Introduction

In the technological world we live in today, its hard for one to imagine functioning
without technology. Technology has always played a major role in creating the wealth of nations
and influencing standards of living and quality of life. It took humans about 2 million years to
develop from nomads foraging for food in east central Africa to agricultural settlers capable of
expanding their power with tools and domestic animals. When primitive human beings used a
tree branch to reach for fruit on trees or shaped a rock to form a spear, they were developing
technology necessary for survival. It took years of trial and error, creativity and persistence to
develop tools, acquire the knowledge to build cities and monuments, obtain know-how to farm
the land, develop methods to move materials and products, and implement procedures to run
governments.
The next several thousand years witnessed the development of the wheel, the chariot, the
water wheel, and mechanical implements. It was only less than two centuries ago that the steam
engine and the factory system ushered in the start of the Industrial Revolution. Energy generated
from water and from mechanical, electrical, and nuclear sources enabled humans to achieve
unprecedented change in their way of life. Yet it no other time in history has technology been as
pervasive in human lives as it is today. In short, it took technology to achieve progress.
Technology has had such a profound effect on human lives that progress of civilization is
frequently identified by the dominant technology of the age. Government operations, global
corporations, private enterprises, and individuals are highly dependent on technology for their
success. The rate of technological progress and societys dependence on technology only
promises to intensify as the world moves into the twenty-first century.
In spite of the fact that technology is the most pervasive force influencing human lives
today, it remains mysterious to many people, and its exact definition eludes most of the public
and many professionals.
It is therefore important to start with a clear definition of technology. The use of the term
"technology" has changed significantly over the last 200 years. Before the 20th century, the term
was uncommon in English, and usually referred to the description or study of the useful arts. The
term was often connected to technical education, as in the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. The term "technology" rose to prominence in the 20th century in connection with
the Second Industrial Revolution. The term's meanings changed in the early 20th century when
American social scientists, beginning with Thorstein Veblen, translated ideas from the German
concept of Technik into "technology". In German and other European languages, a distinction
exists between technik and technologie that is absent in English, which usually translates both
terms as "technology". By the 1930s, "technology" referred not only to the study of the industrial
arts but to the industrial arts themselves.
Technology can be defined as all the knowledge, products, processes, tools, methods, and
systems employed in the creation of goods or in providing services. In simple terms, technology
is the way we do things. It is the means by which we accomplish objectives. Technology is the
practical implementation of knowledge, a mean of aiding human endeavor. It is common to
think of technology in terms of hardware, such as machines, computers, or highly advanced
electronic gadgets. However, technology embraces a lot more than just machines. There are
several technological entities besides hardware, including software and human skills.
Meanwhile, engineering is the discipline that seeks to study and design new technologies.
Technology can also be viewed as an activity that forms or changes
culture. Additionally, technology is the application of math, science, and the arts for the benefit
of life as it is known. A modern example is the rise of communication technology, which has
lessened barriers to human interaction and, as a result, has helped spawn new subcultures; the
rise of cyber culture has, at its basis, the development of the Internet and the computer. Not all
technology enhances culture in a creative way; technology can also help facilitate political
oppression and war via tools such as guns. As a cultural activity, technology predates
both science and engineering, each of which formalizes some aspects of technological endeavor.

Body
Technology now is depicted as something that helps new ideas come about and it just
makes life a lot simpler. It can increase our knowledge in something that we want to know
easily. But with all the outbreak of so much technology nowadays and so many children having
access to it, can't we say that it creates a new laziness found in people, before when you had to
find things out for yourself, it helped develop the passion you have for whatever you needed, but
now children just sit at home all day playing games or copying and pasting their homework not
really stepping into the world, or if they do, they are doing it from someone else's viewpoint on
the internet. As I said playing games, before people had to go out, play games and even create
them with mates, but not people sit at home in front of a console or lying in bed and playing
games until midnight and even in school, there are now mobile phones which can do almost what
a computer can, so instead of having fun or having a nice discussion at breaks, you find people
on their phones on the internet and playing games. It can also distract the studies of the students.
Instead of wasting their time in memorizing, analyzing and learn more about the subjects, they
tend to focus on the gadgets that they have and just play games, browse different social media
sites.
These are some uses of technology today. In the use of technology in business, it can save
more money if there is technology use rather than hiring many persons to perform a certain task.
In communication, unlike in the past, the only communications that we use is writing letters and
mail it in the post office and wait for the mailman to deliver it. But today, by the use of
technology, communication become easier, you can send mails right away. Use of technology in
human relationships, many people are so busy in their work that they dont have time to spend
with their love ones and to have time to find a relationship. Now, with technology, you can
connect and meet new people while you are at work. You can also find a date without leaving
your work. With the use of mobile phones or any gadgets, we can connect with the old and new
relationships. Use of technology in education, technology has made a very big change in the
education world. With the invention of technological gadgets and mobile apps which helps
students learn easily. Now days you can access a full library via a mobile app on any smart
phone or ipad. Before inventing this technology, students had to go to physical libraries to get the
information they need. Use of technology in purchasing, Technology has also made the buying
and selling of good so flexible. In purchasing, we already have online shopping in our social
media and users can easily purchase anything online without living the comfort of their homes.
Though we still go out to shop, people still prefer to shop online due to the convenience it gives/
less hassle. Technology in agriculture, technology has changed the agricultural industry by
replacing human labor with machines that are operated or controlled by people or other
machines. Just like in plowing the crops in the farm, before, carabao was used but now we use
machines. Use of technology in transportation: I think of transportation in the same light as food,
clothing and shelter. It has become a basic need, because we use advanced transport means like
cars, trains, airplanes to go to work, to transport goods, to go shopping, to visit friends and
families and so much more. Unlike before, we are just walking to go to the places that we are.

