Dont alienate Muslims, govt told

The government has been told to end the
policy of alienating Muslims and instead
engage the community in matters touching
on national security.
The leader of the majority in the National
Assembly Aden Duale said a closer working relationship with the religious and political leadership will produce better results
in addressing issues of concerns touching
on the community.
It is important to involve the Muslim leadership in matters concerning our youth,
mosques and madaaris as this will bring
about better results, he said in an apparent reference to sentiments from senior
security officials to profile Muslim institutions.
Duale made the remarks at the weekend
during the ground breaking event for the
construction of the Adams Mosque and Is-

lamic Centre along Nairobis Ngong Road.

He categorically called on the interior cabinet
secretary Joseph Ole Lenku and the inspector general of police David Kimaiyo to work together with the Muslim leadership in addressing
security issues adding that a concerted effort is
what is required rather than alienation and collective punishment against the community.
His call follows comments from the CID director
Ndegwa Muhoro and the Police Commissioner
David Kimaiyo who threatened to clamp down
mosques and madaaris which he claimed were
involved in radicalization activities.
Reacting to the state of insecurity in the country, the Garissa Township Member of Parliament went on to condemn the killing of 21 police
officers by bandits in Kapedo Turkana County
and the Sunday attacks by armed gang men on
Nyali Military Barracks and Administration Police camp in Mombasa and Malindi respectively.

The majority leader questioned why

police officers were being massacred
by bandits yet the national government
continues to invest heavily in the security of the country. He noted that those
at the helm of the security docket owe
Kenyans an explanation stressing that
top security officials should find a lasting solution to the state of insecurity
before things get out of control. The
intelligence and the police must tell us
what is going on, added Duale.
Speaking at the event, a prominent
Nairobi scholar Sheikh Dr. Muhammad Osman called on Muslims to pool
their few resources and support the
construction of Islamic religious institutions such as mosques, madaaris,
educational centers and other community oriented development projects
to improve on the lives of Muslims in
the country.
Expressing the same sentiments,

Concerns have been raised over the

continued killings and disappearances
of Muslims personalities especially in
the Coast region.
The latest victim is Sheikh Salim Bakari
Mwarangi who was gunned down outside Masjid Bilal in Likoni in Mombasa
by unknown assailants who escaped
on a motorcycle. The Sheikh met his
death while going to the Mosque for
the Isha (night) prayers after being
shot by the assailants who escaped on
a motorcycle.
While condemning the assassination,
the Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid described the continued
killings of Muslim leaders, Imams,
preachers, and village elders and
youth as deeply disturbing and called
upon the government and the security
apparatus to stop the senseless killings. This brings the number of those
killed in the last two weeks to nine.
The government must address these

Strategies needed to end the senseless killings

Yet another macabre killing of an Imam
has taken place in Mombasa increasing
concerns about the spate of the unresolved murders.
Sheikh Salim Bakari Mwarangi the Imam
of Bilal Ibn Rabah mosque joins a growing list of Muslim personalities whose life
have been cut shot through unexplained
killings which have in recent years gripped
the Coast region.
Sheikh Salims killers did not even have
an iota of respect for the sacred month of
Muharram, the first month in the Islamic
calendar where conflict and wars are expressly prohibited.
Since 2012, more than 40 people who include Imams, Islamic preachers, activists,
businessmen and village elders have lost
their lives or mysteriously disappeared after being kidnapped by unknown people.
These sad episodes often come with assurances from the government that it is
vigorously pursuing those responsible for
such crimes but to date not a single person has been arrested or convicted for
these senseless killings.
The mysterious killings and disappearances of individuals continue to send
chilling reminders about the security and
safety of many Muslims. The killings have
instilled fear among Imams and preachers as well as activists who perceive that
they could be eliminated due to their activities, thoughts or ideology.
For some, the mosque which is supposed
to be a place where the faithful seek spiritual solace and inner peace, is suddenly
becoming a dangerous place as the fear
of someone lurking in wait around the

