SOUVENIR PROGRAMME
20 JULY 1945 FIRST CANADIAN ARtvJY
PERSONAL MESSAGE
From the
.ARMY COMMANDER
(To be read out to all Troops)
Instructions have been received, and word has gone forth, that
"Headquarters First Canadian Army" ceases to be on 31 July, when
"Headquarters Canadian Forces in the Netherlands" replaces it, and that
I am then to hand over-command of these forces to Lieutenant General
G. G. Simonds, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., and return to Canada. The time has
come, therefore, for me to say "goodbye" to all ranks of the Canadian
. Army, yet in this country. -
In spite of the thrill which comes to me, as it would to any Canadian
soldier, at the thought of returning to Canada after these years overseas,
none the less, it hurts to make this final break away from al! of you, whom
I have commanded, and with whom I have served. It has made a grand
record, this First Canadian Army-and in its ranks has been a great spirit
of comradeship. It is not easy, at the end, to make the break .
I have issued a number of messages to you during the campaign. This
will be the last one. In addition to saying "goodbye", however, I felt the
need to tell you that I have been deeply conscious of the loyalty and
support which all of you have always given to me. You have never failed
to fulfill your dangerous and difficult share of the operational tasks which,
as Army Commander, I have been charged to carry out. As the result,
the record of the First Canadian Army in its many battles, from Normandy
to NorthWest Germany, has been one of unbroken military success.
Thank you for everything you have been, and done. May good
fortune and great happiness be yours. And, may we meet again in Canada.

m orals" staged "Compo Happy!" in the grounds of a chateau north of Caen. This revue was given
throughout France, Belgium and Holland not only to the Division but also to the 53rd Division and
Second Army Troops. In Brussels it was seen at the Garrisnn -Music Hall Its successor was "The
Balmorals Christmas Revue" which opened at Nijmegen last December, toured the D1vision, and
played lor six weeks to Second Army. When the Division crossed into Germany, the "Balmorals"
had a simplified one-hour battle-dress show to suit the lack of facilities in a battered countryside,
and their first performance in Germany was given on February 28th in the ruins of a church at
Kessel on the edge of the Reichswald Forest. This show was put on as ofte'n as three times a day
in different localities.
The history uf the "Balmorals" now covers two wars tor the first performance given by
them took place in France on 8th August 1916 during the battle of tre Somme The stage, like so
many which the concert party of the HD has had to encounter, was an improvised one - the floor
of an ' open lorry. It is the same type of stage which served the present company twenty-seven
years later in Lybia. Alter sixteen days ol continuous fighting that show in 1916 given in the cool of
the summer. evening and in the midst of corn lands at harvest time, was much appreciated and
attended by practically the whole Division. From that date until the Armistice the company
continued its work of entertaining the troops in Flanders and France. Many distinguished audiences,
including Earl Haig, saw their shows in the marquee behind Divisional H. Q. at St. Nicolas during
1917. ln the winterof 1917-18, while the Division had one ol its rare rests in the Achiet Le Petit
area, an original comic opera, "Turnip Tops", was produced Captain Stanley, who wrote it, produced
it and played the leading part, found it was so successful - it played over 100 performances- that
he arranged for a special theatre to be built lor it- at Lebucquh!re. The village was captured by
the Germans on the very day the theatre should have been opened. F'rom 1915 onwards "The Sal-
morals" were seen in the lront line and at base, within the Division and throughout the B. E. F.
At the outbreak of the present war another concert party was formed by the Division in France
to carry on the tradition of the old "Balmorals". They played for several weeks in the Salle des
Fetes of a small village west of Lille in February 1940 and made one break in tradition - that of
female impersonation by men - by intrcducing four chorus girls into the company from a Lille night-
club. Nearly every member of .q1at -company was taken prisoner. With the ,reforming ' of the H. D.
at home yet another "Balmorals" came into being, and, w1th a company of 30, visited .nearly every
unit of the Division before starting on a three months' tour all over Scotland. They gave 52 perfor-
mances to audiences which varied in SLZe from 1800 to 100; and the show was adapted to suit large
theatres and small ones such as village halls, canteens and, on one occassion, a converted garage.
This show was broadcast in March 1941.
The second edition was planned with a company of 15, but its success was such
that, with only minor changes, the revue was staged 120 times and toured Scotland from the
Borders to John o Groats. The tour of the next edition was interrupted by the Division's move to Eng"
land before leaving for abroad, but was performed successfully in the south Twenty-one shows were
given Gn the troops hip going to the Middle Eas t and until the "Balmorals" a rr.lved in Tripoli, they
gave innumerable s.hows in the deser;t. "In Tripoli Tonight", prod1.1ced the nighl after arrival was
see.n by General Montgomery, the Army Commander. This was followed by "M V

' also at the
Miramare Theaue in Tripoli. The posslbli'ity ol airattack made concentTations of audiences
impossible at Mareth and before Gabes, so after-dark shows were devised "Moonlight Matinees"
. that were put on to the battalions in their forward positions. ln Algeria during the training lor the
Sicilian invasion "Make More Smoke!" a revue, was staged in theatres at Djejelli and In
Sicily, prior to going home "The Balmoral's" performed matinees out of doors to small units while
makmg the Mandanici Theatre in Barcellona their headquarters for evening shows. Back in England
they played extensively through Eastern and Southern Command, and in London at the Queensbury
Club and the Comedy Theatre. Just before the invasion the company switched (as it had done before
North Africa) to training plays and toured the Division, then in East Anglia, with a series of one-act
plays on "security."
In "Victory Cruise" the "Balmorals" have retuned to the style and size of revue they put on in
Scofland in 1940-1942 and towards the end of the North African Campaign.

