a) Analysis of The Mighty Tiger

Plot
The story begins with Gruno, a fierce and mighty tiger who lives in the
jungle. Gruno likes to chase, catch and jump on the other animals. This
makes the other animals afraid of him.
As soon as Gruno is looking for food, he comes to a village and sees
strange animals with 2 legs are bathing in a river and doing something over a
fire. So, he follows them. He doesnt know that they are people. When the
villagers see Gruno, they quickly run away and get into their houses. They
wait until Gruno leaves. Then, all the villagers gather to plan about what they
should do. They plan to take turn to provide food for Gruno so that he will
have enough food to eat and will not disturb them.
0ne day, Gruno sees a chili plant which is strange to him. He thinks that
the chili plant is small and is unable to fight him. So, he jumps on it and eats
all the fruits up. His mouth feels very hot. Hence, he drinks a lot of water from
the river and this causes him unable to move. Grunos stomach is full of
water, so he feels tired. That night, Gruno sleeps by the river.
When Gruno wakes up in the next morning, he still feels tired. So, he is
not going to chase any animals. He walks around the jungle and tries to make
friends with other animals instead. Gruno asks the monkey to play with him,
but the monkey refuses to do so because he thinks that Gruno wants to trick
him. Gruno comes to a high cliff. He feels lonely.

Soon, Gruno realizes that it is his entire fault. Gruno promises that he will
be good to other animals. He hopes that all the animals would be his friends
and are not afraid of him.

Setting
The Mighty Tiger sets in a jungle where Gruno and the other animals live
in. This is the place where Gruno always chases and catches other animals.
This is also the place where Gruno tries to make friends with other animals
and persuades the monkey to play with him in pg. 28. Other than that, the
river is also one of the places mentioned in the story. In pg. 24, Gruno sees a
group of villagers are bathing in the river and this causes him to get
interested. In page 27, Gruno sleeps by the river because his stomach is full
of water and is unable to move. In addition, the story takes place at a high
cliff, which is located at the edge of the jungle. At the end of the story, Gruno
comes to the high cliff and thinks about the reason of why none of the animals
wants to be his friend and play with him. In pg. 30, this is the place where
Gruno promises himself to be good to other animals, helps them and not to
chase them anymore so that they will not be frightened of him.

Characters

Gruno
Gruno, the fierce and mighty tiger is the protagonist of the story. He likes
chasing, catching and jumping on other animals. That is why all the animals
are afraid of him. This can be seen in pg. 24. Once he roars, all the other

animals would run away from him. Besides being fierce, Gruno is also
arrogant. Since all the animals and the villagers are afraid of him, Gruno
thinks that he is the strongest animal in the world. Because of arrogant, he
also thinks that the chili plant is too small to fight him. In pg. 27, he eats all the
fruits of the chili plant and this causes his mouth to feel very hot that he really
needs to drink water. Moreover, in pg. 28, none of the animals in the jungle
wants to make friend with Gruno. Although Gruno tries hard to persuade the
monkey to play with him, the monkey still refuses to do so. Gruno feels lonely.
He starts to think about his own behavior. At last, Gruno realizes that it is his
entire fault because he is the one who makes other animals afraid of him. He
promises to be humble and be good to others. This can be seen in pg. 30.

The villagers
The villagers who stay in a village outside the jungle are one of the
characters in the story. In pg. 24, some of the villagers are bathing in a river
while some are doing something over a fire when Gruno first sees them. Pg
26 stated that, all the villagers are afraid of Gruno. They quickly run away into
their houses when they see Gruno enters their village. In pg. 26, it shows that
the villagers are intelligent in solving problems. Instead of allowing Gruno to
eat them up, they come out with a brilliant idea in which all of them will take
turn to supply food for Gruno daily. By doing this, Gruno will have enough of
food to eat and will not disturb them.

The monkey
Though the monkey does not figure largely in the storys plot, but it is
one of the most important character. In pg. 28, the monkey refuses to play
with Gruno although Gruno tries very hard to invite and pursue. The monkey
thinks that it is Grunos trick. So, it ends up throwing fruits at Gruno. This
makes Gruno to think of his own behavior and the reason why all the animals
refuse to play with him.

