. from class handouts and discussions.
Grading Examples for this course: 1. Student attends minimum number of times, completes goal-setting self-evaluation, and receives B or Pass grade at students option. 2. Student attends more than the minimum number of times, completes goal-setting self-evaluation, and receives B or Pass grade at students option. 3. Student attends 1 less than the minimum number of times, completes 1 make-up class = minimum attendance points, does not complete self-evaluation, receives C or Pass grade at students option. 4. Student attends more than the minimum number of times, completes goal-setting self-evaluation, completes 2 articles and 0 presentations, receives A or Pass grade at students option. 5. Student attends 1 less than the minimum number of times, completes 1 article for make-up = minimum attendance points, completes goal-setting self-evaluation, completes 1 presentation and 1 additional article, receives A or Pass grade at students option.
