BOB & DAWN BAIRD

Elizabeth, Rachel & Joshua

JUNE 1981

BAIRDS TO JUNGLE CAMP IN

JULY OF '82
Our oldest daughter, Elizabeth, is in Special Education and
has the opportunity to go to the State Wide Special Olympics.
She really wants to go! To be able to she must accomplish

certain things. First of all she must prepare thru training. Every
week, twice a week, she participates in group practices. She
also must practice at home. She must participate in area
preliminaries. She must go to and get a gold medal at the Four
County Olympics held at Augustana College. Then, after all
this, she CAN. not just want, but CAN go to the State Wide
Olympics.
We want to be in New Guinea Jungle Camp in July of '82. But
just like Elizabeth, in order to fulfill our desires we must work
our way thru the preliminaries. These are the preliminaries:

1) Raise required monthly support by December of '81.

2) Purchase of all items necessary to live and work in PNG
by December of '81.

3) Raise funds for airlines tickets and bond insurance by

January of '82.

4) Pack and ship drums to Catifornia for transport to PNG by January of '82.
5) Apply for visa and bond insurance by February of '82.
6) Request malaria pills,
apply for registration forms,
and make more definite plans for departure by February of '82.
7) Apply for Australian visa in March of '82.
8) Depart for PNG in April of '82.

James says, "Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city,
spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will
happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then
vanishes, instead you ought to say, 'If it Is the Lord's will we will live and do this orthat.'" We
have asked this question and the answer has been, YES! Yes, the Lord wants us to fill this

urgent need for Support Teams in the work of Bible Translation. Yes! Therefore we must push
on to reach the goal which he has placed before us.

If God is for us, then what can stand against us? Join us in these months to come, in your
prayers. Let us watch together as God most certainly accomplishes His will for the needs of
Pioneer Bible Translators.

Elizabeth

Dawn

Joshua

Rachel

SUPPORTING THE

SUPPORT TEAM
The Support Team working in New Guinea is the living
link of the Translation Team. All that is necessary to keep
the Translation Team at work in the Tribal Language is
supplied by the Support Team. There is another
Team at work in Pioneer Bible Translators, these
people are the Forwarding Agents. The Forward
ing Agent Is the vital link between you, and the
Missionary Teams on the field. They are the
ones who handle all the finances, which

includes taxes, insurances, retirement,

travel fund, bill paying and the monthly
transfer of funds from Stateside to the

field. They are the ones who know

what the missionary teams are doing,
what they need, where they are and

they have the responsitjility of

making this information known.
More than this, they know person
ally the people they are support
ing, they agree with the Commission
that put the Missionaries on the field,
and are in fact doing a necessary part
toward fulfilling that Commission.
We would like to take this opportunity to
introduce to you our Forwarding Agents, Rog
and Bev Vickroy. The Vickroys are active members
of the Christian Church in Rapids City, Illinois, where

Rog is an Elder and Bev is the organist. They have three daughters and three grandchildren.
Bev works for the Federal Government as a secretary at the Rock Island Arsenal and Rog is
employed in Industrial Engineering at John Deere.

The Vickroys are very qualified to handle the physical aspects of being our Forwarding
Agents just from their own business experience. They are also qualified because of their
Spiritual maturity coupled with their desire to help us to accomplish what God has laid out

before us. On top of all this they bring to the job the experience of being Missionaries
themselves. The Vickroys served in South Africa from February 1967 to September 1973,
working in the Johannesburg metropolitan area with the non-whites.

We have introduced you tothe Vickroys so that you might begin to pray for them as you have
for us. Wewant you to knowof their vital part of the ministrywhich God has given to us. Please
pray for them to have the wisdom and endurance they need to complete this task.

CHANGES
Life is characterized by growth and growth is
characterized by change. Our son Joshua is 20
months old and this whole part of his life has been
characterized by phenomenal change. Jesus said that
we are growing branches on His supporting and
supplying vine. He said that we are to grow and
change under the Vinedresser's hand until we are
bearing all the fruit we can. Paul sees our growth
together in the Church as that which will change us
into a Holy Temple where God will dwell. Peter says
that we grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord, and
through this growth we change and become like Him;
we share in the Divine Nature. Growth and Change!
Change comes also because of outside influences
as opposed to the process of growth. Peter came to the

conclusion that he should refrain from taking the

Gospel to the Gentiles. But God sent Peter a vision of
unclean animals that were made clean, God sent Peter

to the Gentiles to preach the Gospel, God sent the Holy

Spirit on the Gentiles in Peter's sight, and Peter
changed his mind.
Paul, being an experienced
missionary, knew that Asia was the place to go, but
God stopped him. If not Asia, then Bithynia is the place
to go, but again he was stopped by Jesus. Then in
Troas God sent him a vision and Paul changed his
mind about where he should go. In each case the
change brought growth. Change and Growth.

As you have already noticed the format of our Newsletter has changed, but this is the result
of a much larger change. In May of this yearwe attended the Pioneer board meeting in Joplin,
Missouri. During the meeting we met Ed and Brenda Buell who are with African Christian
Mission in Zaire, Africa. They were attending the meeting to report on the Huddlestons, our
PBT translation team in Zaire. That report said that the Huddlestons are in critical need of a

support team, and none are going. As a result of that report, we -- the Bairds -- are going to
Zaire. Africa instead of Papua New Guinea. This change first of all changes the direction we
are going by 180 degrees. As a result of this change we now know why it has taken us so long
to finish raising support. We will have more responsibilities in preaching and teaching and
God held us back to get that experience. The Huddlestons needed to be there and the Buells
needed to be home on furlough. This change means we go in January instead of April.
At a time like this when a whole new horizon has been opened up to us by God, we want to
thank you for your support of us. God answered all our prayers, maybe not as we expected,
but answered them all. Thank you for praying for us and with us. You have also been faithful In
financial support even as the time stretched out. Thank you for all this and we pray that you all
remain with us until the job is done.

NEW FINANCIAL NEEDS

House
4 Wheel Drive Vehicle

8,000.00
15,000.00

Refrigerator

600.00

Stove

600.00

Generator 3000+ Watts

800.00

$25,000.00
These items have been recommended to us by the people of African Christian Mission. The

first item and the last three of course all have to do with having a place to live. Our intention is
to have a comfortable place to live so that we are able to keep at our job. The 4 Wheel Drive
Vehicle of course has to do with the actual job laid out before us. In Africa it costs $170 an hour
to use a plane. The Huddlestons receive one five hour flight every three months because of
this expense. This means that they receive their mail and supplies only once in three months.
We will be using the vehicle both to support them and to set up preaching and teaching points,
to train African Christians. These vehicles are much too expensive to buy in Africa, so we buy
them here {$10,000 + $1,000 in parts) and ship them over ($4,000).
If you looked at this list and its total and felt a shock, then you reacted the same way I did. But
it came to my mind about all the VBS programs I have been to -- hundreds of little children
bringing pennies, and dimes, and quarters. Each individual offering seems so small, but each
year thousands of dollars are raised for missions from those seemingly small offerings. This
is one reason why we are in the Church, to put our littleness togetherso we can serve God in a
big way. Would you help us to obtain these things we need to serve God's purpose for us in
Zaire, Africa?
