The Vocational Education and Training

(VET) Reform Agenda
The Commonwealth Government has launched a wide-ranging
VET reform agenda as part of the broader competitiveness
agenda. The goal is to make the sector more responsive to
industry, to streamline governance, to reduce red-tape and to
make funding more targeted and effective. This presentation
will set out what the Commonwealth is doing, including with
the States and Territories, the regulator and the broader VET
sector, to deliver these reforms. It will show how these reforms
support the growth of the oil and gas sector and more broadly
future skills needs across the economy. The future productivity
in the Australian economy, which underpins our future national
prosperity, relies a more responsive VET market delivering the
right skills.

innovation in competency assurance

management systems
Working in a highly regulated industry with a green hands
workforce presents a broad number of challenges for key
contractors and their supply chain. Competency assurance
management systems are becoming increasingly important
to ensure organisations employ a compliant workforce and
are able to identify improvement opportunities that enhance
workforce productivity and safety.

Safety: From compliance to from the heart

While compliance is very important in relation to safety, Energex
is skilling its staff to take a more personal approach to improving
safety, one that is more heartfelt than compliance driven. Staff
are trained in how to develop their own heart felt vision for
safety and how to constructively interrupt at risk behaviour in
others. The training empowers staff by providing the tools to
communicate their vision for safety.

safety and productivity: can we have our

cake and eat it
Companies invest hugely in safety management systems,
however, does increasing safety lead to increased productivity?
An experienced Barrister, John has assisted coronial inquests
in both the energy and mining industries and understands the
role of competence in workplace incidents. John will explore
the concept of risk, ethical and legal obligations of trainers, the
importance of having competent staff and the link to productivity
and the impact of safety on the social licence
to operate.

PANEL DISCUSSION:
MORE PRODUCTIVITY = LESS WORKERS.
DEAL OR NO DEAL?
Increase productivity is the catch-cry in a post mining boom
economy where companies try to comabt lower margins with
greater production at less cost. But is increasing productivity
the only answer and what does it mean for our workforce?
Is employing less people with more skills the only strategy to
build a bright future for Queenslands energy, mining and
telecommunications industries?
