Subject: Drug Addiction in Pakistan
Introduction: In compliance with your directive no. 452/A, I submit my report on the issue of drug
addiction, which has become a serious social problem in the country.
Discussion: Pakistan is notorious for drug addiction. According to government sources, 600,000 people
enter into drug addiction in Pakistan annually. Unfortunately, people of every age, including youngsters
particularly, are involved in drug addiction. Teenagers mostly abuse substances in order to lose weight,
relieve stress and increase confidence. Children get involved due to pressure from friends, alienation
with parents, sexual or verbal abuse, bad performance in study and many others.
As far as its effects are concerned, drug addiction proves very harmful to youth and aged alike. It not
only spoils the addicts physical health but also leaves negative impact on their personality
development. Inferiority complex, violence, intolerance, inclination towards crime and frustration are
some of the symptoms commonly traced in our drug addicted youth.
Conclusion: The whole scenario shows how much serious the nature of the problem is in our society and
rightly calls for the quick and determined action on part of the authorities concerned.
Suggestions/Recommendations: The government as well as private addiction treatment facilities must
provide incentives to drug abusers so that they are willing to be treated.
Judges should refer drug addicts for treatment rather than sending them to jail where drugs are easily
available.
Most drug addiction treatment centres are located in big cities. The need of the hour is for treatment
facilities to be established in small cities and towns. At the same time, incentives for professionals in this
field should also be provided. Currently, they lack training facilities.
Yours faithfully,
XYZ
