As some of you may be aware Phuket has a large Hokkien

Chinese community who each and every year celebrate one of
the countrys most unique cultural celebrations, the Vegetarian

every 100 years. In this issue of Phuketindex.com we bring
you a photo special from the first and biggest of the two
celebrations which took place from September 24 to October 2.
If coffee is your thing, we give you the low down on some of
Phuket Towns most popular and unique cafes where theres
more on offer than just coffee. We also introduce you to two
off the islands newest dining establishments where authentic
Thai and French cuisines are the main feature on the menu.

Aromatherapy
All You Need to Know

romatherapy is one of the oldest

known methods of holistic healing,
equipped to rejuvenate the body,
mind and spirit with the use of a
fragrance or aroma.
Aromatherapy is an alternative and complementary health science that uses the psychological benefits of herb essences to manage
a wide range of illnesses. The volatile and
essential plant oils (the pure essence of
plants) are used, through the sense of smell,
to promote health and in treating several
diseases ranging from stress, arthritis,
obesity, cancer, pain reduction and dementia.

What is the history of aromatherapy?

Plant oils have been used by many different
cultures for both medicinal and cosmetic
purposes.
Ancient Chinese cultures burned incense to
foster harmony and wellbeing. The Egyptians
used plant oils for cosmetic reasons, and are
credited for inventing perfume. They also used
oils from plants such as myrrh, cedarwood,
cloves and nutmeg to embalm their dead.
The Greeks and the Romans used the oils as
perfumes, an anti-inammatory and to heal
wounds.
In the 11th century, an Arab physician named
Avicenna developed distillation as we know
it today. This enhanced the use of essential
oils through the Middle Ages, where distilled
oils were used as both a medicine and perfume.
Today, aromatherapy is used in North
America and Europe, particularly in France,
for its therapeutic qualities.

What are some common essential oils?

Lavender oil has a fresh and oral scent. Its
relaxing fragrance helps with depression, anxiety
and stress.
Rosemary oil smells herbaceous and fresh.
Its uplifting scent commonly helps with fatigue.
Rose oil smells oral and sweet and helps with
symptoms of depression.
Patchouli oil is a deep golden brown, and
smells earthy and woody. It is commonly used
to help with symptoms of stress and fatigue.
Sandalwood oil smells rich, earthy and sweet.
The oil is clear and slightly yellow. It is used to
help with symptoms of depression and stress,
and for promoting happiness and peace.
Lemon oil has a bright citrus scent. It is used
to help with fatigue, memory, concentration, and
promoting overall happiness.

What are the principles of aromatherapy?

Plant oils are distilled without the use of chemicals by heating
the plant through boiling or steaming until the oil vaporizes.
The oil is then used in a variety of different ways, such as for
massage, as a steam inhalation, bath oil or as vaporizers for
a living space.

Sage oil is a bright, earthy and herbaceous oil

used to help with symptoms of stress, anxiety,
depression, fatigue and feelings of loneliness.
Peppermint oil has a concentrated minty scent
and is used to help with symptoms of fatigue,
vertigo, nausea, headaches, and to help with
memory and concentration.

What are the benets of aromatherapy?

Different oils have different properties and can cause a variety
of reactions depending on each individual. For instance,
lavender oil is thought to have relaxing properties, so aromatherapists tend to use lavender oil on a client who is suffering
from stress or anxiety. Lavender is also thought to act as an
antiseptic on burns, acne and insect stings.
Aromatherapy can be used to treat or lessen symptoms of
stress-related conditions such as headaches and insomnia and
to ease discomfort associated with pregnancy and childbirth.
Topical treatments of certain essential oils can be used to treat
skin problems, cuts and burns. Steam inhalations can be used
for asthma and colds.

Is aromatherapy safe?
If done correctly, aromatherapy is a very safe practice. However,
because some plants contain harmful toxins, it is important to
understand the oil and how to apply it. Never put undiluted oils
directly on the skin (except lavender and tea tree oil for certain
skin conditions), and keep them away from the eyes and from
open ames. Oils should also never be swallowed.

Thursday 9th October 2014 saw

host a very special Oyster Bay
wine dinner in conjunction with
Ambrose Wine Limited.
The event gave both inside and
outside guests to the resort a
chance to experience an
extraordinary wine testing experience which featured five amazing
Oyster Bay wines paired with
food created by the resorts

details on the wines during the
course of the dinner.

