Shilajit - This mineral salt from India is sometimes called the "Destroyer of Diabetes" and it contains lots

of minerals, peptides, fulvic acid, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, and other lipids. Studies show while taking
Shilajit blood glucose drops significantly and LDL cholesterol or bad cholesterol goes down, plus
triglycerides, and HDL or good cholesterol increases.

Bitter Melon - This Asian food contains a plant like insulin substance that not only lowers blood glucose
but also lowers glucose in all the tissues of the body. Also Bitter Melon promotes proper carbohydrate
digestion allowing far less glucose to be released into the body. And Bitter Melon can reverse insulin
resistant, and prevent complications that occur with uncontrolled diabetes.

The gourd-like fruit has a long history in Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine both a healthy food and
medicine and its use as a treatment for diabetes is supported by scientific studies here in the west.
Bitter melon improves the body's ability to use blood sugar and improves glucose tolerances. James
Duke writes "One of the phytochemicals, charantin is said to be more potent than tolbutamide, and has
fewer side effects. and recommends eating one small melon a day 1 Several clinical trials have shown
that bitter melon extract and juice lower blood sugar in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. There is
good scientific evidence (Level B2) that bitter melon is effective at reducing blood glucose levels in
diabetics.

Cinnamon - There are so many studies showing that Cinnamon can lower blood glucose by almost 30%
and at the same time lower LDL cholesterol by almost 28%, and lower triglycerides by up to 30%. Other
studies show a 20 times increase in glucose metabolism thus lower blood sugar and Cinnamon contains
lots of powerful polyphenols like green tea that prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes, and cancer.

Malabar Gourd - Studies show that extracts from Malabar Gourd Seeds rejuvenate insulin producing
cells of the pancreas, thus helping those suffering from type 2 diabetes and according to a study done in
Mexico it also seems to work well for prediabetics. Blood glucose levels change fast with Malabar Gourd,
usually a week and within 3 months blood glucose is back to normal. Malabar Gourd contains
polysaccharide sugars that restore pancreatic tissue including insulin-producing cells, and increases
circulation in the pancreas. And another study shows that fresh Malabar Gourd juice also works well for
lowering blood glucose.

Nopal - This wonderful cactus has the ability to lower blood glucose by over 45% and may lower insulin
production at the same time. Also lowering cholesterol and soothing the GI tract, plus helping with
constipation.

Fenugreek - Studies show that Fenugreek contains a powerful amino acid (4-hydroxyisoleucine) that
helps the insulin producing cells of the pancreas to produce more insulin thus lowering blood sugar. At
the same time studies show that Fenugreek lowers cholesterol and helps protect the liver from the
damage from alcohol and detoxes the liver too.
If you wish to use fenugreek to lower blood sugars, it is better to use the powder rather than the whole
seed. The powder releases more vanadium as it is digested.

Neem - Studies show that taking neem leaf extracts can lower the need for insulin injections by up to
50% and it also lowers blood glucose in general. Plus Neem also increases circulation throughout the
body thus helping to reduce complications associated with diabetes.

Garlic and Onions - Though mild in action Garlic and Onions do lower blood glucose, cholesterol, and
triglycerides too. These foods contain alliin which is a sulfide compound that lowers blood glucose and
helps insulin to be used for effectively.

Burdock - may play a useful role in helping to control blood sugar levels due to the inulin content of the
root. In Europe, the fresh root is used for lowering blood sugar, its inulin content making it particularly
suitable for diabetes.

Konjac Root - This fiber filled plant contains lots of soluble fiber that lowers cholesterol and at the same
time stabilizes blood glucose and lower blood pressure. It slows down the absorption of glucose into the
system thus helping to prevent glucose spikes. And it makes great noodles, breads, and lots of other
great tasting healthy dishes. At the same time Konjac Root can help you lose weight and thus lower your
chances of coming down with diabetes in the first place.

Bilberry (dried, ripe fruit & leaves) - Studies show that bilberry which looks like a blueberry lowers blood
glucose and at the same time make the body more sensitive to insulin so that glucose is better utilized.
Plus Bilberry is a powerful antioxidant that helps with macular degeneration, cancer, heart disease,
strokes, and slows the aging process.

Gymenema Sylvestre - This powerful herb promotes glucose utilization in the cells thus lowering blood
glucose and prevents the liver from creating more glucose also lowering cholesterol and trigs. Some
people feel Gymenema Sylvestre is one of the most powerful herbal formulas for treating high blood
glucose for both type 1 and 2 diabetics. And Gymenema Sylvestre may help rejuvenate beta cells in the
pancreas thus helping to heal the condition.

Salacia oblonga - A herbal used in traditional Indian medicine to treat diabetes seems to lower blood
sugar and insulin levels in the same way as prescription drugs. Researchers gave extracts of the herb
Salacia oblonga to 39 healthy adults, and the results were promising. The largest dose of the herb
extract - 1,000 milligrams - decreased insulin and blood glucose levels by 29 and 23 percent,
respectively.