Back In the Saddle
Ontario's traditionally conservative
voters stormed to the polls in droves this
week, and the Progressive Conserva.tive
Party won in a walk. Back into the saddle
as Premier went handsome, ruddy, grey
George Alexander Drew, sr, . a lawyer
whose ideas are as conservative as his
dress. He had been unhorsed last March
when Liberals and CCFers combined in
the legislature against him, but it would
not happen again. This time Premier Drew
had a clear-cut majority. Basically, the
desire of the people for a stable govern-
ment determined the outcome.
The election was packed with signifi-
cance. The socialist CCF, once strong,
took a terrible shellacking. The Party's
leader, Edward Bigelow Jolliffe, was beaten
in his O\\on riding. So was the Liberal
leader., obstreperous Mitchell Frederick
Hepburn. Most important, the election's
outcome might considerably bolster the
prestige of tlie Progressive Conservatiyes Cartly
for the IIiuch bigger battle that _# NTARIO' S GEORGE DREW
come (see below) . . Was his victory a portent?
June 11 THE SERVICES

In Montreal, a Progressive Conservative young (38), ruddy-faced Major General
organizer named Paul LaFontaine revealed Bertram Meryl Hoffmeister.
that his party, pro-conscriptionist to the Before war, tall, fair Bert Hoff-
extreme, would support some 30 anti-
conscriptionist "independents" in Quebec.
(The party's national leader, John Brack-
en, later partly confirmed it.) Behind
this incongruous arrangement was the ob-
vious hope that after the election
combined strength of the Progressive Con-
servatives and the "independents" would
be great enough to unseat Liberal Prime
; Minister William Lyon Mackenzie
permit formation of a Progressive Con-
servative government. A historical prece-
dent buttressed this hope: a similar deal
had worked in when Conservatives
and Quebec Nationalists, though differ-
ing on basic policies, had united to defeat
Canada's late, great Prime Minister Sir
Wilfrid Laurier.
The difference was that in 19II the
arrangement was kept hidden untiL the
election was over. Quebeckers, who still
speak bitterly of "the year of tlie great
betrayal," suddenly awoke then to find
their representatives in Parliament affili-
ated with the hated Tories. This time
the secret was out. Quebec would not be
bamboozled . again. The province might
not like King, but now he seemed sure of
a sizable bloc of its votes.

well that the Anny gave him the Seaforth
command.
No Scot himself, he gloried in the tradi-

officers dance Highland reels, flings and
sword dances, to the music of the regi-

P.Q;W.s
For the first time last week the rir,id
security blackout was lifted on prisoners
of war interned in Canada. The Army an-
nounced that on V-E day there were
33,843 P.O.W.s in the 15 camps across
.Canada (2,318 officers, 28,131 men, 3;227
merchant seamen, 167 medical personnel).
There were also civilian internees-4 21
Japs, 310 Germans, 6o Italians, 30 others.
About 7 5 have died during the war
period; some 200 have escaped, but of
these all but one were captured.* The two
biggest camps are at Lethbridge (13,6oo
prisoners) and Medicine Hat (12,750).
The dreary job of guarding the camps is
performed by 5,500 Veterans Guards, old
soldiers of World War I.
Since last year, all physically fit enlisted
men have had to work. Last year, 8,zoo of
them cut 6oo,ooo cords of pulpwood.
Others work in tarui.eries, brickyards,
camp shops. At Sherbrooke, Quebec, they
have produced $z,ooo, ooo worth of shoes,
shirts, kit bags, etc.
There are no big-shot prisoners in Cana-
da. There are four generals, one of :whom
was shot down on .a sightseeing flight over
England.
As in the U.S. , P.O.W.s' diet is being cut
down. They will still receive 3,000 calories
daily. But they will eat more kidneys,
livers, hearts, fewer prime cuts of meat
and imported foods, such as oranges.

