PRSSIET WILKERSOM (Bom Sept. 17, 1798 "

died May I6, 1868)

Presley Son of Williasi,

Irs.t.malsrrcfaiia bom in Boone^jf Fort, Kentucky, later

it

known as Harrod*s Fort and now called Harrodsburg Ky. He was also the first of the

Wllkersons to come to Missouri. KEW says Milton B. told him Presley came into Missouri on
pony, with the seeds for his nursery stock in his saddlebags.

^/hen Presley, with his little family, crossed the river at St. Louis, and Indian Chief
admired his spotted pony and offered many acres of land, on which the city's business
section now stands for the ponj. Presley refused the offfer for the land looked like
useless swamp.

Presley married Bolly Searcey (1805-1879) in 1820; the Searcy family was from Virginia
then went to Kentucky, where Presley and Polly were married. In 1826 Presley and Polly and
their little family came to Missouri, settling near Columbia, Mo. When this move was made

it seems other members of the Searcy family also migrated at same time and place; Lemuel

Searcy, a brother of Polly and family also resided in Boone County; Sister Lucy Searcy
Dooley lived in nearby Florida, Missouri.

It is told that in the spring Presley(or was it Bill, Presleys son?)would go into the
c^ves near fiocheport and Columbia, near the river, and rout out with a burning torch the

hibernating bears. When they would rear to charge him, he would rig their bellies open
with his hunting knife. Bear meat, in early spting, was a real treat.
One occasion, there was an 18 inch snow and the cave contained a bear and iiwo cubs.

Four miles on a narrow ledge west of Florida, above Florida.

Mason Wilkerson and Sally Wilderson TijUy, brother and sister of Presley made their

homes nearby. After fotar years in Boone County, Presley and Polly moved to Montoe County
near Florida, Mo. Where he farmed. Later he lived in Florida where they conducted a store

and aahotel (tavern): it is understood these enterprises were successful for them. Mark
born in this town and the house in which he was bom was later owned by Presley's
daughter, Martha Jane Wilkersoh Goss - Property now in 195 owned by State Park Commission]

OBITUARY

Died, near Santa Fe, Monroe County, Mo., May 16th, 1868

Presley Wilkerson, aged 69 years, 7 months and 29 days.

Deceased was an early settler in Missouri.

In 1826 he moved

from Clark County, Ky., to Boone Cooounty, Missouri. In 1828

he united with the Baptist Church at Rocky Fork,*'and was
baptized by Elder Peyton Stevens.
In 1830 he removed to the
Eastern paart of Monroe County, then a wilderness, now a
densely populated county.

His house in those early days was the favorite resort of

the traveler and the. drover.

His table was always bountiful

ly supplied by his thrifty companion with the luscious fruits

of his early orchard and his fields, venison and honey also

abounded in those days. Here also the heralds of the cross

were wont to appear from month to month to proclaim the
riches of God's grace, and many were the trophies of the allprevailing power of God in calling sinners to repentance,

through the auspicious ministry of Brethern Woods, Hurley and

others.

Elder A. C. Goodrich was a happy convert at one of

those meetings, and he can testify to the goodness of God in

saving sinners.

But the rude hands of disease were laid

heavily upon the subject of this brief memoir, torturing him

with indescribable pain through many years, and depriving him
of the pleasure, of co-operating in' the active work of the
church; but his mind was remarkably clear and his faith
unshaken. He was not aftaid to die, therefore his kindred

and friends who mourn his loss, feel assured that his body

awaits the glad summons to new life, and his spirit now in
Paradise, will unite with it and live forever.

Oh, who would live always, away from his God;

Away from yon heaven, that blissful abode.

Where rivers of pleasure flow o'er the bright plains.

And the noontide of glory eternally reigns.

are the parents of Edward C., Grace and Mary Martha, all at home.
Their third child, Mabel, is deceased.
Wilkerson.

