Blessed eve
Spooky, eerie and gory usually describes the observance of Halloween, with the fun-filled trick or treat
at the side. Though literally meaning eve (vesper)
of day of saints (the hallowed ones), the Halloween
has taken on a distinct wardrobe this modern years.
Halloween is hence perceived to mean the night of
the dead or, in a scarier notion, the undead. Is it
proper to think of the eve of the holy ones as the
night of the diabolic which stirs so much euphoria
among party-goers with all the props and costumes
to flaunt?
The time must have come to place things in proper perspective. There are communities in Philippine
society which are pushing for the right way of celebrating or at least observing the Halloween and give
the correct attribute to the name.
Very recently, the Catholic Bishops Conference of
the Philippines news portal posted reports about
groups of individuals who are initiating moves to
bring back the real meaning of the All Hallows Eve
(Eve of Hallows). Instead of riding on the truck of
festive spooky parties, the people in academic institutions in Central Luzon and the Archdiocese of
Cotabato are rather lending a religious passion into
the All Hallows Evening. From the traditional outfit of
the satanic creatures of the dark underworld, they
will celebrate the vesper of All Saints Day in saints
costumes and wholesome activities that will highlight
the lives and virtues of Catholic saints.
Robby Tantingco, Holy Angel Universitys vice
president for external affairs spoke in an interview
with CBCP news of his opinion on lending a true
meaning to Halloween, stressing on the original intent of Halloween that is to celebrate the saints, not
the devils, because it is the night before All Saints
Day. He opined that by the customary freaky prac-

and lasting freedom.
The pains and suffering associated with death, in whatever form they take, are meant for our purification. They
are meant to unite us to the redemptive passion, death and
resurrection of Christ.
We need to be more aware of this truth of our faith
about death, so that we can more actively correspond to its
divine, redemptive dynamics.

They will also hand-over tokens to the local and international NGOs and other organizations in recognition of
their efforts and contributions in the rehabilitation of the
agriculture sector in the region.
Both Sen. Villar and Sec. Alcala will also meet the local and national media for a press conference. DA-8 will
likewise conduct a poster making contest which will be
participated in by farmers from badly-hit areas.

DOLE strongly calls for the barangay and the local government units officials on the rampant cases of child labor in the
region.
We also work together with the DSWD (Department of
Social Welfare and Development) to reduce cases of child labor by providing livelihood assistance to prioritized parents
who have minor children and is vulnerable to child labor,
Guzman added.
Apart from the livelihood programs, DSWD also conducted parents counselling for them to be informed about the child
rights and protection to lessen the rampant cases of child labor. (JEANE MARIE M.FAMINOGAN, LNU Intern)