Technology has already become integral today that it is difficult to think of a time
without using them. Millions of people are so attached with technology that it became part of
their daily routines like in waking up, the first thing you look for are your cellular phones. With
the increasing popularity of technology all over the world causes an increase in diversity of its
applications.
It is true that technology has big impact in our lives whether its good or bad, too much
use of technology brings harm to our lives. Below are stated pros and cons of technology.
Technology improves the efficiency in business in a way that it helps gain competitive advantage
in the market while on its con small business cannot afford technology which means they cannot
afford to compete with big business, it might lead to the downfall of the business and will result
into the loss of jobs. Computers and internet made it easier to access information on which gives
less time, energy and effort for the person doing the research. However, not all published
information on the internet is correct and some becomes lazy and dependent on doing their
research. They do not think anymore. In our society today communication is more improved it
became simple, easier and cheap. Distance doesnt matter anymore because there are free call
and text already. But on the other side there is a lack of face to face communication already and
wed rather be facing our cellular phones than socialize and go out with friends. Modern
transportation technology makes it easier to travel long distances and with the rising technologies
it is already easy to book flights however sometimes something goes wrong with booking online
like it is not clearly stated. Another great way how modern technology simplified our lives is
through improving our housing and lifestyle. New architectural designs improved the houses that
we live now compared to the houses before. People are more secured because they can put cctv
cameras and houses are automated. But only people with money can afford that kind of housing
and criminals tend to break in the house because the new architectural design attracts them more.
Technology gave a big impact in the entertainment industry, invention of video games and
advancement in music and visual systems like televisions. The most benefited field of the rise of
technology is the medical field. Doctors make less mistakes because with the new machines
today diseases can easily be determined and cured. But at the same time, human workers retain
less value with the advancement of technology. Machines do work for the person, which is why
companies do not need to employ as many workers to complete the needed task.
Now that we live in a world where everything is more convenient and accessible due to
the advancement of technology, its impact in our lives is immeasurable. The way we use
technology comes in different ways, and there are ways that somehow harms our lives and the
society we live in. Truly, technology has already taken our generation. Every day, it is becoming
more difficult to find an activity that doesnt involve the use of technology. It is in our hands to
use technology in a responsible way to improve our lives.
According to Jordyn Cornier, Steve Jobs reportedly didnt let his kids use the iPad. Let
me repeat that. Steve Jobs, the creator of the iPad, did not let his children use it. In fact, his
children had very limited use of technology at home. Why? Because he knew the potential of
these devices to pose a threat to the development of innovation, creativity, and independence in
our children. If anyone knew what these devices were capable of, good and bad, it was the
brilliant Mr. Jobs.
With our overwhelming addictions to social media and instant information, it isnt
farfetched to suggest that many adults would benefit from supervision on these devices. That
being said, allowing our impressionable kids to use them may be robbing them of the precious
life experiences that only childhood can offer. Instead of using their imaginations and playing
explorer in the back yard, modern generations spend a disconcerting amount of time indoors
playing games, texting, and watching videos on their iDevices. By allowing our kids access to
this immense, infinite technology, we are essentially encouraging our children to rip themselves
out of reality and become apathetic to one-on-one social interaction. To witness a 10 year-old
sitting in a corner on her iPhone while the sun beams down on some of her technology-free
classmates playing in the grass outside is a sad sight
Perhaps the most important thing we are losing with these devices is boredom. We need
time to be bored and curious both as children and adults. In its essence, thats what learning
is; it is a journey of curiosity not to be quelled by instant gratification. Being constantly
stimulated by these magic little devices stifles the creativity, emotions, and passion that being
human entails, especially in children. Do we really want to raise a generation of detached
androids who never go out to stare at the twinkling starlight or who cannot identify the subtle
shifts in the scent and crispness of early autumn air?
These advances in technology are terrific innovations and have undeniably propelled
mankind ever forward. But, just as too much of a good thing can backfire like the
stomachache you get after your fourth indulgent slice of homemade apple pie too much
technology is significantly harmful. If Steve Jobs didnt condone technology use by his own
children, perhaps we should stop and think about whats happening to our new, plugged-in
generations.