The fundamental gauge of a man's success

is not entirely his material prosperity, for he may become wealthy,

and through his properties wield a certain amount of influence, and

yet be accounted among the failures if, with this increase he has
not at the same time gained and held the respect of his associates.
When he is able to accomplish both, then, indeed, may he be ac
counted a successful man, and entitled to look back with pride

_upon his years of endeavor. H. H. Wilkerson of Waynesville,

belongs to the latter class. For many years he worked early and
late not only to develop and improve his farm, but also to do his
full duty as a man and a citizen, and Warren county owes much to
him. He was born in Washington township, Warren county, O.,
in 1856, a son of James and Mahala (McDonald) Wilkerson, na
tives of Kentuck)'^ and Virginia, respectively. Coming to Warren
county, O., in 1808, they located in Washington township, buying
342 acres of wild land in the Spring Hill community. In the years
that followed James Wilkerson, and later his son, H. H. Wilker
son, worked hard to clear the land and make proper improvements.
From boyhood H. H. Wilkerson was required to do a man's work
on the farm, and by the time he was twenty-one years old he was
operating it on his own account. During his boyhood, as oppor
tunity offered, he attended the district schools, but learned more
from experience than from books, and is now a very well-informed
man. Mr. Wilkerson continued to operate his farm, gradually in
troducing improvements in his methods and equipment, until his
farm is now a model one for the neighborhood, when in 1913 he
retired from active labor, and moved to Waynesville. He rented
his farm, but still takes an interest in live stock operations. During
the time he was on the farm he specialized in breeding and raising
registered Jersey cattle, holding two large sales in the previous
years, and one very recently. He also raised seed corn extensively,
and in all of his operations showed a progressive spirit which
sought the best methods and did not begrudge expenditures for
improved machinery. The beautiful family residence at Waynes
ville was purchased by him at the time of his exodus from the
farm.

Mr. Wilkerson was married in 1883 to Miss Susan Smith,

a daughter of Cyrus Smith and his wife Phoebe Ann (Graham)

Smith, both of whom were born in Warren county. Mr. and Mrs.
Wilkerson have three children, namely: James Albert, who is a
resident of Dayton, O.; Nellie M., who is the wife of Lestor Gordon
of Waynesville; and Lillian Lucile, who is attending Miami Jacobs
Business college of Dayton, O., with a view of fitting herself for a
commercial career. In politics Mr. Wilkerson is a staunch Re;
publican, but aside from being on the school board, he has not held
public office, but some idea of the esteem in which his associates

held him is evidenced by the fact that he was made treasurer of the
board. The Methodist Episcopal church holds his membership,

and receives his hearty and generous support. Not only is Mr.
Wilkerson active in promoting various movements in the church,
but he is equally interested in civic affairs, and no one man of

MEMOIRS OF THE MIAMI VALLEY

Waynesville has accomplished more as a private citizen, in bring

ing about those improvements which must be inaugurated and car

ried to a successful completion if a community hopes to be ranked
among the modern ones of the day. Never seeking undue credit,

Mr. Wilkerson has quietly pursued his life work, and has given to

his community and associates more than he has received.

colony of Springboro was augmented by the arn^TO^alter Scott

Wilkerson, whose activities had been centered in Warren county

for some years, and whose career is expressive of the possibilities

of country life when directed by a well-trained mind, an earnest
purpose and a keen appreciation of its benefits and prerogatives.
Mr. \Vilkerson repi^sents a widely known family in this part of the

Miami valley, and one whose members have been men of worth
and reliability in the various occupations and callings of life. He

was born on a farm in Washington township, Warren county, O.

in 1855, a son of James H. and Sarah A. Wilkerson. The family

has been represented in Warren county since the year 1802, when
the paternal grandfather of Mr. Wilkerson, John Wilkerson, drove
overland with his family from his native place of Boonsboro, Ky.,

and settled in the eastern part of the county. There he became

a farmer ofsorne pretensions, accumulating a large tract of land, and

rounded out his career in the pursuits of agriculture. He was one

of the real pioneers of his locality and a member of the sturdy crew

who assisted jn the original development of various parts of the

great and fertile valley of the Miami. On the pioneer farm settled
by his father during the early days, James H. Wilkerson was born