mosque to take their lives encompasses

their mind.
In many of the killings, fingers have been
pointing to the police as well as the socalled radical youth who are said to vent
their anger on those opposing their teachings.
At the end of the day, whoever is responsible harbours one main reason-to foment
conflict among Muslims and at a wider
scale create inter faith conflicts among
Kenyas diverse faith communities.
Muslims and the nation in general have all
been seeking answers to these mysterious
killings and disappearances but the response have been inadequate. The probe
organized in the aftermath of the murder
of Sheikh Aboud Rogo only elicited more
questions than answers.
It is not enough for the Muslim leadership
to come and condemn these killings. In the
last two years, loud condemnations have
been made but the outbursts have done
little to stem the unresolved murders and
disappearances. While the State has the
machinery to provide some of the answers
to these lingering questions, it will be a long
wait if we expect some credible response
from the government.
It is not a secret that the underlying factor behind these challenges is related to
the so-called radicalization of youth and
the subsequent State response. What is
needed is to develop appropriate strategies to address this problem. This current
state of affairs has to be changed and ways
of constructive engagements should be explored to address the issues of concern on
all sides.

Without having a genuine and sincere

discussion on this matter, the public will
continue to be treated to sensationalized
read news headlines about the murder
of Imams and preachers while the oft repeated cycle of condemnation from the
Muslim leadership will persist.
At the same time, overzealous youth will
continue taking over mosques while the
police on their part will not relent on their
threats to clamp down on mosques and
madaaris and perhaps-may Allah forbidcarry out another Masjid Musa like raid.
Extremist trends emanating from some
youth such as disrespecting Muslim
scholars and condemning those who
dont agree with their ideology and state
security operations such as extra judicial
killings are unacceptable and do not augur well for the wellbeing of the society.
It is time to shed the image of the proverbial ostrich and stop hiding heads in
the sand expecting that the problem will
disappear away in thin air and seek ways
to tame these dangerous culture which is
only helping to create orphans and widows and also helping to sow dangerous
seeds of discord within the community as
well threatening the glue which binds the
diverse Kenyan faith communities.
This is a national problem which calls for
concerted efforts of engagement from the
government, the Muslim leadership, civil
society organizations and the youth to
address this problem as its effects have
a negative bearing on the wider socialeconomic and political landscape of the
country.

The significance of the Hijrah

Hijrah kindled the light of hope in the hearts

of the early Muslims who set a shining example for all Muslims, in every generation,
to emulate. Allah says in the Quran: {Those
who believe, and have emigrated, and have
struggled in the way of Allah with their possessions and their lives are greater in degree with Allah; and those, they are the
triumphant. Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and beatitude; for
them shall be gardens wherein is enduring
bliss, therein they shall abide forever. Surely
with Allah is a tremendous reward.} (At-Tawbah 9: 20-2)
The significance of hijrah (the migration of
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
to Madinah) is not limited to the Islamic history or to the Muslims. The hijrah not only
reshaped - socially and politically - the Arab
Peninsula, but also had its impact on worldwide civilizations. Throughout the history of
Islam, the migration was a transitional line
between the two major eras, regarding to
the message of Islam; the era of Makkah
and the era of Madinah. In its essence, this
signified a transition from one phase to another, as follows:
- Transition from the position of weakness,
where the non-believers of Makkah - particularly the people of Quraysh- humiliated,
tortured and killed Muslims, to the position
of strength. This is where Muslims were allowed to defend themselves and were able
to defeat their adversaries.
- Transition from spreading Islam through
individual Da'wah (inviting others to Islam)
to the spreading of Islam through institutionalized Da'wah, initiated by the state.
- Transition from a position where Muslims
represented a small group of people, surrounded by enemies and threatened by
death, to the position of a regional power
with a strong central leadership. This was
one that was surrounded by a large number
of followers and allies.
- Transition of Da'wah from regionalism, in
which the focus was only on Quraysh and
the tribes surrounding Makkah, to the phase
of universalism. This is where the Muslim
State began reaching out to Persia, Egypt,
and the Byzantine Empire.
SUNDAY LECTURE
- Transition from being a simple Islamic
group of believers, to being the Islamic nation. This was an organized Islamic state,
with a central leadership and other organizations.
- Transition, which is most significantly for
early Muslims, to the phase in which Islam
was not only the act of worship, but a way
of life. This was encompassing (surrounding) politics, economy, social interactions
and every other aspect of life. This was the
first time when Islam was looked upon as a
comprehensive religion.
This contrast between the two periods is
clearly noticeable in the Quranic discourse.
Muslim scholars describe the part of Quran
that was revealed in Makkah as the Makkan
Quran, and that which was revealed in Madinah as the Madini Quran.
Although both parts are intermingled in the