The animals
Pg. 24 stated that, all the animals in the jungle are afraid of Gruno
because he always likes to chase and jump on them. They run away
whenever they see Gruno. When Gruno asks all the animals to be his friends,
they refuse to be his friends. They know that Gruno is fierce. This can be seen
in pg 28 .

Moral value
In this story, Hyacinth Gaudart emphasizes on the factor of humble in
which we should not be arrogant. In page 26, Gruno thinks that he is the
strongest animal in the world and he must be famous. This shows that he is
arrogant. Gruno should be more humble and treat the other animals in the
jungle well instead. In pg. 27, Gruno thinks that the chili plant is too small to
fight him. So he eats all the fruits of the chili plant and this makes his mouth
feels very hot. The moral value, we should be intelligent in solving a problem
is shown in pg. 26. To ensure their safety in the village, all the villagers plan to
provide food for Gruno daily. By doing so, Gruno will have enough of food to

eat and will not disturb them. Thus, this shows the cleverness of the villagers
in finding solution to solve the problem that they are facing. Cooperative is
shown among the villagers in this story. They discuss and solve a problem
together. Pg .26 stated that, all the villagers take turns to leave food for
Gruno in the jungle. Everyday, Gruno comes to the village and he has more
than enough food to eat.

Theme
The theme of this story is kindness. This story conveys the importance of
kindness in treating others. Throughout this story, Gruno is being fierce,
arrogant and mighty. Pg. 24 stated that Gruno is being unkind because he
always chases and catches other animals. That is why all the animals run
away and refuses to be Grunos friends when he tries to make friends with
them. This can be seen in pg. 28. If one treats others well, others will treat him
or her well too. This is because, what goes around comes back around.

One night, Mobi, the greedy boy enters Miss Jus garden and eats the big

all over the garden.
Mobi promises Miss Ju that he will look after and work hard in the
garden. Soon, the villagers are not hungry anymore because there are fruits
and vegetables for them to eat.

Setting

hungry. In pg. 32, Miss Ju owns a garden in which many fruits and vegetables
are planted. She always gives them to the villagers. In pg. 33, the garden also
the place where the old women gives Miss Ju a seed to be planted when Miss
Ju is standing under a tree looking the dying leaves and fruits . Other than

buns that fall out from the big bun. In pg. 38, Mobi enters Miss Jus garden
and eats the big bun at one night. Moreover, Miss Jus house is one of the
setting mentioned this story. In pg. 33, this is the place where Miss Ju cooks

In pg. 33, it is mentioned that Miss Jus garden begins to die when she
accidentally falls into a deep drain and stays on bed for many days. This

Mobi is the one of antagonist in the big bun. Instead of eating the small
buns, he wants more than that. In pg. 38, Mobi thinks that eating the big bun
will be better than eating all the small buns. When Mobi tries to take the

stated in pg. 39 .

Old Mushu
In pg. 32, old Mushu finds Miss Ju who falls into a deep drain. He asks
all the villagers to help Miss Ju who is hurt.

The villagers

The villagerss character can be interpreted as dependent in which they

depend on others rather than working hard to overcome problem. Pg. 32
stated that the villagers are poor and always hungry. But, they depend on
Miss Ju to supply and provide them the fruits and vegetables from her garden

instead of finding solution for the problem on their own. Moreover, the
villagers have no food to eat again after the big bun disappear.

Moral value
The first moral value that can be seen in this story is generous. This is
shown by the old women who helps Miss Ju when her garden begins to die. In
pg. 33, the old women gives Miss Ju a seed to be planted under a tree. The
seed ends up turning into a big bun that supplies food for all the villagers.
Besides that, the story reminds that we should not be greedy. In pg. 38,
Mobi, the greedy boy eats the big bun instead of those small buns. This
causes the big bun disappears and the villagers to have no food to eat again.
The moral value, we should be honest can be learnt from this story. Pg.
38 stated that Mobi, the greedy boy who eats the big bun realizes but does
not admit his fault at first because he know that the villagers would be angry
with him. In pg. 39, Mobi decides to tell Miss Ju the truth at last because he
couldnt sleep well at night and become thin and pale. Thus, he should be
honest in admitting his fault.

