A map is a pictorial representation of a part or whole of the earths surface drawn to scale on
a flat piece of paper.

3. Mention two important aspects which make up the title of a map.
The title of a map is made of the name of the region depicted and the theme of the map.
4. What do you mean by scale of a map?
The scale is a ratio between distance between two places on a map and the corresponding
distance between the same two places on the ground.
5. Mention three ways in which the scale of a map can be expressed.
The three ways are- as a statement, as a representative fraction and as a linear scale
6. If the distance between two places on the ground is 100 km and the distance between them on the map
is 4 cm, express the scale of the map as a statement.
1cm= 25 km,

2 cm= 50 km,

4 cm= 100 km

7. In the above example, express the scale of the map as a Representative Fraction.

Grid system is used to locate places on a map, draw an area to proportion on a map and to
determine the area of the map
12. Mention two ways in which the direction of any place can be expressed.
Direction can be expressed as a Convention ( N,S,E,W etc.) or as a bearing(angle)
13. Draw a rose diagram to illustrate sixteen conventional directions.

14. What do you mean by key or legend?


Legend is a set of colours, symbols and shading patterns used to depict ground features on a
map.
15. How are topographical maps different from other conventional maps?
Topographical maps show height using contours and helps to visualize the unevenness of
the land.
16. Mention how topographical maps are useful in the following areas.
a. Defence
Military uses these maps to plan their strategy during war time.
b. Building railways
Railway tracks are laid only after levelling of the land taking help of these maps.