Quran and constitute one divine script, the

discourse of both parts is clearly distinguishable. Whereas the part revealed in Makkah
concentrated on Tawheed (the Oneness of
Allah/monotheism), the part revealed in Madinah covered rules regarding Islamic life in
general. There is no doubt whatsoever that
the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace
be upon him) to Madinah was the crucial
event, which established the Islamic civilization. This was a civilization that thrived for
many centuries.
Hijrah, the turning point in Islamic History
Hijrah (Immigration to Madinah), no doubt,
kindled the light of hope in the hearts of the
early Muslims who set a shining example for
all Muslims, in every generation, to emulate.
Hijrah, in essence, is a process of transfer
to a better situation. It is not meant to find
a comfortable place where one would relax
and stop endeavor (attempt). Rather, it is a
search for an environment more favorable
to continuous and constructive effort. Immediately after reaching Madinah, the Prophet
undertook an all-embracing process to establish a faithful and strong society. This is
a significant aspect and important lesson to
learn from hijrah.
Hijrah was one of the most important events
in the history of Islam. It is for this reason the
Caliph Umar adopted hijrah date to calculate years. Muslims chose hijrah as the focal
point to reckon their chronology. In physical
terms, hijrah was a journey between two cities about 200 miles apart, but in its grand
significance it marked the beginning of an
era, a civilization, a culture and a history for
the whole mankind. Islam progressed not
only from the physical hijrah, but because
Muslims took hijrah seriously in all its aspects and dimensions.
When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) immigrated from Makkah to Madinah,
he did not just transfer his residence or took
shelter in another city, but as soon as he arrived to Madinah he began the transformation of that city in every aspect:
Masjid (Mosque): The Prophet (peace be
upon him) first established a Mosque to
worship Allah. He himself worked in carrying
the stones and building that small, humble
but most powerful structure. That was the
beginning, but soon other mosques were
established in Madinah.
Brotherhood: He established brotherly relations between the Muslims who migrated
from Makkah and the residents of Madinah
who helped the Prophet (peace be upon
him) and his companions. What was important was to have good relations between
Muslims. They should have their brotherhood on the basis of faith, not on the basis
of tribes as they used to have prior to Islam.
Intercommunity and interfaith relations:
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
also established good relations with other
communities living in Madinah. There was
a large Jewish community as well as some
other Arab tribes who had not accepted
Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him)

prepared a covenant for relations between

these communities.
Cleaning the city: Yathrib, previous name
of Madinah, was a dirty city. When the
companions came from Makkah to Madinah, many of them got sick and did not like
that city. The Prophet (peace be upon him)
asked them to clean the city and remove its
dirt and filth. Aisha said: We came to Madinah and it was the most polluted land of
Allah. The water there was most stinking.
(Al-Bukhari)
Water system in the city: The Prophet
(peace be upon him) asked the companions
to dig wells in different parts of the city. It
is mentioned that more than 50 wells were
opened in the city of Madinah and there was
enough clean water for everyone.
Agriculture and gardening: The Prophet
(peace be upon him) encouraged the companions to cultivate the land and make gardens. He told them that anyone who would
cultivate any dead land, would own it. Many
people started working and cultivating and
soon there was enough food for everyone.
Poverty eradication: In a short period of
time it happened that there were no poor
people in Madinah. Everyone had enough
food and shelter and the Prophet (peace be
upon him) used to give gifts to coming delegations.
Safety, security, law and order: Madinah became the safest city in the world. There were
very few incidents of theft, rape, drunkenness or murder and they were immediately
taken care of. In short, hijrah teaches that
wherever Muslims go, they should bring
goodness to that land. Muslims should work
for both moral and material goodness of the
society.
Did other Prophets perform Hijrah?
A hijrah was not something special for
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Rather, other Prophets emigrated before
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Yet, the hijrah of Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him) differed from those of
other Prophets because it was not intended
as a flight from torture but as the beginning
of the Islamic state. The eminent Muslim
scholar, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi, states
the following:
Most of Allahs Messengers, if not all, emigrated. However, their emigrations differed
from that of Prophet Muhammad (peace be
upon him). For example, Prophet Ibrahim
(peace be upon him) emigrated, as related
in the Quran: {And Lot believed him, and

Do you really know the story of Hijrah?