Ben Perera
EAM Food & Beverage
Were very excited to have Oyster Bay Wines
featured at this dinner tonight, and we would
like to thank Ambrose Wines, who have a very
extensive wine list, for continuing to bring some
great wines into Thailand. Unfortunately, as the
tax for wines is so high in Thailand the wines
are very costly, but what were seeing now is
that the wine quality is getting better but not at
such a high price.
The wines we get from New Zealand are
usually of a very high quality, and after speaking
to Oyster Bays principal Mr. Joe Tan, he
explained that although the quality can be
comparable with The Cloudy Bay, quite an
expensive wine, the price is quite a bit less,
so were very lucky to have these kinds of
wines available.

the Pan Yee Island community. Weve come
here and played football with the kids and
also brought them an assortment of gifts. We
hope that by doing this they will become more

Tuesday 21st October 2014 saw

Laguna Phuket launch Seedlings
Phuket the resorts latest CSR
initiative which aims to provide training
and job opportunities for marginalized
local youths, and cement Banyan
Tree Groups first social enterprise
restaurant in Thailand.
The initiative, comprising 18 months
of food and beverage skills training
and restaurant career mentorship
programme, is targeted to realize
the resorts very first social enterprise
restaurant and the second outlet
under Banyan Trees group-wide
mentorship programme in 2015, less
than two years after the opening of
its first edition Seedlings Hoi An
by Laguna Lng C, Laguna Phukets
sister destination resort in Vietnam.

Claire Chiang Senior Vice

President, Banyan Tree Holdings
I feel very honoured and very happy
because Ive done this area of work for a
very long time, and to have such a large
number of different experts together to work
out a collaboration model I think is tremendous.
I dont believe that any one company can do
such a project alone, I dont think a government
can do it all, and I dont think that tourism
is going to thrive if it doesnt have a good
service attitude. So all in all, I think its a
helping model, involving so many different
people, that I feel it will make Phuket
outstanding. Hopefully we can repeat this
in many different parts of Thailand, and that
we will help those young people, who do not
have an opportunity, in other ways. So this
is the business giving back, or should I say
being socially responsible, for the people
they care about and should care about.

course include 28 custom-built wooden platforms,
all with safety lines, a 400 meter zipline that
provides spectacular views and takes you over
40 meters above ground level, a 40 meter abseil
down a centuries old tree and more.
Flying Hanuman was the original zipline adventure
in Phuket; however, many have followed in their
footpath, but Flying Hanuman continues to be
the leader with international standard safety and
a range of unique activities. This statement can
be backed up by the sheer number of customers
who visit Flying Hanuman, which are increasing
month on month and year on year, and by the
attention it has gained from media from around
the world.
In this issue of Phuketindex.com magazine we
show you an unseen side of Flying Hanuman
which has never been revealed before. Find out

We believe that local society is an important part of our

success and we recognize that we have received many
opportunities due to the local community. Flying Hanuman
likes to be seen as part of this community and to create
opportunities for the community in return. It is our aim to bring
smiles to the faces of everyone, especially disadvantaged
groups. In 2013, the management team and staff of Flying
Hanuman decided to partake in social activities to help and
deliver happiness to children of The Kathu Special Edition
Center, a place that opened to take care of children with
special needs. Now, on a regular basis, the team goes to the
centre to take food and sing and paint with the kids as well
as donate money. Its as though theyve been waiting for this
chance for a life time as the center is not taken care of enough
by the government. Its an amazing experience for our team to
see the joy the children get from our visits, and we are committed
to encouraging these children to continue to live with courage
and faith. Weve been so much luckier in our lives and we
understand that giving and sharing to those less fortunate is
something very precious for both the giver and receiver.

Every single one of us different,

and we are all meant for greatness. The only
thing is, not all of us will nd that greatness,
and use it to change the world.
It starts with passion, the passion to
improve, to build, to change. If youre not
passionate about something, anything, then
youre not on track to nd what you were put
on this earth to discover, your purpose.
Always remember though, that if you have
a heartbeat and air in your lungs, you still
have a purpose.

One of the songs we sing regularly

is We are the world, the reason
we chose this song is because it
has such a good meaning and
we need to communicate to the
children that they have not been
abandoned, and that there are
those of us who care about them
and want to make them happy.

Im so pleased that we have the

opportunity to help these kids and
I can actually feel their gratitude
that someone is going to visit and
spend time with them doing activities. I now understand the importance of doing work like this and I
actually intend to go to meet with the
children in my own free time and donate
what little I can to make a difference for these kids lives.

