Microcontrollers
MSP430 Microcontroller DNA
MSP430 Microcontrollers (MCUs) from Texas Instruments (TI) are
16-bit, RISC-based, mixed-signal processors designed specically for
ultra-low-power (ULP). MSP430 MCUs have the right mix of intelligent
peripherals, ease of use, low cost and lowest power consumption for thou-
sands of applications including yours. TI offers robust design support
for the MSP430 MCU platform along with technical documents, training,
tools and software to help designers develop products and release them
to market faster. Learn more at www.ti.com/msp430.
Ultra-Low Power
The MSP430 MCU is designed specically for ultra-low-power applications.
Its exible clocking system, multiple low-power modes, instant wakeup
and intelligent autonomous peripherals enable true ultra-low-power
optimization, dramatically extending battery life.
Flexible Clocking System The MSP430 MCU clock system has the
ability to enable and disable various clocks and oscillators which allow the
device to enter various low-power modes (LPMs). The exible clocking
system optimizes overall current consumption by only enabling the required
clocks when appropriate.
Main Clock (MCLK) CPU source that may be driven by the internal
Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO) up to 25 MHz or with external crystal.
Auxiliary Clock (ACLK) Source for individual peripheral modules
driven by the internal low-power oscillator or external crystal.
Sub-Main Clock (SMCLK) Source for faster individual peripheral
modules that may be driven by the internal DCO up to 25 MHz or with
external crystal.
Instant Wakeup The MSP430 MCU can wake-up instantly from
LPMs. This ultra-fast wake-up is enabled by the MSP430 MCUs
internal digitally controlled oscillator (DCO), which can source up to
25 MHz and be active and stable in 1s. Instant wake-up functionality
is important in ultra-low power applications since it allows the
microcontroller to use the CPU in very efcient bursts and spend more
time in LPMs.
Zero-Power Brown-Out Reset (BOR) The MSP430 MCUs BOR is
always enabled and active in all modes of operation. This ensures
the most reliable performance possible while maintaining ultra-low-
power consumption. The BOR circuit detects low supply voltages and
resets the device when power is applied or removed. This functionality is
especially critical in battery-powered applications.
www.ti.com/msp430 Ultra-Low Power is in our DNA
Ultra-fast 1-s DCO start-up allows MSP430-based systems to
remain in low-power modes for the longest possible interval
extending battery life. The DCO is fully user programmable.