Salma Cook
When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) first started to tell people about the
message of Islam, he was talking to people who knew him and his good and honest
character. We might think that knowing the
piety of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
would urge them to believe in the message
and follow him (peace be upon him) but
the people were living in an environment
of many evils. They were engulfed in idol
worship, racism, tribal and family pride and
many types of injustice.
It took great faith and courage for the
Prophet (peace be upon him) to trust in
Allah and proclaim the message, knowing
very well the negative response that would
likely follow. But this was not the only act of
faith that the Prophet (peace be upon him)
exemplified; in fact, making Hijrah to Madinah took enormous reliance on Allah and
fortitude to face fierce enemies while laying the foundation of a solid Muslim community.
The disbelievers of Makkah were angry
when the Prophet (peace be upon him) proclaimed that they should not worship idols.
These idols were made of stone and all
sorts of materials (some were even made
of dates). The Prophet (peace be upon him)
told them that they should only worship the
One true Lord of all Creation who had sent
many prophets and messengers throughout time to guide humankind.
Devotion to the stone gods was one reason why many insisted on disbelieving in
the Prophet (peace be upon him), but another important aspect was based on pride,
as the Quraysh (the main leading tribe in
Makkah at that time) had been, for generations, responsible for providing for the
pilgrims who came to Makkah every year
at the time of Hajj. At that time the Kabah
was filled with idols and Quraysh thought
that if they believed in the Prophet (peace
be upon him) and followed him, they would
lose respect among the other tribes and
this important role that had been given
to them by their forefathers would be removed from them.
Moreover, with the pilgrims every year, also
came much economic wealth. In following
the Prophet (peace be upon him) the people of Quraysh felt they had a lot to lose
in worldly terms. Little did they know how
much they would lose in the Hereafter if
they insisted on their disbelief!
The beginning of Hijrah
While the Prophet (peace be upon him)
was patiently, gently and persistently proclaiming the message of Islam, his followers suffered under the harshness and severity of Quraysh who did their very best to
persecute and torture the believers, hoping
they could force them to give up their faith
and return to the worship of idols and immorality. But the faith and firmness of the
believers were exemplary and they were
prepared to face death if they had to in order to remain faithful to Allah Almighty.
After all efforts had been made to change

the hearts of the obstinate Quraysh, the

time had come for the Muslims to settle
elsewhere and the Prophet (peace be upon
him) chose Madinah. Slowly and secretly
the Muslims started to travel to Madinah,
trying to keep their movement away from
the keen eyes of Quraysh. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) was waiting for Allah
Almighty to order him to leave and travel
to Madinah.
It was a sensitive time because Quraysh
had reached the peak of anger and frustration at the growing number of Muslims and
the fact that Islam was still continuing to
spread despite their many efforts to thwart
it. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with
him) remained behind in Makkah, waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him)
to receive the order from Allah Almighty to
leave. He prepared two camels and provisions for the journey and waited patiently.
Unaware of the Prophets (peace be upon
him) plans, the Quraysh had devised a plot
to kill the Prophet (peace be upon him) but
Allah Almighty is the Best of Planners and
He did not allow the disbelievers to succeed in their evil scheme. A group of young
men, each one representing a tribe of Makkah, stood outside the Prophets (peace be
upon him) home, intending to strike him
(peace be upon him) one by one when he
emerged and kill him.
The Quraysh were proud of their wicked
plan, thinking it would rid them of Islam
once and for all without them having to answer to the tribe of the Prophet (peace be
upon him) who could not retaliate against
every tribe! Allah the All-Knowing Knew of
their plot and guided the Prophet (peace be
upon him) to safety. The Prophet (peace be
upon him) asked Ali (may Allah be pleased
with him) to sleep in his blessed bed that
night and then under the protection of Allah
Almighty, the Prophet (peace be upon him)
left his house and walked past the waiting
men. They did not see him!
And when Ali emerged from the Prophets
(peace be upon him) house the next morning they were astonished! They had no
idea how that could have happened. Because they were without true faith, they
could not comprehend how it is so easy
for Allah Almighty to make such a miracle
happen.
Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with
him), the faithful friend
When the Prophet (peace be upon him)
left his house, he went to Abu Bakr (may
Allah be pleased with him) and told him it
was time for them to leave. Abu Bakr was
ready! The greatest manhunt was underway! The Quraysh offered a great reward
to anyone who would bring the Prophet
(peace be upon him) back, dead or alive.
How evil they were, and how great is the
mercy, guidance and protection of Allah
Almighty.
Quraysh expected the Prophet (peace be
upon him) would head to Madinah, but he
(peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may

