Letter from the Rabbi

SHANA
TOVA!
Recent events in Israel have taught us that the Jewish
nations greatest strength is her unity. This past year we
witnessed the unprecedented power of collective Jewish
prayer, as Jews of all stripes poured out their hearts at the
Kotel. Our brethren throughout the diaspora joined rank
in solidarity, dedicating their tefillot and tzedaka in support
of our holy soldiers and the citizens of the Jewish State.
It was in that critical hour that we were privileged to see
Am Yisrael in its finest and most noble form. Even locally
there was a palpable sense of mission and moral clarity,
as petty differences were brushed aside making room for
that which was most central. This years mission must be to
continue achieving heights in achdut, even in the aftermath
of the crisis.
In truth, achdut is not just a social ideal but it is also an
essential element in developing a relationship with the
Torah. Our sacred Torah was given to us only as we stood
all-together at the base of Mt. Sinai. Henceforth, unity
became the necessary precondition for kabalat haTorah.
We are only able to teach, learn, and grow spiritually if we
do so as a whole.

We are only able to teach,

learn, and grow spiritually if
we do so as a whole.
Rav Kook teaches us that Torah which is not inclusive of the
klal, the entirety of Am Yisrael, is incomplete.
As such, we dedicate this year of Torah study to the klal. Torah
study this year at our shul must and will transcend the individual. Pray with a tzibur. Grow with a tzibur. Dont just attend a
shiur, bring a friend, consider partaking in our chavrusa program, make new friends at our Beer Torah Oneg or Meet and
Eat Luncheon.
In reviewing this issue of KCTs educational offerings, I trust
you will discover your rightful place at the foot of the mountain
alongside your friends at KCT - KIsh Echad Blev Echad.
Byedidut,
Rabbi Shaanan Gelman

JOIN THe

FAMILY
Shalom uBracha,
You hold in your hand a guide, not just to the programming for 5775, but to what unites KCT as a community
and, more so, as a family.

...at the heart and soul of our

family is our value for Torah
learning and Torah living.

Like any family, ours begins with our children. Since moving into our new facility we have seen tremendous growth
in our youth programming, both in the number of children
participating, as well as the quantity and quality of the
programs themselves.

Beit midrash is filled with the sound of teens and adults studying along with members of the Yu Torah mitzion Kollel. On
Shabbat afternoon we offer a Bar mitzvah class, a Gemarah
Cavurah and a Womens Parsha Shiur. and if you ip through
these pages you will find that this isnt even half of learning opportunities that KCT offers.

Our family enjoys a good time, and that is why our calendar is filled with fun and social outings, from our annual
Shul dinner to the 5K Run, and all five movies in between.

This year find three or four (or more) offerings in this guide
that you like. Circle them. Write them on your calendar. Set a
reminder in your phone. Come and become part of the family.

Finally, at the heart and soul of our family is our value for
Torah learning and Torah living. Not a day passes without
Torah being studied in our shul. On Thursday nights our

Wishing you a wonderful year,

Rabbi Etan Ehrenfeld

Mystic in a Time of

IN A TIME OF
REVOLUTION

av abraham isaac Kook (18651935)

was one of the most inuentialand controversialrabbis of the twentieth century.
a visionary writer and outstanding rabbinic
leader, Kook was a philosopher, mystic, poet,
jurist, communal leader, and veritable saint.
The first chief rabbi of Jewish Palestine and
the founding theologian of religious Zionism,
he struggled to understand and shape his
revolutionary times. His life and writings
resonate with the defining tensions of Jewish
life and thought.
a powerfully original thinker, Rav Kook combined strict traditionalism and an embrace
of modernity, Orthodoxy and tolerance,
piety and audacity, scholasticism and ecstasy,
and passionate nationalism with profound
universalism. Though little known in the
English-speaking world, his life and teachings
are essential to understanding current israeli
politics, contemporary Jewish spirituality, and
modern Jewish thought. This biography, the
first in English in more than half a century,
offers a rich and insightful portrait of the
man and his complex legacy. Yehudah mirsky
clears away widespread misunderstandings
of Kooks ideas and provides fresh insights
into his personality and worldview. mirsky
demonstrates how Kooks richly erudite,