In life, we think of ourselves too much. I believe

that what we should be doing more in our lives is
giving. We live in a society where people are a lot
worse off than ourselves, and society should pay
more attention to those that are in
more need than us.

I must admit that I have never

done any charity with children
before and have never really
thought about doing so. However, since we have started
helping out at the center it has
really changed my attitude, I
now realise how valuable we can
be and how we can help others in
so many different ways.

Pipat Pupanna (Phat)- Zipline Guide

I would like to thank Flying Hanuman for doing this

activity. It has made all the business employees
work more closely together and we have got to know
each other in a completely different way.
Its good that we can be more honest
with each other and do something
good together.

Supachai Kleangkhan (Bike)

Im so glad that Ive had an opportunity to help and

encouraging the staff at the Kathu Special Edition
Center. They have so few people at the
center that its not easy for them to
take care of nearly one hundred
children with special needs. It is
these people who sacrifice so
much, and I want them to know
that I respect them very much.

Khun Kwan had always had a dream to
develop a small project by the sea; she
wanted to do the project alone and wanted
to learn more. This is when she returned to
university and studied management. However,
following her graduation she actually decided
to join a Canadian public mining company,
a big change from architecture.
Within this company Khun Kwan was the
Vice President of Corporate Affairs and an
Executive Director, she handled the office
management and dealt with local, government,
political and legal issues. During her time
here she learnt a lot about international business
including how to raise funds from stock markets.
The role also meant she had to deal with people
including ministers and politicians but also
local poor people. She saw life in many different
ways and too much politics was involved, it was
not what she wanted, she quit and in 2006
moved to Phuket to do the business she loves,
away from the city.

Whats your experience in Phukets real

estate industry?
When I moved to Phuket I already had a small
plot of land at Niyang Beach, I wanted to build
my dream project but faced many problems,
so in 2007 I decided to sell the plot which
brought a good return and gave my business
a great start.

uchada Sanksuwan (Khun Kwan) was born and grew up in Bangkok,

she is a graduate of Chulalongkorn Universitys Faculty of Architecture
where she gained an Honors Degree. 10 years later she mastered in
Management at the universitys Sasin Graduate School of Chulalongkorn.

Khun Kwan began her business career working as a freelance architect and
architectural illustrator. Unlike today, at that time, there were no computers to
make 3d perspectives so each drawing had to be done by hand. Around 1989,
when Thailands real estate industry was booming, she done illustrations and
presentations for many developers, after seeing what they done she became
more interested in that side of the industry.
Soon after she joined a small development company who bought and renovated
an old house to sell, she also did some turnkey interior design and landscaping
work part-time. She then worked in Hong Kong and later returned to Bangkok
to work with a big developer as part of its project management team.

26

www.phuketindex.com

With that money I bought two pieces of land.

On one plot, near Bangtao Beach, I started
the Miramare condominium project. At first I
thought positively, if I sold 40% of the project
off plan I could build without getting a bank
loan. So I finished all the design work and got
the permit, I was ready to build. However,
the financial crisis started in America and I
only sold 15% and it wasnt enough. I decided
to sell the whole project and the investor built
the project following my design, so that was
really positive.
That project taught me dreams and realities
are not the same. Dreams are nice and easy,
but in reality it was stressful, I wore so many
hats at the same time, it was too tough!
Now Im working on a smaller project, 2 sea
view villas in Bangtao. One villa is nearly
finished, the other I will continue next year.
I have invested low profile with money I
already have, so if I can sell thats great,
if not I will keep it, no loan, no pressure!

I dont call myself a developer, Im not

up to that, Im an architect who builds
from my heart, even if its not perfect
Ill be proud of it!

Dreams and realities

are not the same

How do you feel when people refer to you as a Smart

Woman?
I feel OK; people have good values in different ways! I would
be more proud if they say I have a good heart. To be talented
and successful doesnt mean youre a valuable person!

Tell us about your social life and fashion style

In my first 3 years in Phuket I didnt go out much, I only
started going out 5 years ago and went to every party near
my house. I felt great and made many friends, Phuket is like
a small town, everyone knows each other. Anywhere you go
youll meet people you know, you wont be alone. I like that
feeling; its like a big family.
However, in the last 2 years I havent been out much, Im
concentrating on my work and meditate, Im happy to stay
quiet. Although I do go for brunch or dinner with friends or
family or we eat and drink at home and talk and relax. But
I still go to some special parties once in a while.

