Theme: As one church and one body in Christ, we come together and fellowship with one another.
Scripture Reference: All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals including the Lords Supper, and to prayer. Acts 2:42 (NLT) CHURCH COVENANT
Pastor: By what common and gracious experiences do we enter into spiritual covenant with God and with one another?
Congregation: Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior; and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.
Pastor: What is the great bond of our union with God and each other?
Congregation: We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love.
Pastor: What are our great privileges and duties in this, our own Church?
Congregation: To strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge and holiness; to give it a place in our affections, prayers, and services above every organization of human origin; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine.
Pastor: What vow do we gladly make as stewards of that which God has entrusted to us?
Congregation: To contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, towards its expenses, for the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world.
Pastor: For the sake of our homes and loved ones, what gracious tasks do we humbly assume?
Congregation: We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the word of God; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance.
Pastor: For the sake of the unsaved for whom our Saviour died, to what manner of life and conversation are we solemnly pledged?
Congregation: To walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ, and faithful in the service we promise others; endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will towards all men to exemplify and commend our holy faith. In case of difference of opinion in the church, we unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern.
Pastor: Since one is our Master, even Christ, and all we are brethren, by what fraternal ministries are we to strengthen each other and adorn the teachings of our Lord and Saviour?
Congregation: We further engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort and stir up each other unto every good word and work; to guard each others reputation, not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each others joys, and with tender sympathy bear one anothers burdens and sorrows; to cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules of the savior in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; and through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek to live to the glory of God, who hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Pastor and Congregation: Humbly confessing our past sins, we pray for grace and strength to keep these, our holy vows, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. -- Amen
HISTORY
In the Beginning... (1908 -1911) In the year of our Lord 1908, the home of Bonder and Amanda Johnson gave birth to the formulation of Macedonia Baptist Church of Arlington, Virginia. As their "Walk of Faith" increased, the fellowship was formally established as Macedonia Baptist Church in 1911 by Reverend Brass Clark of Alexandria, Virginia and Reverend Frank Graham of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Reverend John Gilliam served as the first pastor.
Early Growth... (1912 -1925) Pastoral Succession: Reverend Williams, Reverend Peter Mitchell, Reverend Bernard Botts, Reverend Pickney, Reverend Richardson, Reverend Carter Taylor and Reverend Oliver Hawkins. Due to the need to expand, the Old Peyton Hall at Nauck Station was purchased under the pastorate of Reverend Botts. During the transitional years, God blessed Macedonia spiritually as well as increased the membership.
Progress Begins... (1923 -1968) Reverend Sherman Phillips served faithfully for 43 years. Under his pastorate the growth in membership resulted in the construction of a new edifice at the corner of 22nd Street and the "Track" (Kenmore Street). The cornerstone was laid on September 18, 1927, by the Odd Fellows Organization. Several organizations and auxiliaries were established by Reverend Phillips, which added the Outreach Ministries of the church. Eight Associate Ministers were added to the fellowship under Reverend Phillips' administration. After 43 years of faithful ministerial service, Reverend Phillips was called to eternal rest.
Pressing Onward... (1968-1995) Reverend Clarence A. Robinson succeeded Reverend Sherman Phillips and was officially called to the pastorate at Macedonia Baptist Church on February 26, 1969 and installed on May 4, 1969. Under Reverend Robinson's leadership, the organizational structure of the church expanded to meet the needs of the church and community. A building expansion program was initiated and the Groundbreaking Service was held on October 10, 1971, and on March 11, 1972, the cornerstone was laid by the Grand Lodge of Virginia and Arlington Lodge#58. To broaden the spiritual wisdom and exposure of the membership, Reverend Robinson brought nationally recognized theologians and political figures to the pulpit; inclusive of Reverend Jesse Jackson, Dr. Benjamin Mays, Honorable Chuck Robb and Former Governor L. Douglas Wilder. The church mortgage was burned during a "Mortgage Burning and Rededication Service" held April 30, 1989. A few of the highlights from Reverend Robinsons tenure include, playing a key role in insuring the safety of pedestrians in the Nauck Community through the installation of the stoplight on South Kenmore and 22 nd Streets; also under his leadership, Macedonia was the first black host of the Mount Vernon Baptist Association. In addition, he established and revitalized many programs, organizations and auxiliaries. On February 26, 1995, a Final Pastoral Worship Service was held and Reverend Robinson officially retired after 26 years of dedicated ministerial service to Macedonia Baptist Church and the Nauck Community.
Looking to the Future... (1996 - Present) On July 18, 1996, the membership of Macedonia Baptist Church, in obedience to the Holy Spirit, rendered a ninety seven percent "affirmative vote" of those "present and voting" in the election of Dr. Leonard L. Hamlin, Sr., as Pastor-Elect of Macedonia Baptist Church. On November 24, 1996, Dr. Hamlin was installed and given full pastoral authority of the Macedonia Baptist Church. Dr. Hamlin's leadership, in the words of the Apostle Paul, ring true to God's promise, "Eye has not seen nor has ear heard, nor has it appeared to man, what God has in store for those who love Him." (1 Corinthians 2:9) Under the profound pastoral leadership of Dr. Hamlin, Macedonia Baptist Church has been praising God for numerous blessings and witnessed the following: Continuous growth in church membership, approximately 1,300 members;