dazzlingly poetic writings convey a breathtaking vision in which the old will become new,
and the new will become holy.
Yehudah mirsky is associate Professor of the
Practice of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and the Schusterman Center for israel
Studies at Brandeis university. He served in
the u.S. State departments human rights
bureau, lived in israel for the past decade,
and has contributed to the New Republic, the
Economist, and many other publications.
We are honored to have Yehuda mirsky as
one of our visiting scholars. He will spend a
Shabbat with us at KCT on may 8-9, 2015.

Excellent. . . . Neither current israeli politics
nor contemporary Jewish spirituality can be
accurately understood without addressing

along with an explanation of his religious

Yehudah mirskys superb new biography of
the great 20th century Jewish philosopher
and mystic is a huge achievement. He gives

It is No Dream: the Life of Theodor Herzl (2012)

November 15, 2014 VVV

It Is No Dream: The Life of Theodor Herzl, explores the life and times of Theodor Herzl, father of
the modern state of Israel. Narrated by Academy
Award-winner, Sir Ben Kingsley and starring Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz as the voice
of Theodor Herzl. The film examines how Herzl, a
well-known journalist and playwright, an assimilated,
Budapest-born Jew, horrified by the Dreyfus trial in
Paris and the anti-Semitism he saw spreading across
Europe, took upon himself the task of attempting to
create a Jewish homeland in Palestine against all odds.

December 20, 2014 VVV1/2

Sir Martin Gilbert, historical consultant for the film

and Churchills official biographer, adds that had
Churchills warnings about Nazi Germanys racial policies towards Jews been heeded in the early 1930s,
the Holocaust may never have occurred.
The film examines why Winston Churchills legacy
continues to be relevant in the 21stCentury and
explores why his leadership remains inspirational to
current day political leaders and diplomats.

Lonely Man of Faith (2006)

February 21, 2015 VVVV
Lonely Man of Faith is a new documentary film on
the life and legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik,
the intellectual leader of Modern Orthodox Judaism in 20th Century America. Throughout his life, in
Europe, New York and Boston, he struggled to forge
a path between Jewish tradition and the modern age,
an ordeal that frequently resulted in loneliness. His
impact was tremendous but his legacy was fairly
complicated.

VVV1/2

Against the Tide addresses the attitudes of President

Roosevelt and his senior advisors, who used the pretext of winning the war against the Nazis to block any
Jewish immigration to the U.S. and juxtaposes the
events in America with heart-wrenching heroic stories
of the doomed Jews of Europe and the leaders of Polish Jewry who had faith that their powerful brothers
and sisters in the United States would somehow be
able to save them.

Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny (2010)

Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny, focuses on
the years 1940 and 1941, when the Swastika flew
over continental Europe. Only England with her back
to the wall, under WinstonChurchill, remained defiant.
Walking With Destinyhighlights Churchills years in
the political wilderness, his early opposition to Adolf
Hitler and Nazism, and his support for Jews under
threat by the Nazi regime. As historian John Lukacs
explains, Churchill may not have won the War in
1940, but without him, the War most certainly would
have been lost.

The Story of America during the Holocaust

Against the Tide is a compelling film that documents
what happened in the United States during the
Holocaust, highlighting how a young activist, Peter
Bergson, challenged Washington and the establishment Jewish organizations to demand that the rescue
of Europes Jews become a top priority for American
Jews. Through a never before seen 1977 interview,
Bergson gives a first-hand account of what occurred.
The more successful he became in attracting support
from important non-Jewish members of Congress and
Hollywood personalities such as Ben Hecht, Edward
G. Robinson and Paul Muni, the more threatened and
resentful Jewish establishment leaders became. Only
the ultra Orthodox Vaad Hatzala, led by Rabbis Aaron
Kotler and Eliezer Silver worked with him.