Holy Basil Leaf - called Tulsi in India, is also widely used for a broad range of health conditions, including
blood sugar imbalances, and is an essential herb in Ayurveda. Holy basil tea, dried leaves and extracts
are widely available and used to aid meditation, correct internal imbalances, and strengthen overall
health and well-being. Reduces both fasting and post-meal glucose levels. Holy Basil is high in
antioxidants. Having high blood sugar is an inflammatory condition. Antioxidants are powerful anti-
inflammatory nutrients.

Ginseng - Typical dosage: 1 to 3 grams a day in capsule or tablet form, or 3 to 5 milliliters of tincture
three times a day.
Known for its immune-boosting and disease-fighting benefits, this Chinese herb has several positive
diabetes studies behind it. Researchers have found that ginseng slows carbohydrate absorption;
increases cells' ability to use glucose; and increases insulin secretion from the pancreas. A team from the
University of Toronto has repeatedly demonstrated that ginseng capsules lower blood glucose 15 to 20
percent compared to placebo pills.

This amazing herb lowers blood glucose by limiting the tri-carboxylic acid cycle thus increasing insulin
output, plus keeping insulin producing cells alive and thriving. At the same time Ginseng promotes a
healing effect to the lining of all arteries in the body thus helping to prevent heart attacks.

Cloves - This herb contains 30 percent levels of the antioxidant phenol in dry weight. It also contains the
antioxidants anthocyanins and quercetin. This herb has antiseptic as well as germicidal properties. It also
offers anti-inflammatory, analgesic and digestive health benefits. Clove oil can be used to for something
as uncomplicated as toothaches, headaches, cough and even indigestion.

a recent study, oregano was found to treat giardia - an infection of the intestines brought about by
microscopic parasites - effectively. Herbalists even recommend it as a treatment for E-coli.

Sage - This herb contains phytosterols reputed to have a cooling action. Herbal medicine practitioners
use it to treat uterine bleeding and cramps. A German study on this herb shows that diabetics who
drank infusions of sage on an empty stomach reduced their blood sugar levels. It is popularly used to
flavor meat and soup dishes and can even be drunk as tea.

Turmeric - Its efficacy increases when effective with an equal amount of amla powder.

Curry Patta - Eating 10 fresh fully-grown curry leaves every morning for 3 months is said to prevent
diabetes.

Jambu fruit (jamun) - Its seed contains jamboline, which controls the excessive conversion of starch to
sugar. Seed powder can be used with water or buttermilk. It reduces the quantity of sugar in urine and
allays the unquenchable thirst.

Jambolan seed - also thought to lower blood sugar, and have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
properties. One study showed Jambolan may even protect the pancreas by restoring protective enzymes
such as glutathione back to normal levels.

Jambul - The fruit and seeds of the Jambul tree have long been used in Eastern traditional medicine, and
are gaining more interest here in the West for the treatment of diabetes. Practitioners of Ayurveda in
India value jambul for lowering blood sugar.
Add jambul seeds to cooking daily. Ayurvedic medicine teaches that jambul is synergistic with okra;
when okra and jambul are eaten together, jambul's blood-sugar-lowering action is intensified. Also
available in liquid extracts and capsules.

Bael leaves - They are scientifically proved to be anti-diabetic. Drink fresh juice of leaves with pinch of
pepper.

Goat's Rue - The traditional use of Goats rue to treat diabetes has been a staple since the middle ages.
Goats rue contains an alkaloid, galegine, that was found in clinical trials to decrease blood sugar and
insulin resistance. This lead to the development of metformin, which is currently used in the treatment
of diabetes. Studes in mice also point to a weight-reducing action for galega, that appears to involve a
loss of body fat.

Marshmallow - Mallow helps to control blood sugar via its large concentration of both soluble fiber
(pectin), and the mucilage it contains. Soluble fiber in food and herbs helps to slow down the release of
sugar into the blood stream, helping to control blood sugar spikes after eating.

Aloe Vera - A well known liver tonic, its regular use tones up the hepatic-biliary system and regulates
sugar & fat. Preliminary research suggests that intake of aloe vera juice can help improve blood glucose
levels and may therefore be useful in treating people with diabetes.

Aloe also have following positive effects due to the presence of compounds such as lectins, mannans
and anthraquinones.

Decreased blood lipids (fats) in patients that have abnormally high levels of these molecules in their
blood

Decreased swelling and faster healing of wound injuries: Leg wounds and ulcers are common
complications of diabetes, and they typically take longer time to heal than in healthy non-diabetic
individuals.

Cabbage - It is as effective as insulin.

Indian goose berry (Amala) - One tsp of its juice mixed with a cup of fresh bitter gourd juice, taken daily
for 2 months, stimulates islets of langerhans (a part of Pancreas) and enable persons to secrete natural
insulin.

Isabgole - It helps in controlling blood sugar in diabetics by inhibiting the excessive absorption of sugars
from the intestines.

Beans - Beans are high in carbohydrate and fiber and stimulates the production of insulin. It should be
eaten liberally to keep diabetes under control.
Many studies have shown that Phaseolus vulgaris, the common white bean is an inhibitor of alpha-
amylase, an enzyme that promotes the breakdown of starch in the human gastrointestinal tract.
Ingestion of this inhibitor helps prevent the breakdown of the carbohydrate in the intestine in foods so
the less sugars are absorbed as fat cells for future use.

