Carers Update
The care Act 2014 is a new law being introduced about the care and support people receive:
The act sets out some key responsibilities of Local Authorities:
Assessing Needs:
The Local Authority must assess the needs of people who may need care and support, it should involve the individual, their carers and others who are
interested in their welfare. They must assess the needs of carers who provide care
If assessed needs meet the eligibility criteria then the Local Authority must consider how to met those needs, if they do not meet the eligibility criteria,
the local Authority must provide advice and information on how those needs could be met
For young people in transition to adult care and support , carers of young people or young carers, the Local Authority must assess their needs and tell
them whether some or all of their needs are likely to be met the eligibility criteria when they are 18 and give information and advice on meeting,
reducing or preventing those needs
Tell the person which of their needs can be met using a direct payment
Help the person decide how they are going to have their support needs met
The person may be entitled to have an independent Personal Budget even if the Local Authority is not intending to meet their needs
How the authority will meet some (or all) of their needs
Relevant information about the outcomes that the person/carer wants to achieve and whether the carer wants to work, take part in education , training
or recreation
