Section 10 METAL ROOFING SYSTEM WORKS


10.1

STANDARDS OF CONSTRUCTION
Refer to Clause 1.1.1 of section 1- preliminaries, which applies to this section. All materials and
workmanship shall comply with design requirements

10.2

NON-CONFORMANCE WITH STANDARDS


Refer to clause 1.1.2 of section 1- preliminaries, which applies to this section.

10.3

REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE

10.3.1

Approval of Shop drawings and Samples


The Contractor shall submit a complete set of shop drawings for the metal roofing system works
which shall include metal roofing, together with all flashings, fascias, cappings, gutters, sumps,
downpipes, waterproofing, insulation and all accessories and ancillaries, etc complete, all in strict
accordance with the drawings and specification and as a complete metal roofing system and fit for
its purpose. For each assembly, the shop drawings must clearly show in plan, elevation, sections
and all details for Engineers approval.
Samples shall consist of complete units of each type of assembly showing surface finish,
insulation, seals and accessories, and the like. Samples approved by Engineer shall be kept at the
Site & used as the standard of inspection for the remaining installation. Full-scale fabrication
should not commence until Engineer and Employer have approved full-scale samples.

10.3.2

Inspection of the work


The Contractor shall demonstrate that he has checked the installed work before notifying
Engineer to inspect. The method of checking shall be to Engineers satisfaction.
Comply with Engineers inspections to meet requirements for acceptance at the following stages;

Approval workmanship at in-process inspections

Sample room
Amongst other samples, a representative section of the complete roof covering (minimum area
2000 X 2000 mm) shall be installed as prototype of materials and method of application for
approval of the Engineer before the actual works can proceed on site. This shall involve showing
all details including all laps, skirtings, dressings to outlets, etc as will be required for the whole
metal roofing. The Engineer will nominate one room at the project that shall be used to establish
the prototypes. The Contractor shall notify Engineer to attend the work done in the sample room,
and a joint inspection of the work will be made. Engineers acceptance of the samples at the
sample room will be the standard on which subsequent installation is based.

10.3.4

Hand-over documents
Refer to clause 1.1.3 of section 1- preliminaries, which applies to this section. Submit documents
required by The Relevant Authorities in Vietnamese language, and documents required by
Engineer in English language.

10.4

MATERIALS

10.4.1

Whenever a material, item, article or product is specified by trade name, manufacturers name or
catalogue reference, the Contractor may use its equivalent in the Works, if approved by the
Engineer.

10.4.2

METAL DECK ROOFING


Profiled Steel Roofing Sheets
Unless otherwise specified, all profiled metal roofing where shown on the drawings shall be the
Metklip 940, Grade 550, 0.53mm thick or equivalent clip-on system interlock and concealed fixing
type and shall be undertaken by approved roofing sheet manufacturer/ supplier. Metal roofing

sheets shall be in continuous lengths fixed to steel purlins in strict accordance with the approved
roofing sheet manufacturers instructions. The colour shall be for one side and shall be selected
by the Engineer.
Metal roofing sheets shall comply with the following specifications:Material

Zinc/aluminium alloy coated steel complying with AS 1397-G550-AZ150


(550 MP minimum yield strength, base metal thickness and mass of
0.48mm & 5.02kg/m2 and colourbond factory paint finished) for
zinc/aluminium and minimum mass coating of 275gm/m2 for zinc only.

Tolerances

Length: +0, -15mm


Cover width: 2mm

Total Coated Thickness

0.47mm

Metal Flashing And Gutters


The roof shall be completed with all capping, flashing and filling pieces and other accessories as
required to prevent water ingress and as recommended by the manufacturer.
Unless otherwise stated, all accessories shall be of 0.6mm (24 SWG) Colorbond or approved
equivalent iron bent to required shape and profile and fixed as shown or required by
circumstances (such as roof penetration by services).
Unless otherwise stated, Rainwater gutters shall be 1.3mm thick PVC-coated steel sheet bent to
required profile and fixed to steel framing all in accordance with manufacturers specification.
Unless otherwise shown, rainwater heads or sumps of 300mm x 300mm square and generally
150mm deep, with tapered sides, shall be provided where 150mm diameter rainwater downpipe
joins to gutter. All gutters works shall include primed and painted fixing straps and brackets as
required.
Along the junction between rainwater gutter and the metal roofing sheets, a galvanised steel
flashing shall trussed under the metal roof and down into the gutter in continuous sheet ie no
longitudinal lapping is allowed.
Infill blockout piece to prevent water ingress shall be provided between the metal roofing sheets
at ridge and eaves.
Matching Colorbond or equivalent ridge or verge capping shall be provided where required.
Wire mesh shall be approved stainless steel.
Heat Insulation For Metal Roof
Unless otherwise stated,roof heat insulation sheet shall be 100mm thick (density to be approved
by Engineer) Apic brand air bubble insulation with double side reflective aluminium foil or
equivalent with 95 % Radiant Heat Absorption.
The entire surface of the insulation sheets shall be laid to the satisfaction of the Engineer.
The Manufacturers name and/or trade mark shall be indelibly marked and imprinted at interval of
not more than one metre on the insulation sheet.
Fixing Of Metal Roof And Fascia
Unless otherwise stated, the fastener for steel supports shall be approved zinc-coated steel selfdrilling/self-tapping screws:(a)

Fixing straps

No 10 - 24 x 16mm mafer head screws

(b)

Flashing & capping

No 9 - 18 x 25mm screws with neoprene sealing

(c)

Fascia cladding

washers
No 8 - 18 x 12mm per head screws. At least 3
fasteners shall be used per sheet at each support
at the valley of the double rib

10.5

GUARANTEE FOR THE METAL ROOFING SYSTEM


Upon certified completion of the Contract, the Contractor shall furnish the Employer with a 10year guarantee provided by the roofing sheet manufacturer/supplier against leakages, faults in
installation, workmanship, premature deterioration of metal roofing sheets and accessory
materials supplied and installed by them.
The guarantee shall be of the form as shown in the specimen and the manufacturer/supplier shall
undertake to make good all defects during the period of guarantee.
The Employer reserves the right to withhold any payment due to the Contractor until the
Certificate of Guarantee is furnished.

10.6

FINAL INSPECTION AND HAND-OVER


When the metal roofing system works installation is completed and has been agreed to be handed
over, the Contractor shall, at the time of the joint inspection, submit to Engineer the following
documents, certificates, and records of the Works completed;
a.

Copy of approved shop drawings and samples of full-scale assemblies

b.

Copy of in-progress inspection records

c.

Copy of non-conformances and approved corrective action

d.

Copy of 10 year guarantee