in 1816. He was brought up in the midst of pioneer surroundings,

and early learned the meaning of hard work and the value of indus

try, and when he came to his majority was well trained in body

and mind to carry on the same kind of labor to which his father

had devoted his life. His career was spent entirely in the tilling

of the soil, and his industry and able management of his affairs
enabled him to become a leading farmer of his locality. He died

in June, 1905, highly respected in the locality, and Mrs. Wilkerson,

also a native of M^arren county, born in 1820, passed away durinc^
the same year. Walter Scott Wilkerson grew up on his father's

farm and received his education in the public schools of Washing

ton township. In 1883 he left the parental roof and went to Macou-

pin county, 111., where he engaged in farming on his own account,

and, meeting with some success, remained in that locality until 1902.

In that year he returned to the county of his birth and bought a

farm near Springboro. on which he continued to carry on opera

tions until the fall of 1917. At that time he disposed of his interests

and removed to Springboro, where he has since lived in comfortable

retirement. Mr. Wilkinson represents the substantial and reliable
element of the town, county and region, and his life affords an ex

ample of moderation, thrift and public-spiritedness. He is a direc

tor of the Farmers Bank of Springboro, and in business and financial

circles his nartie is synonymous with integrity and absolute fidelity.

He is a Republican, but politics has had but an indifferent part in

his life. In 1887 Mr. Wilkerson was married to Miss Annie J.

the age of four years and settled at or near Springboro, where the
remainder of his life was passed.

J. iT^Wills, whose agricultural successes in Clear Creek town

ship entitle him to a place among the leading farmers of Warren

county, comes of one of the old families of this county, whose mem
bers have always been held in high esteem by their associates. J. B.
Wills was born in Clear Creek township, in 1850, a son of David

and Sarah (Speight) Wills, and grandson of James Wills. _David

AVills was born and reared in Warren county, and his wife was

a native of Pennsylvania. During his boyhood, J. B. Wills attended

the local schools of his district, and those of Utica, Ohio, and at the

same time learned the rudiments of farming. When he attained

his majority, he began farming on his own account, and now owns

a finely developed'farm in his native township, where he carries

on general farming and raises a good grade of stock. In 1870 oc
curred the marriage of Mr. Wills and Miss Mary F. Crane, a daugh

ter of Joseph and Rebecca Crane. Mr. and Mrs. Wills have four

children, namely: Mattie M.. David Lester, Joseph Walter and

Harley E. Politically Mr. Wills is a Republican, and he has served
as township trustee for several years, to the entire satisfaction of
his constituents. Thoroughly imbued with the welfare of his home
town Mr. Wills is building, at his own "expense, a community house

40 by 70 feet to cost about $5,000. The beliefs of the Universalists

accord with his own, and he is a supporter of that organization in

his neighborhood. A man of high principles, he has endeavored to

live up to them, and to give to everyone the same square deal he
asks from them, and his standing is deservedly high.

Jacob C. Wilson. Both business affairs and the agricultural

industry have received impetus in Warren county through the op
erations and activities of Jacob C. Wilson, the proprietor^ of 125

acres of well-improved land in Union township and one of his com

munity's most energetic and enterprising citizens. Mr. Wilson was
born in 1876, in Newcastle county, Del., a son of William an'd Anna

(Chandler) Wilson, and a grandson of James Wilson, the patentee"

of an improved powder keg. In 1880 James Wilson, with his own
family and that of his son, William, came to Ohio and settled at'
South Lebanon, where father and son engaged in the manufacture
of this product. They built up a good business and continued there
in all their lives, William Wilson surviving his_ father some years
and passing away in January, 1911. The business is still being
conducted in the family name, the proprietor being John W. Wilson,
an uncle of Jacob C. Wilson, at Kings Mills. Jacob C. Wilson was
but four years of age when brought to Ohio, and here received his
education in the public schools. As a lad he worked in the factory
of his father, in manufacturing powder kegs, and in connection with
this enterprise founded and built up a good general store business,
of which he was the proprietor for several 3''ears. Eventuall}^ he
disposed of his interest in the latter and invested his capital in a
canning business. While the direction of this plant is in other