Allah be pleased with him) headed off in

the opposite direction at first to mislead
their enemies. They camped out in a cave
for some time and during this time a great
lesson along with an ayat of Quran was revealed. When first entering the cave Abu
Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was
so concerned about the Prophets (peace
be upon him) safety and wellbeing that he
insisted on entering first to rid it of any dangerous creatures, like scorpions. When he
was satisfied that it was safe he and the
Prophet (peace be upon him) entered it
and stayed quietly there.
Asma (may Allah be pleased with her),
a daughter of Abu Bakr (may Allah be
pleased with him), used to bring them food
and news from Makkah. She showed great
courage in doing this and she used to hide
the food in her clothing and creep out of the
city going into the desert. At one time, one
of the disbelievers thought she knew where
the Prophet (peace be upon him) was and
struck her harshly, trying to get her to talk,
but she said nothing!
At one point, when the Prophet (peace
be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be
pleased with him)were in the cave a group
of men, eager to get the reward money,
stepped very close to the entrance of the
cave. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased
with him) could see their feet and was very
afraid the Prophet (peace be upon him)
would be found. He did not care for his own
safety; all his thoughts and concern were
with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and
the great responsibility he felt in accompanying him on this very important journey.
Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)
whispered his fears to the Prophet (peace
be upon him) who comforted him saying
(what means): What do you think of two,
whose third is Allah?(al-Bukhari) The
Prophet (peace be upon him) was telling
his great friend Abu Bakr (may Allah be
pleased with him) that they should not fear
as Allah was with them.
Allah sent unseen soldiers, the Angels to
support and protect them, the enemies of
the Prophet (peace be upon him) were not
able to see them
When the time was right, the Prophet
(peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may
Allah be pleased with him) left the cave
and continued on their journey to Madinah.
If was a long and difficult journey and the
Muslims were in Madinah, eagerly awaiting
their arrival. Every day men would go to the
outskirts of the town, climb tall trees and
try to see if the blessed Prophet (peace be
upon him) was approaching.
Many days passed and still there was no
sign of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
There was no way for them to know that
the Prophet (peace be upon him) was safe;
they just had to trust in Allah and wait. They
had left their homes, undergone much difficulty and faced many dangers. Without the
Prophet (peace be upon him) to lead them,

What Is the Hijrah Calendar?

Muslims measure the passage of time using
the Islamic (hijrah) calendar. This calendar
has twelve lunar months, the beginnings
and endings of which are determined by the
sighting of the crescent moon. Years are
counted since the hijrah, which is when the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
migrated from Makkah to Madinah (approximately July 622 CE).
The Islamic calendar was first introduced by
the close companion of the Prophet, Umar
ibn Al-Khattab. During his leadership of the
Muslim community, in approximately 638
CE, he consulted with his advisors in order
to come to a decision regarding the various
dating systems used at that time. It was
agreed that the most appropriate reference
point for the Islamic calendar was the hijrah,
since it was an important turning point for
the Muslim community.
After the emigration to Madinah, the Muslims were able to organize and establish the
first real Muslim "community," with social,
political, and economic independence. Life
in Madinah allowed the Muslim community
to mature and strengthen, and the people
developed an entire society based on Islamic principles.
The Islamic calendar is the official calendar
in many Muslim countries, especially Saudi
Arabia. Other Muslim countries use the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes and only
turn to the Islamic calendar for religious purposes.
Lunar months each year
The Islamic year has twelve months that
are based on a lunar cycle. Allah says in the
Quran: {The number of months in the sight
of Allah is twelve (in a year) - so ordained
by Him the day He created the heavens and
the earth....} (At-Tawbah, 9:36).
{It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory, and the moon to be a light of

beauty, and measured out stages for it, that

you might know the number of years and
the count of time. Allah did not create this
except in truth and righteousness. And He
explains His signs in detail, for those who
understand} (Yunus, 10: 5)
And in his final sermon before his death, the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
said, among other things: "With Allah the
months are twelve; four of them are sacred;
three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada
and Sha'ban." (Al Bukhari)
Islamic months begin at sunset of the first
day, the day when the lunar crescent is visually sighted. The lunar year is approximately
354 days long, so the months rotate backward through the seasons and are not fixed
to the Gregorian calendar.
The months of the Islamic year are:
1. Muharram ("Forbidden" - it is one of the
four months during which it is forbidden to
wage war or fight)
2. Safar ("Empty" or "Yellow")
3. Rabi' Awal ("First spring")
4. Rabi' Thani ("Second spring")
5. Jumada Awal ("First freeze")
6. Jumada Thani ("Second freeze")
7. Rajab ("To respect" - this is another sacred month when fighting is prohibited)
8. Sha'ban ("To spread and distribute")
9. Ramadhan ("Parched thirst" - this is the
month of daytime fasting)
10. Shawwal ("To be light and vigorous")
11. Dhul-Qi'dah ("The month of rest" - another month when no warfare or fighting is
allowed)
12. Dhul-Hijjah ("The month of Hajj" - this is
the month of the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, again when no warfare or fighting is allowed)

