I. READING COMPREHENSION (8pts)

TEXT :
Close to every plush and posh residential area in Nigeria cities sprawls (1) a
neighbourhood of poverty and pain where fellow nigerians struggle like pigs in squalor(2)
and poverty. From the 1004 luxurious flats in Victoria Island in Lagos, Nigerias
lawmakers during the second republic, every day for four years, stared down at the
residents of Maroko, one of the most pitiable centers of poverty in the world.
According to sociologists, the growing disparity between the haves and the havenots
began during the colonial era when Nigerias cities became the centres of commerce and
industry, thus including the migration from the rural to the urban areas.
That development had two disastrous effects over the years. First, it led to food
shortage because the rural areas lost the able-bodied men and women who would
otherwise have tilled and cultivated the land. Secondly, it gave rise to the growth of slums.
When the colonial officers move out of their exclusive residences, and set in
reserved areas that was lined with trees, the indigenous nouveaux riches moved in and
their numerous servants resided nearby in shacks. As the influx into the urban centres
continued, these servants found themselves having to house both close and distant
relatives from far and wide, and in time, the slums grew bigger and became more
established, making successive governments reluctant to demolish them and render
thousands of people homeless.
The result is that more and more rural dwellers have continued to swell the constant
reminder of the yawning gap between their struggling inhabitants and those who, by
contrast, have so much money at their disposal that they have developed the habit of
spraying it at parties and various ceremonies. Such is the unequal distribution of the
national cake that the few are now filthy rich(3) while the many are stinking poor(6).
