The Header- The header or skyline is the text that goes along the
top of the front cover, following the codes and conventions of
magazines. The header also mentions other artists that will appear
in the magazine , to attract the fans of those artists, a niche market
cover mount- Puff found in yellow and purple boxes, not a part
of the colour scheme meant to attract audiences, the use of the
words 'exclusive' and special implies that it is specific to the Q
magazine and will only occur in the single issue.
The Masthead- The Masthead is presented at the top of the
magazine, following the codes and conventions of magazines. It is
bold and large making it noticeable , the colour scheme of Red,
and White coincide with the House style of the magazine. The
main cover image is covering the masthead which suggests that
the magazine is a well known brand. The masthead can be found
on the left hand side, this makes it easier for it to be found when
stacked on a shelf, this makes it easier for potential buyers to find
whilst browsing. The Masthead is in serif font which contrasts the
sans serif font used in the cover lines, making it appear more
important and sophisticated.
Barcode/Issue/Price/Date-
Usually found around the
bottom of the magazine so
that it can be found, an
important convention that
gives legal information on
the magazine to a reader
and is needed to sell a
magazine. Is usually small
so not to use up too much
space on the front cover.
Main Cover Image- a Image
of the band Foo Fighters.
In the photo the lead singer,
David Grohl is pictured at
the front in a mid shot
whilst the rest of the band
are in the background at a
wide shot, this could be to
emphasise his importance
in the magazine, all
members directly
addressing the audience the
majority have a straight,
stern face , presenting a
serious image to the
readers and enforcing the
idea that the magazine is
mature and about serious
topics .
The Overall impression of
the magazine use
quotations to make the it
appear authentic and
informative, the use of
language and punctuation
(e.g. '!') , figures are used
such as the number 31, or
20 page special to make
the magazine appear
factual and the use of
words such as essential
make it appear as though
audiences need to buy this
magazine.
The Main Cover Line-
Makes a direct reference to
the main image, 'Foo
Fighters', anchoring the
image. The text is c larger
than the other cover lines
and is bold and placing it in
a grey box, differentiating
it from the other cover
lines, the colours black and
grey maintains the
magazines house style.
The caption beneath and
the quotation used
provides an insight on what
type of will be inside and
will particularly appeal to
the niche market of Foo
Fighter fans
Rule Of Thirds- The rule of third has been used on this front
cover, the sue of the rule of thirds highlights certain hot
spots on the cover to mark them as important , for example
the main cover line and David Grohls face or other cover
lines , this will allow the target audience to pick out
important features of the magazine quickly.
The Cover lines- Smaller than
the main sell line, follows the
codes and conventions of
magazine by going around the
main cover image, follows the
house style and follows the
colour scheme of red, white and
black. The cover lines also use the
names of bands that might
attract the target audience as Q
focus on subgenres such as rock
and alternative music. The cover
lines also use numbers to appear
factual to the readers and
accurate as though using
evidence.