The significance of the Hijrah

says: {And he said: Lo! I am going unto my

Lord Who will guide me} (As-Saffat 37: 99).
So, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him)
migrated from place to place till he settled at
a town in Palestine, where he was then buried. That town, Al-Khalil Ibrahim, (Hebron) is
now named after him.
Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) also
emigrated before he was assigned with
the divine mission. He fled from Egypt after he had mistakenly killed an Egyptian.
He sought Allahs forgiveness for that, and
a man advised him to get out of Egypt in order to escape peoples revenge. Allah says:
{And a man came from the uttermost part
of the city, running. He said: O Musa! Lo!
The chiefs take counsel against thee to slay
thee; therefore escape. Lo! I am of those
who give thee good advice. So he escaped
from thence, fearing, vigilant. He said: My
Lord! Deliver me from the wrongdoing folk}
(Al-Qasas 28: 20-1)
Then Prophet Musa (peace be upon him)
went to a country called Madyan, where he
married the daughter of a righteous old man

and stayed with him for ten years. Throughout that period, Musa (peace be upon him)
had no divine mission. He lived as a righteous man, a good husband, and a generous
son-in-law; however, he had no prominent
role to perform. That is to say, Prophet Musa
(peace be upon him) emigrated for fear of
revenge. He said, as related in the Quran:
{Then I fled from you when I feared you, and
my Lord vouchsafed me a command and
appointed me (of the number) of those sent
(by Him)} (Ash-Shu'ara 42: 21).
On the other hand, the hijrah of Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him) was not
only to escape temptation and torture of his
people. It was the starting point to establish
the Muslim nation, a new Muslim community based on Islam, the universal divine
message that calls for morality and human
rights. That was the very purpose of Prophet Muhammads hijrah to Madinah, and he
performed his role as best as possible. He
put the foundation of a sound Muslim community and established the best nation ever
created.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) arrives in Madinah
At last, the happy day arrived! The men,
who were watching the desert every day,
looking for signs of the travelers, saw dust
rising in the distance! As the figures drew
closer, it became clear there were two
of them! And then when they drew even
closer it was clear that finally the blessed
Prophet (peace be upon him) had arrived!
News spread quickly throughout the town.
People in their shops, in the market, and in
their homes heard the news that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had arrived. Everyone rushed to welcome the Prophet (peace
be upon him)! They sang songs of joy,
prayed and followed him (peace be upon
him) as he entered the city. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) humbly allowed his
camel to be guided by Allah Almighty to the
place where he would stay.
Everyone wanted the blessing of having the Prophet (peace be upon him) stay
with them, so letting the camel stop where
it chose showed the Prophets (peace be
upon him) great mercy and wisdom. There
were many more trials to come but the
Muslims, now in Madinah, had the Prophet
(peace be upon him) with them. He was
teaching them, advising them, and guiding
them. Living in his midst was a great blessing and they knew it. They attended to their
duties, gathered with him (peace be upon
him) and grew in faith.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) had
left the city he loved so well, seeking the
pleasure of Allah. And now, in Madinah, he
(peace be upon him) continued to seek His
pleasure and proclaim the message of Islam.