Analog
ADC10/ADC10_A, ADC12/ADC12_A The ADC module
supports fast, 200-ksps, 10- or 12-bit analog-to-digital
conversions. The module features an SAR core with 5, 8, 12
or 16 input channels; sample-selection control; a 1.5/2.5 V
reference generator; and an internal temperature sensor.
The ADC10 features a data-transfer controller (DTC) and the
ADC12 features a 16-word conversion-and-control buffer.
These added features allow samples to be converted and
stored without CPU intervention. ADC10_A and ADC12_A
provide improved resolution at lower power.
SD16/SD16_A The SD16/SD16_A modules each feature
up to seven 16-bit sigma-delta A/D converters with an
internal 1.2-V reference. Each converter has up to eight
fully differential multiplexed inputs, including a built-in
temperature sensor. The converters are second-order
oversampling sigma-delta modulators with selectable over-
sampling ratios of up to 1024 (SD16_A) or 256 (SD16).
Comparator_A, Comparator_A+, Comparator_B
The Comparator_A/A+/B modules support precision-slope
analog-to-digital conversions, supply-voltage supervision,
and monitoring of external analog signals for accurate
measurement of voltage and resistor values. The modules
feature selectable low-power modes and a programmable
reference-voltage generator. Comparator_A+ offers eight
inputs and an input multiplexer. Comparator_B+ offers 16
inputs, an integrated reference-voltage generator, and a
voltage-hysteresis generator, making it ideal for capacitive-
sense applications.
DAC12 The DAC12 module is a 12-bit, voltage-output DAC
featuring internal/external reference selection and program-
mable settling time for optimal power consumption. It can
be confgured in 8- or 12-bit mode. When multiple DAC12
modules are present, they may be grouped together for syn-
chronous update operation.
OpAmp The MSP430 integrated operational ampliers
feature single-supply, low-current operation with rail-to-rail
outputs and programmable settling times. Internal, program-
mable feedback resistors and connections between multiple
op amps allow for a variety of software-selectable congu-
ration options including unity-gain mode, comparator mode,
inverting PGA, non-inverting PGA, and differential and instru-
mentation ampliers.
Timers
Timer_A/Timer_B Timer_A and Timer_B are asyn-
chronous 16-bit timers/counters with up to seven capture/
compare registers and four operating modes. The timers
support multiple capture/compares, PWM outputs, and
interval timing. They also have extensive interrupt capabilities.
Watchdog+ (WDT+) The WDT+ performs a controlled
system restart after a software problem occurs. If the selected
time interval expires, a system reset is generated. If the
watchdog function is not needed in an application, the
module can be congured as an interval timer and can
generate interrupts at selected time intervals.
Basic Timer (BT) The BT has two independent 8-bit
timers that can be cascaded to form a 16-bit timer/counter. Both
timers can be read and written by software. The BT is extended
to provide an integrated RTC. An internal calendar
compensates for months with less than 31 days and includes
leap-year correction.
Real-Time Clock (RTC_A, RTC_B, RTC_C) RTC_A/B/C
are 32-bit hardware counter modules that provide clock
counters with a calendar, a exible programmable alarm,
and calibration. The RTC_B and RTC_C include a switch-
able battery backup system that provides the ability for the
RTC to operate when the primary supply fails. The RTC_C
also includes temperature compensation.
System
Power Management Module (PMM) The PMM gen-
erates a supply voltage for the core logic, and provides
several mechanisms for the supervision and monitoring
of both the voltage applied to the device and the voltage
generated for the core. It is integrated with a low-dropout
voltage regulator (LDO), brown-out reset (BOR), and a
supply voltage supervisor and monitor.
Brown-Out Reset (BOR) The BOR circuit detects low
supply voltages and resets the device by triggering a
power-on reset (POR) signal when power is applied or
removed. The MSP430 MCUs zero-power BOR circuit is
continuously turned on, including in all low-power modes.
Supply-Voltage Supervisor (SVS) The SVS is a con-
fgurable module used to monitor the AVCC supply voltage
or an external voltage. The SVS can be confgured to set a
ag or generate a power-on reset (POR) when the supply
voltage or external voltage drops below a user-selected
threshold.
Enhanced Data Integrity (EDI) The EDI provides ad-
ditional functionality over normal ash memory controllers
including higher reliability of ash content and overall
system integrity. This is especially valuable in harsh
environments and application areas requiring data integrity,
e.g. medical applications. The additional level of security is
reached by calculating more dimensional checksums.
Input/Output MSP430 devices have up to 12 digital
I/O ports implemented. Each port has eight I/O pins. Every
I/O pin can be congured as either input or output, and
can be individually read or written to. Ports P1 and P2 have
interrupt capability. MSP430F2xx, F5xx and some F4xx
devices feature built-in, individually congurable pull-up or
pull-down resistors.
Direct Memory Access (DMA) Controller The DMA
controller transfers data from one address to another across
the entire address range without CPU intervention. The DMA
increases the throughput of peripheral modules and reduces
system power consumption. The module features up to three
independent transfer channels.
Hardware Multiplier (MPY/MPY32) The hardware-
multiplier module supports 8/16-bit x 8/16-bit- signed
and unsigned multiply with optional multiply and
accumulate functionality. This peripheral does not interfere
with CPU activities and can be accessed by the DMA.
The MPY on all MSP430F5xx and some MSP430F4xx
devices feature up to 32-bit x 32-bit.
Communication and Interface
RF Front End The exible CC1101 sub-1GHz transceiver
delivers the sensitivity and blocking performance required
to achieve successful communication links in any RF
environment. It also features low current consumption and
supports exible data rates and modulation formats.

specication and supports control, interrupt and bulk
transfers at a data rate of 12 Mbps (full speed). The module
supports USB suspend, resume and remote wake-up
operations and can be congured for up to eight input
and eight output endpoints. The module includes an
integrated physical interface (PHY); a phase-locked loop
(PLL) for USB clock generation; and a exible power-supply
system enabling bus-powered and self-powered devices.

2
C) The universal serial interface (USI)
module is a synchronous serial communication interface
with a data length of up to 16-bits and can support SPI and
I
2
C communication with minimal software.
Metering
Scan Interface (SIF) The SIF module, a program-
mable state machine with an analog front end, is used to
automatically measure linear or rotational motion with the
lowest possible power consumption. The module features
support for different types of LC and resistive sensors and
for quadrature encoding.
ESP430 (integrated in FE42xx devices) The
ESP430CE module incorporates the SD16, a hardware
multiplier, and the ESP430 embedded processor engine
for single-phase energy-metering applications. The module
performs metering calculations independent of the CPU.

Hardware Development Tools
Only one programming tool, the MSP430

Flash Emulation Tool (FET),

is required to download and debug code on any ash-based MSP430
device. MSP430 FETs, which are available for both USB and parallel ports,
allow the user to debug in-system at full speed and modify registers in real
time. The MSP430 MCUs on-chip Embedded Emulation Module (EEM) allows
advanced debugging features including up to 8-hardware breakpoints and
triggers as well as cycle counters, clock control and usage of an integrated
trace buffer.
Production Programming
The MSP-GANG430 can help automate mass production by enabling
programming of up to eight ash-based MSP430 MCUs simultaneously
without a PC.
For high-volume customers, masked ROM and factory programmed
ash devices can be ordered. The ROM process takes 8-12 weeks from
the receipt of a customers veried code to the production of the rst
silicon. Flash devices take 6-8 weeks.
Target Boards
Target boards are available for as little as $75
and bundles including the FET programmer are
available for $149. Most target boards include
a ZIF-socket allowing you to add or change the
MSP430 device easily. For more information,
visit www.ti.com/msp430tools
