    India's overall balance of payments showed a surplus of $11.2 billion in the first quarter of 2014, an improvement from a deficit of $346 million in the same period of 2013. The current account deficit narrowed to $7.9 billion from $21.8 billion previously, as the trade deficit in goods declined. However, the current account deficit was still negative due to higher investment income payments. The capital account surplus increased substantially to $19.8 billion from $20.6 billion, led by a rise in foreign direct investment in India. Foreign exchange reserves increased by $11.2 billion in the first quarter of 2014.
