Envirmtal Scice Programs

With 400 acres of forested trails, wetlands, and unique outdoor venues, Saluda Shoals Park invites children into nature. Our
instructors are experienced environmental educators with a passion for connecting children with the natural world through
hands-on exploration that also builds scientific skills. The Parks exceptional science programs are designed to:
Raise achievement levels for students by using the environment as a catalyst for learning.
Encourage exploration of the natural world, giving real-life meaning to academic learning.
Create a year-long learning progression for students and teachers.
Students participating in the Parks Environmental Science programs will have the opportunity
to explore six different habitats found in Saluda Shoals Park including: cold and warm water rivers, wetlands, uplands, flood plains, and meadows. These habitats are home to hundreds of fauna
and flora species. Using both outdoor and indoor labs, park staff will facilitate field studies
utilizing the scientific method. Specific questions will be presented for each program allowing
students to test hypothesis, conduct experiments, measure air and water temperature and take
pH readings. Students will also construct and extrapolate graphic information, present mathematical models that support their hypotheses, reach conclusions and report their solutions.