Call to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque

A leading international Muslim organization

has urged Muslims worldwide to mobilize
to protect and preserve Al-Aqsa Mosque
against daily attacks, violations and incursions by Israeli extremist rabbis and settlers.
"The International Union of Muslim Scholars has been monitoring the escalating
criminal acts committed by the Zionist
occupation against Al-Aqsa Mosque with
great concern. Such acts include dangerous attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque and arrests and killings of Jerusalemites without
any investigations or evidence," the Union
said in a statement obtained by OnIslam.
net. "Israel even dared to completely close
Al-Aqsa to the Muslims on Thursday," considering such actions to be "blatant violations of international laws and norms."
In the statement, issued on Sunday and
signed by Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Chairman
of the Union and the General Secretary Ali
Al-Qarra Daghi, the union warned against
compromising, violating, breaking into, and
the closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
It also called on the Muslim world and free
world to take action "and mobilize and
declare its willingness to support Al-Aqsa
Mosque, Al-Quds (Occupied Jerusalem)
and Palestine".
A state of tension has gripped Al-Quds city
over the past week after the Israeli occupations decision to close Al-Aqsa Mosque,
the Muslims third holiest site, last Thursday.
The Israeli closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque
compound, the first since 1967, followed
incidents in which extremist Jewish rabbi
Yehuda Glick was injured in a drive-by
shooting in Al-Quds (Occupied Jerusalem)
late Wednesday.
Yehuda Glick is an American-born Israeli
and the chairman of the Temple Mount
Heritage Fund, an extremist Jewish organization focused on "strengthening the
relationship between Israel and the Temple
Mount."
Later on Thursday, Israeli police announced
killing Moataz Hejazi, 32, a Palestinian who
had spent 11 years in an Israeli jail and was
released in 2012.
The Union said it "denounces the storming
of Al-Aqsa Mosque by the Zionist occupiers, the decision to close Al-Aqsa Mosque
in the face of worshippers, and then opening the mosque only to the elderly who are
over the age of 50."
"All of these violations, attacks, and decisions are completely rejected by the Union.
They are considered to be criminal in every
sense of the word."
The IUMS regretted in the statement that
"all this is occurring while the international
community and Arab and Muslim world remains shamefully silent".
Regretting the silence of Arab and Muslim
world, the Union has called for a Muslim
uprising to rescue Al-Aqsa.
The union "calls for a public uprising and

mobilization to rescue Al-Aqsa from such

acts. If we do not mobilize for Al-Aqsa,
what will we mobilize for, it said in the
statement.
Is there anything holier and greater to the
Muslims after Masjid Al-Haram and the
Prophet's Mosque, than Al-Aqsa Mosque?
"The free world, from east, west, north, and
south are called on to take action to save
Al-Aqsa which is at risk of being demolished at any moment in light of the unfortunate global silence. It is as if such silence
is encouragement for the occupation to
demolish the mosque," the statement said.
The Union also added it "demands the
prosecution of Israeli leaders who gave
the orders to their police system to track
down Jerusalemites and kill one of its
people under the pretext of attempting to
assassinate a right-wing extremist Zionist
who tried to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque, without carrying out any investigations. This is
considered a crime that warrants immediate international intervention."
It also held the "Arab and Muslim countries
responsible for any damage to Al-Aqsa
Mosque, Jerusalem, the Jerusalemites, or
to the Palestinian cause as a whole."
The Unions condemnations come as Zionist groups declared plans to force their
way into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on
Wednesday, November 5.
On the other hand, Arab activists in AlQuds have announced mobilization at the
mosque to defend it.
Jordan which been supervising Al-Aqsa

Mosque and other endowments in AlQuds withdrew its ambassador from Israel on Wednesday after Israeli security
forces clashed with Palestinians at al-Aqsa
mosque.
Al-Aqsa is the Muslims first Qiblah [direction Muslims take during prayers] and it
is the third holiest shrine after Al Ka`bah
in Makkah and Prophet Muhammads
Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
Its significance has been reinforced by the
Islamic incident of Al Israa and Al Miraj
the night journey from Makkah to Al-Quds
and the ascent to the Heavens by Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be
Upon Him).

Concern over killings

Continued from Page 1
killings and ensure those responsible are
brought to book, said Hussein.
At the same time the lobby group condemned the recent killing of administration
police officers and the twin attacks on Malindi AP camp and Nyali military barracks
in the region.
The Executive Director further said it was
surprising that a heavily fortified military installation like the Nyali barracks could be
attacked, stressing that the government
should urgently address the rising insecurity before it gets out of hand.
Hussein asked the government to change
its approach of tackling security to ensure
that the lives of every citizen are protected.

