Organic Rice Growing

In China, rice is one of the main organically grown crops

The rational amount of organic fertilizer for organic rice
growing is the key technique and common question faced by
farmers
Too little input cannot meet nutrient requirement, but too
much input will affect rice growth, pest/disease occurrence,
yield and production cost, and trigger agricultural non-point
pollution

Calculation of soil N supply (NS)

(T 30)/10

NS = TNAEN Q10

0.08 2.25 106

where
TN - total N in soil
A - acreage of field under cultivation
EN - soil N supply efficiency; correction factor (%)
Q10 - temperature coefficient of mineralization of organic N in
the soil
T - mean temperature of the entire rice growing season
0.08 - ratio of mineralized N/total N
2.25 106 - dry weight (kg) of the soil in the surface layer

The soil of the experiment field is coastal desalinized soil 8.02 in

pH, 22.7 g/kg in organic matter, and 1.60 g/kg in TN. Chongming
Island has a mean temperature of 26.1C
FpH = 1.0
FOMS = 0.419
EN = 0.316
NS = 77.78kg /hm2

Calculation of N requirement (NR) of rice crop

Based on the organic rice yield in the Yuejin Farm in 2001-2004,

the targeted yield could be set as 7125kg /hm2 and the N
requirement for 100kg grain could be set as 1.8kg; hence NR
should be 128.25kg /hm2

Calculation of N application rate (FN )

FN =

NR NS NGTR

where
NG - N content in the green manure
Tr - utilization efficiency
In the experiment, FN = 62.8kg

2005
Samples of soil and green manure were collected
The experiment was designed to have 5 N treatments
Data were analyzed with the Duncan method using the SPSS

There was little difference between the treatments in yield
although the net N application rate varied sharply between the
