The Osprey class is an older design2 slower and less agile than the newer
;ightingale class. 0owe#er2 it does possess higher cargo capacity2 longer
endurance2 and boosted range comparati#ely
Typically ser#ing as a message boat or a system patrol"search and rescue
#essel2 the Osprey has had a successful career in many roles with the
9nterstellar &atrol and pri#ate security"self-defense firms.
The Osprey sports a good deal of armor2 and impro#ed maneu#ering thrusters2
making it unusually agile for a #essel of its siIe. &ilots who fly the #essel
regularly ha#e de#eloped a fondness for the #essel; its ease of handling and
impro#ed flight characteristics ha#e allowed the #essel to safely land e#en after
suffering hea#y damage2 or with multiple systems failures.
Surplus Osprey class #essels ha#e made their way into the commercial market
and are flown by se#eral transport and prospecting ser#ices2 as well as being
used for customs and system patrol duties by #arious local go#ernments.

The #essel pictured is the 01S Surprise2 an early model #essel operated as a
long range patrol and emergency response #essel2 capable of carrying a small
detachment of marines and medical personnel for emergencies as well conduct
search and rescue operations when larger and"or more capable #essels are not
a#ailable to respond.
The Surprise has e6panded crew and troop accommodations2 replacing a
significant portion of its cargo area for marine Fuarters2 along with storage for a
four-wheel armored scout car for surface operations. 9n addition2 it is supplied
with a full galley and supply locker2 as well as a compact medical bay. The
#essel is currently assigned a ten-man marine sFuad and two-man support
section for operating the scout car2 and remote-operated aerial drone for recon
and communications.
9ts commander2 $ieutenant Commander 1arie KutIow2 has recei#ed awards for
distinguished ser#ice2 after her #essel responded to a distress call from mining
outpost 3(+ Olympic. The compound was under attack from terrorists seeking to
steal a shipment of pitchblende2 which was awaiting shipment to a fuel
processing facility. 7eploying her small marine team2 she used the guns of the
Surprise to disable the grounded transport and pro#ide supporting fire for the
marines as they e6ecuted an attack on the central holding facility where the
terrorists had taken se#eral hostages.
@unnery Sergeant Kira $inn lead her four-man section into the facility2 killing
si6teen terrorists2 and freeing the hostages after suffering only one casualty2 and
losing one hostage in the process. hile the gunfire caused se#ere damage to
the facility2 resulting in considerable financial loss to the Olympic >esources
Corporation2 it did pre#ent the terrorists from gaining access to se#eral tons of
pitchblende2 as well as the necessary eFuipment to produce weapons grade
uranium.
$t Commander KutIowJs superiors rewarded her swift response and personal
initiati#e by offering her the command of a newer class of #essel. 0owe#er2 she
turned down the reassignment2 preferring to remain aboard the Surprise with her
current crew.