With regards to fashion, I like to

shop at the wholesale market
Prathunam and the Platinum Mall
in Bangkok, Ive shopped there
since I was a teenager. My familys
not rich so I always bought fabric and mom made dresses
for me. I like to wear cheap things that look good.
I do pay more for some unique items, but at Platinum
you can buy quality goods at 3-4 times less than a
normal shopping mall. Even though I have more money
now my tastes still the same.
Brand names are nice but too expensive for me, I have
bought copies for fun because they look good and are
cheap, and I always tell everyone its a copy. Im not
against others who like brands; everyone chooses what
makes them happy.

How do you take care of your health?

I believe health and mind are related. I had a stroke 4
years ago and it affected my mouth, I couldnt speak
well and even now its not 100%. The doctor couldnt
find anything wrong from my check-up so they thought it
was stress related, I was so stressed about many things
for many years and my mind was tired and weak. Stress
can put many toxins in your body.

What do you do to make sure you have a

happy life?
I have some concepts to be happy;
First; realize that nothing is permanent, happiness,
sadness, love, hate, anger, money, fame, honor,
everything comes and goes so I try not to hold on
to anything. It doesnt matter if I live in a big house
or a small room, eat in a hotel or on the street,
drive sport cars or old trucks, success or not success,
have a partner or be aloneI feel happy the same.
Image Copyright Suchada Sanksuwan

So I tried to find a way to reduce stress and suffering in

life, the Buddhism philosophy and meditation helped a lot,
I dont know about for others but it works for me.
I also exercise, do simple Yoga, drink lots of water, eat lots
of vegetables and be happy, its helped a lot!

What are your favorite hobbies?

I like to go to the beach with my dogs, go sailing, watch
the sunset, and I enjoy nature. I also read a lot of philosophy,
watch movies that are good for my mind and meditate as
much as I can; it brings me energy and inner peace. You
can meditate anywhere and at any time.

28

www.phuketindex.com

Second; to be a good hearted person, kind, honest

and forgiving, nobody is the same like you so accept
them as they are, youll never know what they think
so dont try to know, try to think never mind, dont worry,
keep cool, little by little and then you will feel good.
The last concept is live and enjoy the present, the
past is passed and you have to let it go, learn from
it and move on, and dont expect or worry about the
future too much, it hasnt come yet, when it comes
if theres problems solve them, dont let them make
you suffer!
If you can do these things youll find real happiness,
its not easy and I cant do 100%, but I think I can
do quite a lot so Im happier at the present, the
here and now!

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2014

At 4pm on Tuesday September 23rd 2014, nine lantern
poles were raised at Phukets Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng shrine
to mark the beginning of the nine day Phuket Vegetarian
Festival 2014.
During the nine days of the festival observers make offerings
to the gods by purifying their mind and body and wear
white. Furthermore, they must refrain from harming lives
and live in peace and harmony with one another.
The main and most popular of the festivals events, which
draws thousands to line the streets of Phuket Town, is the

spirit mediums, or Ma Song processions. Ma Song, or entranced

horses, are devotees whom the gods enter during the fest. They
manifest supernatural powers and perform self-tortures in order to
shift evil from individuals onto themselves, and to bring the community
good luck. Ma Song falls into two categories: those who, having had
an intimation of impending doom, want to extend their lives; and
people specially chosen by the gods for their moral qualities.
Throughout the parade fireworks and drums are sounded. It is
believed that the louder they are the better, because the noise
drives away evil spirits.

Al-fresco Dining at its Finest

ining at its finest is found in dramatic al-fresco settings
that simply cannot be replicated within the confines of a

to achieve the splendour of a sunset, and no amount of
indoor originality can compare to the liberating view of a seascape.

If youre looking for an al-fresco dining experience in Phuket which

OWNERS OF KATA
SEA BREEZE RESORT

s Phuket continues to be a popular tourist destination

the number of both budget and luxury resorts continues
to grow. Thai and foreign hotel chains continue to invest
in the islands tourism industry, but there are also local
business families, seen as somewhat heroes to many Phuketians,
because they were, and still are, seen as pioneers of Phukets
tourism industry, and it is these people who have really made
Phuket the leading tourism city it is today.

One such family, who Phuketindex.com would like to introduce
you to, is an all woman team who are founders and directors of
a popular resort located on Kata Beach. In the following article
you will get to learn more about the Phatharaworanee family,
owners of Kata Sea Breeze Resort.