Theme
The theme of this story is kindness. In pg. 32 of this story, Miss Ju owns
a garden where there are always a lot of vegetables and fruits. She always
give the fruits and vegetables to the villagers. This shows that she is kind and
generous. Besides that, in pg. 36, Miss Ju calls all the villagers to her garden
when there are a lot of small little buns fall out from the big bun. All the
villagers eat the buns happily. In addition, kindness is also portrayed by the

old woman who gives Miss Ju a seed when Miss Jus garden begins to die
and the villagers have no food to eat soon. The seed turned into a big bun
that contains a lot of small buns that supply food for all the villagers.

b) Literary elements in the poem entitled Im big and how they

enhance the meaning

The first literary element that can be found in this poem is repetition. The
words Im, big, very and grow are being repeated in the poem. The
repetition of these words in the poem can help to enhance meaning. The
repetition of the phrase Im big shows that the little boy is trying hard to
emphasize that he is the strongest and the most powerful one among his
friends. This is clearly illustrated in the poem. Moreover, the repetition of the
phrase very big also shows that the little boy has the power to grab his
friends pen and most probably his friend is afraid to get it back from him. The
repetition of the word grow shows how the little boy worries that his friend
who he usually bullies will grow faster and bigger than him because he heard
that some people might grow faster than the others.
The sounds that are used in this poems are assonance, consonance and
alliteration. The use of assonance can be seen in the words can, grab and
pen in line 4 and the words get, pen and back in line 6. While
pronouncing the assonance sounds in these two lines, students should stress
on the vowel sound. Line 4 emphasize on the meaning in which the little boy
can grab his friends pen, while line 6 stressed that his friends are afraid to
get his pen back.

The use of consonance can be found in the words can and pen in line
4. The use of consonance here focus on the meaning that the little boy can
grab the pen.
Besides that, the words but and that in line 9 also uses consonance .
Alliteration is also being used in this poem. Alliteration can be seen in
line 7 Because Im big, line 6 to try and get your pen back, line 13 this
means that, line 15 you may be big and the last line This is one of the
things I worry about. The word this in the line This is one of the things I
worry about refers to the possibility of the little boy growing smaller than his
friend, and that is the problem or thing that makes him worried.

This poem talks about a naughty little boy who is trying to emphasize
that he is the biggest, most powerful and strongest among his friends. This is
proven through the repetition of the phrase Im big in the first stanza. Line 4
in the first stanza, I can grab your pen shows that the little boy has the
power to do the things that he wish to. He can grab his friends pen, where
others are not able to do so. In addition, since the little boy thinks that he is
the biggest, most probably his friends who owns the pen is too scared to get
his pen back. But in the second stanza, the little boy begins to worry . He

heard that, some people might grow faster than others when they grow up. He
begins to worry that his friend, who he usually bullies will grow faster than
him. Thus, he might not be the biggest and strongest one anymore. Moving
on to the third stanza, this stanza actually support the meaning of the second
stanza. In the second stanza, the little boy mentions that some people might
grow faster than others. So, this means that his friend might be bigger in size
than him, while he might be not so big smaller . As in the last line, the little
boy states that one of the things he worries about is that, his friend will grow
bigger than him and might bully him back. He worries that his friends will
repeat the same thing that he did to him before.

iv) An explanation of how the poem can be read aloud .

The first stanza should be read aloud in a proud and arrogant tone. In
this stanza, the words Im, big, very and because are stressed when
they are read. The word Im refer to the little boy, the one who is
speaking in this poem. Moreover, the phrase youre scared should also
be stressed because this word shows that the little boy emphasizes that
he cant be challenged, and everyone is afraid of him. Hence, this line
should be read in an arrogant tone.
The second stanza will be read aloud in a worry tone. The word But
should be read with rising tone to show that the little boy worries. Moving
on, the words heard, grow, faster, than and others should be also be
read with greater emphasis. This stanza shows that the little boy worries
that when he grown up, he will grow smaller than his friends.
The third stanza uses the similar tone as in the second stanza
because this stanza support the meaning of the previous stanza. The
words means, big and may are stressed because these words are
related to the growth. The phrase not so big is being stressed because
the little boy here is trying to convey that he might grow not so big as
compared to his friend.
As for the final line, the words one and worry are stressed. This is
because one refers to the growing process that the little boy worries
about. The tone of this line is worry.