Louise, as they had 24 years before. De-
tectives searched the house, as they had
searched Jake Denton's. The cellar fioor
was untouched. But near an avocado tree
in the backyard they found a mound of
earth. Inside was the body of Margaret
Logan. She had been shot in the back.
Two weeks -later an inquest cleared
Louise's husband, but not Louise. Shy
little Lee Judson, walked from the hearing
straight to a downtown office building,
plunged eight floors down a stair well.
Amazing, But . . . Thrice-widowed
Louise, once again the defendant at a
murder trial , saw the District Attorney
slip the Denton trial transcript into evi-
dence against her. She heard him describe
the deadly parallel, noted that the jury-,-
eieven women and one man-appeared to
find it amazing but not incredible. This
time, Louise decided to testify.
She had a logical story: Arthur Logan
had killed his wife in an insane fit; Louise
had buried the body because--she smiled
a little cynically-the world certainly
would unite against her in disbelief if she
reported the death. She spent four days
on the stand. In the county jail, her
fellow-prisoners rallied to her support :
TIME, JUNE 11, 1945
U.S. A.T w-A R
of Operations came a breakdown of the
losses sustained in that bitter, sweeping
campaign. From D-day to V-E day- the
Army counted- 65,93I killed, 38I,507
wounded. Costliest week (Dec. I9-25) was
during Rundstedt's counterattack at Ar-
dennes, when 27 ,I94 U.S. soldiers were
lost to combat (I , 7 2 I killed) . Bloodiest
week: the Normandy landing (June 6-I2),
when 2,88o men were killed.
Some divisions took such losses that
they would have vanished completely had
it not been for replacements. The valjant
3rd, which fought from North Africa to
Berchtesgaden, suffered a total of 34,224
casualties-more than the ai'
o divisions. The 45th and 36th each
list some 27,000 men. These three, outfits
the 9th and 4th Divisions were the
.est hit. Total casualties of the five
'ons : 133,394.
the Pacific, the Army, Navy and
rines already counted the toll at 67,-
'3 dead, I 20,893 wounded, 30,3_88 missing.
THE ENEMY
Propaganda?
The Japanese learned last week that
their bomb-carrying balloons had killed
six U.S. civilians (see SciENCE). This
week they promised even more dire re-
sults. Radio Tokyo ferocious!); announced
* British Empire casualties. for five and a half that each balloon would soon be equipped
years of war: I,l28,JI5- with a "death defying" pilot.
HYDE PARK: MEMORIAL DAY, 1945
. At President Truman's request a Memorial Day tradition was observed at
Hyde Park last week. This picture shows Brigadier General George Honnen,
commandant of cadets at West Point, laying a wreath on the grave, as yet un-
marked, of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. During the ceremony a woman in black
(see upper left) walked into the sunny garden,. stood quietly in the background.

REMARKS
All Commanders and Commanding Officers,
Canadian Forma tiona and Units,
First Canadian Arny,
GOC-in-C 5-5
!.Tain First Canadian Army
10 Jul 45.
1 The time is apprca.ching when the "individual priority" system
'ot repatriation o soldires (all .ranks) of the First Canadian A:Jmty
- brought about by the need of volunteers for the Canadian Army
.Pe.cific ]'aroe and the consideration g1 ven to those with very long
service, overseas - will come to a general end. The repatriation
of the balance, and the bulk, of the First Canadian Army will then
be almost entirely carried out b;; the despa:tvh of units, and sub-
units, which will be locally re-mustered to form, as nearly as
territorial components.
2 Although the need for an ordE:rly repatriation and subsequent
demobilization of the First Canadian Army territorial uni t_s and
sub-uniJcs, rather than by drafts of indiviuunla has been fairly well
expl'ained in the pamphlet "After Victory in :furope" ('to which I would
agai# refer you), I believe it would be well if I went over, once
more, the more imrortant reasons why the "Unit system" should now
be whole-heartedly adopted.
3 The basis of "First Over, First Back', or "First In, First
Out", or "High l"'oint Scores before Low" has a strong sentimental
influence. It is not, however, a rational frocedure and one whidh
it is impossible to carry out, other than partially. Indeed, it
has already been :.9roceeded with to the )ract:ica.ble 11Eit in the
First Canadian l't.rmy, as it is tol1ay. '.'!e a:!'e already experiencing
acute shortages in .3Jror,erly qualified Coll"..ulissioned, \'{arrant and Non-
Commissioned Officers, in essential tradcanen, such. as butchers,
clerks, cooks, storemen, shoemakers, etc. Should the present period
of "repatriation by disintegration" further continue, it will not
be possible adeq11.ately to Inaintain and ad.:linister the troops yet .
remaining in this country. nor will it, even nov,r, be easy to bring
the units and o:f the Canadian Ar;,'y, so considerably
changed in their personnel, again u.:_-; to the very high standard wh.fch
they have possessed in the
4 It is quite essential, therefore, that everyone of yop
loyally accept the view tr..a. t tho has come when "High ?o.int
Soores" can no longer be an influencing factor in repatriation,
and the deepatch 'of the bal, ance, and bulk, of the First
Canadian Army now be done in a selected sequence of
Groups, units and sub-units. The "time factor" of the individual
must give way to the "orderly ore;aniza tion" of the many. The
personal longing to "cet home quickly" must be subordinated to the
higher duty of each one of us to think, and act, in terms of the
greater good-for the greater number.
5 I want you, also, to take steps to explain to all ranks