Cucumber and Radish leaves - These low a carbohydrate vegetables are beneficial in the prevention and
control of diabetes.

Ginger - It is rich in gingerols, that can increase uptake of glucose into muscle cells without using insulin,
and may therefore assist in the management of high blood sugar levels. Two ginger extracts spissum and
an oily extract interact with serotonin receptors to reveres their effect on insulin secretion. Treatment
led to a 35% drop in blood glucose levels and a 10 per cent increase in plasma insulin levels.

Sumac - Rhus coriaria (Sicilian Sumac), Rhus aromatica (North-American Sumac)
Frequently used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries, sumac is high in tannins and adds a
lemony flavor to meat, legume, and vegetable dishes.
Sumac is a wonderful alternative to lemon if citrus allergies are an issue.
Sumac is rather astringent and may be used to counter severe diarrhea and infections.
Most importantly for diabetics and individuals at risk of diabetes, sumac is particularly high in the trace
mineral germanium.
Uses of Sumac: Sprinkle finely ground sumac onto salad dressings, meats, kebabs, chicken, lamb, fish,
legumes (chickpeas and lentils).
Middle Eastern use includes sumac as part of the famous spice mix, Za'atar (consisting of oregano,
sumac, and sesame seed), and to flavor and garnish the chickpea dish Hummus.
Steep a half-teaspoon of whole sumac in hot water for a refreshing and tangy cup of summer tea.
Caution: Many of this family's plants are highly toxic. Do NOT use ornamental sumac!

Szechuan Pepper - Pericarpium zanthoxyli, Zanthoxylum piperitum
Also spelled Sichuan pepper or called "Chinese prickly ash".
Where black pepper may irritate the stomach wall of many individuals, the slightly tangy, mild, and
lemony Szechuan pepper is preferable.
In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to stimulate food "transport and transformation" by acting on
the function of the spleen (pancreas).
Szechuan pepper has anti-inflammatory properties. It is said to stimulate blood circulation, reduce bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels, and lower high blood pressure.
Szechuan pepper hulls are highly alkaline, slightly numbing to mouth and tongue, and frequently are
being combined with chili peppers or cayenne pepper for additional heat.
Uses of Szechuan Pepper: Grind and sprinkle over foods, instead of black pepper. If you like, toast the
pods before grinding.
Concoct a few whole Szechuan pods in your herbal or chai tea for a fresh and tangy aroma.
Caution: Use caution if you have issues with nightshade plants.
Large scale cultivation may expose the fruit and pods to pesticides. Buy organic only!

Vitamin D - improves the body's ability to use insulin and helps the function of pancreatic cells that
produce insulin. Make sure you have the basics covered, says Hyman. In addition to 2,000 to 4,000 mg
of vitamin D, he also recommends a good quality multivitamin and 1,000 mg of fish oil twice a day.

Magnesium - Typical dosage: 250 to 350 milligrams once a day.
Magnesium deficiency is not uncommon in people with diabetes, and it can worsen high blood sugar
and insulin resistance. Some studies suggest that supplementing with magnesium may improve insulin
function and lower blood sugar levels, but other studies have shown no benefit. Have your doctor check
you for deficiency before supplementing with magnesium.

Prickly Pear Cactus - Typical dosage: If you eat it as a food, aim for 1/2 cup of cooked cactus fruit a day.
Otherwise, follow label directions.
The ripe fruit of this cactus has been shown in some small studies to lower blood sugar levels. You may
be able to find the fruit in your grocery store, but if not, look for it as a juice or powder at health food
stores. Researchers speculate that the fruit may possibly lower blood sugar because it contains
components that work similarly to insulin. The fruit is also high in fiber.

Maitake - lowers blood glucose and improves cholesterol levels.

Kudzu root - supports pancreatic cells and stimulates insulin production.

Anemarrhena rhizome - decreases insulin resistance in those with high blood sugar. Yet it leaves people
with "normal" blood sugar levels untouched.

infections; it has an Anti-Viral and Anti-Bacterial activit. Should not be used by Pregnant and Nursing
Woman.

Olive Leaves Have been proven to greatly facilitate the reduction of blood sugar levels and blood
pressure, as well as protecting the heart's function. In a research conducted in Messina University in
Italy, about the effect of olive leaf extract on heart health, it was demonstrated that Oleuropein
increases blood flow to the heart, by expanding its blood vessels and reducing blood pressure.

Inula Helenium Helps to reduce blood sugar levels, antiseptic, anti-bacterial. The Inula Plant also
decreases blood pressure and stimulates the immune system.

Eucalyptus contains an Antiseptic active ingredient Eucalyptol. Known by his healing characteristic.
Helps to reduce blood sugar levels.
Should not be used by Pregnant and Nursing Woman.

Nigella Sativa (black cumin) - Type 2 Diabetes: Two grams of black seed a day resulted in reduced fasting
glucose, decreased insulin resistance, increased beta-cell function, and reduced glycosylated
hemoglobin (HbA1c) in human subjects. (In oil - Egyptian Black Seed Oil is milder than others.)