Over the span ofeight years, Herzl organized and led

a worldwide political movement that withinfifty years
led to the establishment of the state of Israel. The film
follows Herzl as he meets with Kings, Prime Ministers, Ambassadors, a Sultan, a Pope and government
ministers from Constantinople to St. Petersburg, from
Paris to Berlin, from Vienna to Vilna in his quest to
build a Jewish nation.

Unlikely Heroes (2003)

Tisha Baav, July 26, 2015 VVVV
Narrated by Academy Award-winner Sir Ben Kingsley, Unlikely Heroes chronicles the yet untold stories
of Jewish resistance and individual heroism throughout the Nazi Holocaust. The film utilizes rare film and
photos discovered in archives across Europe, and
enhanced by weeks of newly filmed sequences in
the locations where many of these stories actually
occurred.
For most people, the idea of Jewish resistance or
defiance during the Holocaust is limited to the heroism of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and a few isolated
acts throughout World War II. Contrary to the view of
some that Jews caught in the terror of Hitlers Europe
were passive, Moriah Films latest documentary feature presents previously unknown stories of extraordinary men and women who exemplified the highest
level of courage and human dignity during the most
desperate days of the Holocaust.
Unlikely Heroes highlights seven extraordinary people
whose unique and inspiring stories will add a new
chapter to the story of Jewish resistance:
Pinchas Rosenbaum - a rabbis son who saw his
entire family perish and then joined the underground
to rescue Jews.
Willy Perl - an Austrian Jew who, in 1938, defied SS
Second Lieutenant Adolf Eichmann by going over his
head to his superiors in Berlin with a fantastic scheme
to allow Jews to go to Palestine illegally.
Friedl Dicker Brandeis - the artist who shared her

16
l

gift with the children of Theresienstadt and taught them to

express their pain through art.
Leon Kahn who, after witnessing his sister and fathers
murder and then almost his entire village by the Nazis entire
village by Lithuanian collaborators, he went on to join the
partisans in the forests of Poland, Russia and Lithuania.
Robert Clary the well-known actor who, following the Nazi
occupation of his native France, was deported to several
concentration camps.
Recha Sternbuch - a devoutly Orthodox Jew, the daughter
of a rabbi, living in neutral Switzerland who led a rescue
effort that brought hundreds of refugees to her small town
and who sheltered thirty people in her own home.
Anna Heilman - Along with one of her sisters and her parents, Anna Heilman was deported to Auschwitz and became
part of a plot to steal gunpowder that eventually led to the
destruction of Birkenaus infamous Crematorium #4.

BaR/BaT miTZVaH CLaSSES

Mazal Tov on your upcoming bar/bat mitzvah! Preparations can be both exciting and overwhelming. No one bar/
bat mitzvah looks the same. In addition to our bar mitzvah
class, youth learning on Shabbat morning and youth minyan,
you may wish your child to have focused learning time with
a mentor. Typically children will spend a number of sessions with one of our rabbis or a teacher to study a portion
of Torah, a topic of interest, or partake in a chesed project.
Rabbi Gelman is available to work with you and your child to
develop a meaningful and inspirational curriculum custom
tailored to meet their interests and needs. Often children will
use the study time as an opportunity to prepare a dvar Torah
to be delivered at the simcha. Remember, the earlier lessons
begin, the less pressure there will be on your child as the date
approaches. Contact Rabbi Gelman to schedule.

shkenazi-style cholent was first mentioned in 1180,

in the writings of Rabbi Yitzhak of Vienna. In the shtetls of

Europe, religious neighborhoods in Jerusalem and other
cities in Israel before the advent of electricity and cooking
gas, a pot with the assembled but uncooked ingredients was

by to pick up their cooked cholent on Saturday mornings.

The same practice was observed in Morocco, where black
pots of shina placed overnight in bakers ovens and then
delivered by bakers assistants to households on Shabbat
morning. The unique cooking requirements of cholent were
the inspiration for the invention of the slow cooker.
