Lesson Title: Pumpkin Adjectives

Materials Needed:
- poster paper with a large pumpkin drawn on it
- markers
- pumpkin outline worksheets
- pencils
- Hairy, Scary, Ordinary by: Brian P. Cleary
Prerequisite Skills:
Students should have an idea of what descriptive words are and when they should be used.
Standard(s):
L.1.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when
writing or speaking
F. Use frequently occurring adjectives.
Lesson Objective(s):
The students will be able to identify and create adjectives to describe both the inside and the
outside of a pumpkin.
1. Present objectives: (What are students going to learn?) Time: 10 minutes
Today we are going to learn about adjectives. Does anyone have a guess of what an adjective
is? give the students a moment to respond and take a guess on what an adjective is. Those are
all great guesses. Adjectives are descriptive words. We use adjectives to help us paint a picture in
our minds of what something may look like or smell like. Lets use some adjectives or
descriptive words to describe Mrs. Scotts shoes. We could say Mrs. Scott has on shoes or we
could say Mrs. Scott has on black shoes. Whats another way we could describe Mrs. Scotts
shoes? Mrs. Scott has on shiny black shoes. Pick a few items from around the room and have
students pair up and use adjectives to describe those items. After students have had a chance to
share out with the rest of the class introduce the book Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: what is an
adjective? Read the story aloud to the students having them focus on the adjectives being used
in the story.
2. Present advance organizer: (A metaphor or logical connection?) Time:3 minutes
Now that weve read a little about adjectives we are going to put what we learned to use. Place
the poster paper with the pumpkin on it up on the easel and pass out the pumpkin outline
worksheets. We are going to use adjectives to describe a pumpkin. I want all of you to close
your eyes for just a moment and picture the perfect pumpkin. What might it look like, feel like,
smell like? Can you see it? Give the students a moment to imagine their perfect pumpkin.
3. Demonstrate knowledge or skill: (Input/Modeling by the teacher)

Time: 3 minutes

Now that weve thought about our perfect pumpkin lets think just about the outside. When I
think about the outside I think of the color orange. Demonstrate writing the word orange on the
outside of the pumpkin up on the big poster. Next have the students write the word orange on
their pumpkin worksheet as well. What might be some other adjectives we could use to describe
the outside of a pumpkin. How might a pumpkin feel if I tapped on it? Would it feel hard or soft?
I think a pumpkin would feel hard if I tapped on it, now if it was an old rotten pumpkin it might
feel soft. For right now we are just going to write hard on the outside of our pumpkin.
4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: (How will you know students
understand the skill or concept? How will they know they get it?)? Time:10 minutes
As a class ask for the students to think of more adjectives to add to the outside. As we are adding
words to the poster have the students follow along and add them to their own pumpkin
worksheet. Once a variety of adjectives have been written down for the outside of the pumpkin
have students brainstorm for the inside of the pumpkin as well.
5. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to this
lesson?)
Time:14 minutes
Students will be given time to decorate their pumpkins that will be hung up as decorations for the
fall party. As students complete them ask them to hold up their pumpkin and share some of the
adjectives that added before hanging their pumpkin up on the wall.
6. Plans for differentiation:
Students that may be having a difficult time coming up with adjectives to describe their perfect
pumpkin may need more prompting and guidance during the activity. Suggest specific parts of
the pumpkin (how might the inside of a pumpkin smell? How might the bumps on the outside of
the pumpkin make it feel?)
TOTAL LESSON TIME: 30 minutes
