. Thus for these fluids, the plot of shear stress against velocity
gradient is a straight line through the origin. The slope of the line determines the viscosity.
The non-Newtonian fluids are further classified as pseudo-plastic, dilatant and Bingham plastic.
For non-Newtonian fluid (
Where A and B are constant depending upon type of fluid and condition of flow
Pseudoplastic fluid (Shear thining): n<1 & B=0
The reason for which the apparent viscosity of a pseudoplastic fluid decreases with increase in the shear rate
may be qualitatively attributed to a breakdown of loosely bonded aggregates by the shear effect of flow.
Example: paper pulp, rubber solution, paints, blood, polymetric solutions
Dilatant fluid (shear thicking): n>1 & B=0
The increment of apparent viscosity with increase in shear rate for dilatant fluids may be due to the shift of a
closely packed particulate system to a more open arrangement under shear, which may entrap some of the
liquid.
Example: butter, magnetite, galena & ferro silicon
Binghum plastic: n=1 & B
These fluid requires a finite stress before beginning to flow. Ex. Mud, tooth paste
Thixotropic fluid: n<1 & B
Viscosity increases with time. Enamels, wet clay under suspension
Rheopectic fluid: n>1 & B
Viscosity decreases with time. ex. Gypsum solution in water
Isothermal Bulk Modulus (k

Compressibility (): it is inverse of bulk modulus of elasticity.
Surface Tension, Pressure inside Drop, Bubble and Jet
The phenomenon of surface tension arises due to the two kinds of intermolecular forces
(i) Cohesion : The force of attraction between the molecules of a liquid
(ii) Adhesion : The force of attraction between unlike molecules, i.e. between the molecules of different liquids or
between the molecules of a liquid and those of a solid body when they are in contact with each other
Surface tension is inversely proportional to temperature and it also acts when fluid is at rest
Surface tension is define as force per unit length
It is due to surface tension that a curved liquid interface in equilibrium results in a greater pressure at the
concave side of the surface than that at its convex side.
Pressure inside drop (solid like sphere)
R is radius of drop
Pressure inside bubble
Pressure inside a cylindrical liquid jet
where h= rise in capillary, , d= diameter of tube,
capillary action is due to adhesion and cohesion both.