Garissa gets a High Court

In its plans to take justice closer to the people the judiciary has opened a new High
Court building in Garissa.
Presiding over the inaugural ceremony in
Garissa Town on Monday Chief Justice
Wali Muhammad Mutunga urged Kenyans
to use alternative conflict resolution methods outside the courts adding that such
measures will help in decongesting the
courts and reduce the high cost of court
fees .
Mutunga told Garissa residents to take full
advantage of the already established Maslaha system (Somali informal way of solving dispute) in the northern region to solve
disputes.
We are bringing courts to this region so
that the people of Northern Frontier District
for once realise they are Kenyan citizens
said the Chief Justice.
He further told the residents to seek justice
through the courts when their rights are
threatened adding that the people of the
region have the same rights as those living
in the other parts of the country.
The Chief Justice called upon the National
Assembly to support the Judiciary in setting up a high court in every county and a
magistrate court in every Sub County.
On her part Wajir Women Representative

the maslaha saying that this denies justice
to the victims and abets the practice.

hearing of high court cases.

Muslims urged to take

Dawah to rural areas
Muslims have been called upon to be
at forefront in supporting the spread of
Islam and empowerment of Muslims in
rural areas as part of the strategies for
spiritual nourishment and life improvement efforts.
These remarks were made by the Upper Western Kadhi Sheikh Shaaban
Issa Muhammad who stressed on the
need for concerted effort in ensuring that
Muslims in rural areas are imparted with
Islamic knowledge and empowered economically.
Sheikh Shaaban noted that majority of
Muslims in rural areas experience a lot
of challenges due to lack of sufficient Islamic knowledge and information adding
that it is prudent for Muslims to develop
measures to address the social and economic plight of Muslims in rural areas
and also better their understanding of
Islam.
He observed that most Muslim scholars
and Imams have been confined in towns
and urban centres leaving their Muslim
brethren in rural areas without adequate
support and guidance.
The Kadhi stressed that there is need
for Muslim leadership to take up its role
in the society and increase efforts in disseminating the message of Islam and
cater for the needs of Muslims in rural
areas for them to feel part of the Muslim
community.
The judicial officer pointed out that Muslim organizations should consider setting
up viable projects that empower Muslims
to address the myriads of challenges
faced by Muslims in rural areas to improve on their livelihood
Kadhi Shaaban further called on Muslims to play their role in portraying a
good image of Islam by giving support
and assistance to new Muslims as encouraged by Islamic teachings.

Water for Life!

While travelling in remote hilly areas of the northern parts of
this Country, One happens to occasionally come across a trail
of women going up on very difficult terrains with water pitchers
on their heads. Every morning and evening these women travel
5Kms on steep mountain path and shrubby plains to reach the
riverbeds where water is available. At the water source you will
also notice long endless queues of eager elderly and young mothers with small children strapped on their backs waiting for the rare
precious commodity- water. They travel back on steep mountains
path with these heavy loads on their heads. Thus for every pitcher
of water these women have to walk 10 km on these brigand infested terrains. This is part of the daily duty of women while the
men attend to livestock and other outside works of the household.
Rain is a very rare commodity and hence they live entirely depending on their livestock as their daily livelihood. People live in
great agony and pains due to non-existence of resources and
other required essential amenities. Due to paucity of funds/resources they cannot improve their living. They have been waiting
for government interventions and attention to salvage them from
this horrendous life for decades and that is hardly coming.
The only time when the government wakes up to the reality and
severity of the dire situation is when several deaths have been
reported in media and the indigenous populace resorted to sad
inhumane episodes of eating abominable delicacies like dogs or
even rats. This happens like a one off event and the rest is left for
history to take care of.
With the help of benign donors and well wishers Ummah Foundation has intentions to sink boreholes and shallow wells that can
be a source of clean water and sanitation in the affected areas.
One borehole can serve to an extent of 100 families in 25 villages
and we intend to extend it to more areas. With the help of these
benevolent, kind and generous brothers and sisters who care for
their fellow human beings, we will be able to accomplish several
projects that will help boost the life of the locals.
The objectives of these projects are to:
Increase water storage capacity in arid lands
Improve WASH conditions at health facilities and nutrition centres frequently used during emergencies
Improve access and use of safe drinking water, point of use
water treatment, good hygiene behaviours and sanitation facilities
as a means of reducing diarrheal diseases in areas with recurrent
emergency levels of malnutrition and around areas of improved
storage
Minimise crime in terms of reducing the vulnerability of women
and young girls to risks of rape and burglary.
Assist the Kenyan government and local communities to increase their resilience to droughts and flooding caused by changing climates.
It is our ardent appeal to all interested donors of good will that
we can team up to bring drastic changes in this poverty ravished
areas that have been relegated to fate.
