Psalm 118
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
4
Let those who fear the LORD say:
His love endures forever.
5
When hard pressed, I cried to the LORD;
he brought me into a spacious place.
6
The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
7
The LORD is with me; he is my helper.
I look in triumph on my enemies.
Can I take a moment to complain? I
really want to complain about complainers. You
know, those people who complain about
absolutely everything. If its raining they
complain that its too wet. If its cloudy they
complain that theres never enough sunlight. If
its warm and sunny they complain that its too
hot and too bright. These are the people that
complain about everything they receive, good or
bad, and seem to never be happy about it.
People who complain can drive me nuts! I dont
like to listen to complainers.
Now if you go back and reread that first
paragraph there are two points that I am making.
The first is that there are times that we become
so focused on the bad or the negative that we
often miss out on the things that we should be
thankful for. The other one is that there is a bit
of irony tied into that first paragraph. Having

me complain about complainers makes me a

complainer also. Its almost like the time that my
friends and I, who were going to NMU at the
time, wanted to go out and picket against
picketing.
God has given us all so much, and there is
a lot to be thankful for, and yet we become
unaware or even blinded to those things so often.
God tells us that we have enough. Our sinful,
selfish self tells us that I need more; that theres
not enough to go around. So we horde what we
do have to keep it all to ourselves. Instead of
being thankful with what weve been given, we
all fall too easily into the trap of complaining that
we simply dont have enough.
Listen to the conversations going on
around you. I havent seen a Psychological study
done on this yet (maybe somewhere in the
future), but it appears that conversations that
involve complaining or controversial issues seem
to appear to go on longer than those that dont
(this may not always be the case, however, there
may be something to this). Think about some of
the conversations you have had and how long
they last. When we talk to others, how often do
we carry on conversation after conversation
focusing on the things we can complain about
other and how short are our conversations usually
around the things we are thankful for?
It is so east to become lost and blinded by
the struggles that we all face in this life that we

forget to see and be thankful for the things that

God has given us. As I said at the start, sin blinds
us from seeing what weve been given and instead
reminds us of what we dont have. This world
and everything in it screams, There is not
enough, and yet Jesus from the cross is crying
out, Im giving you everything that I have.
We will have struggles, we will have
trials, and there are times, that for some of us, this
world will give us more than we can bear,
however, through what Jesus gave up for you on
the cross, through your faith, you will always
have all you will ever need. So may you find in
your faith and in everything that God has done for
you a life to be thankful for.

In Gods Peace, Pastor Dave Johnson

A Prayer for Courage

Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths
as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not
knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
- This prayer comes from the Lutheran Book of Worship (Augsburg, 1978) reprinted 2012 pg. 28
