INTRODUCTION
Work happiness has always been an area of interest and concern in Singapore. Our island state, without natural resources, relies heavily on its
human capital to grow and power the economy. And as the country advances and expectations rise, Singaporeans are no longer content with
sustenance employment, looking instead for quality of life, self-fulfllment and other altruistic values. Coupled with an economy that enjoys
a low unemployment rate, being happy at work is more important than ever and employers need to constantly fnd ways to keep workers
satisfed.
We hope that the results of this report will provide some insight into the emotional well-being of workers in Singapore.
ABOUT THE SURVEY
First launched in 2009, the JobsCentral Work Happiness Indicator is a study to measure how happy Singapore workers are with their jobs. The
2012 survey has 3,299 respondents and data was collected via an online questionnaire between 20th September and 19th October, 2012. The
survey was voluntary and open to all Singapore workers aged 16 years and above. Incomplete and duplicated responses were discarded and
do not contribute to this count.
Results of this survey are statistically signifcant. At a confdence level of 95% and labour force population of over 3.2 million
1
in Singapore,
the sample size has a margin error or confdence interval of 1.71%. This means that we are 95% confdent that the results of the survey are
refective of the general population with an error margin of +/- 1.71%.
CALCULATING WORK HAPPINESS SCORE
The JobsCentral Work Happiness Indicator uses a 100-point scoring scale. Respondents were presented with a list of common work-related
attributes that they are required to rank in the order of importance. Next, respondents were required to assign a satisfaction score to each
of these attributes. Each work attribute is then tabulated with a weighted score and mapped into a 100-point scale. The higher the score, the
happier an employer is considered to be.
Work Happiness scores are calculated for the mean of the overall sample as well as by various parameters such as gender, age, academic
qualifcations, job functions, work industries and gross monthly salary.