Mrs. Supaporn Phatharaworanee

Managing Director
20 years ago, Khun Supaporn started developing land in
Phuket and actually entered the real estate business with an
apartment in Bangkok. Late in 1990, just as Phukets tourism
industry really started to take off, Khun Supaporn opened
the Phuket Inn, an economy hotel in Phuket town; this was

followed by Patra Mansion, the first serviced apartment in

Phuket. In 2000, Khun Supaporn and her husband (Khun
Phatarasin Phatharaworanee) saw the potential of Kata
beach, so decide to buy a piece of land close to Kata
Beach, an area which had already started to become popular
with foreign tourists, but was still undeveloped in terms of
holiday accommodation.
Later that year, the Phatharaworanee family opened their
first beach hotel, a simple, 60 room property named Kata
Sea Breeze Resort. Within a short space of time, the
resorts popularity was far greater than Khun Supaporn
had ever imagined, and in 2014 Kata Sea Breeze Resort
expanded to become a 330 room property with improved
amenities and facilities, an expansion which was needed to
cater for the increasing number of guests to the resort.

Today, the day to day

operations of Kata Sea
Breeze lay in the hands
of Mrs.Supaporns three
daughters, each has their
own responsibility, but as a family unit they are united in ensuring
their family business remains strong in what is now a majorly
competitive industry.
Khun Kanokkorn is the eldest of the three sisters, she studied
hospitality and tourism management and her roles are encompassing the design and creating interest for the resort as well
as carrying out general management administration duties.
Khun Kanokkorn told us Kata Sea Breeze Resort is a perfect
place to relax, the property comprises of 5 separate buildings
with panoramic mountain views and a tropical garden.

The youngest daughter, Miss
Phanwara Phatharaworanee, takes
care of the resorts marketing; she
added In our early years, Kata Sea
Breeze Resort relied heavily on tours
companies and travel agents. In recent
years the market has changed
dramatically and there are now
large groups, who prefer to book
via websites, and this number is
increasing month on month, therefore
we are now focusing on promoting
to these groups via media publications and online media. Our main
customer base is Scandinavians,
Russians, Chinese and Koreans,
but in the future we want increase
the number of Europeans and
Australians who make Kata Sea
Breeze their resort of choice. Were
confident that we can win these
groups as we know what they want

The resort is the perfect place for all family

members to relax and they can spend all
day long within the resort, its also only
a short walk to Kata beach. The resort
features 4 swimming pools with Jacuzzis
and 2 separate kid pools, a Thai and
international restaurant, massage and spa,
indoor and outdoor kids zone and all the
facilities needed to fulfil a relaxing vacation.
Our 330 comfortable rooms comprise of 5
room types, Sea Breeze Rooms, Greenery
Rooms, Aqua Pura Room (with directly
access to the pool), Family Breeze Suites
and Splendid Suites. The main advantage
to our rooms is that they are bigger than our
competitors.
Khun Anchisa is the middle daughter and
is responsible for general office management; she told us Although were a family
run business it is important that we get as
much information and feedback as possible from employees
at all levels, theyre the ones who are in direct contact with our
customers, and if there are comments which need addressing we
also ask for their input on how to resolve those issues in the
long and short term. These kinds of issues should not only be
down to a GM to resolve, we all help each other and this helps
us to make decisions more quickly. One of the main strengths
of our resort is that we offer a family-style service, over time, a
lot of new hotels have opened in Kata and we need to ensure
we always keep our hotel fresh and in line with what other
hotels offer. This is why its important for us to do small or big
renovations on a very regular basis. We have a lot of return
guests, and we want them to continue to appreciate our place.

46

and that we are very competitive compared with other resorts in

Kata; we have large rooms which are ideal for families and long
stays, we have the full range of facilities such as a spa, kids club
and fitness centre, and we know for sure our prices are extremely
reasonable.

Looking to the future

Next year, 2015, the Phatharaworanee family will start on a new
project, a new four-star hotel close to Kata Beach. The new hotel
will be modern and will once again feature amazing sea views. Stay
tuned for more information as the project is due to be complete in
2017.

What are your visions for Kata Sea

Breeze in the short & long term?

Mr. Matthew C
Hindmarch
General Manager
VDO Link
A British national, Matthew Hindmarch has resided in Thailand
for almost 26 years.
Matthew studied Business, Travel and Tourism Management
in the UKs Durham University before joining Europe based
ILG Travel Group before taking a position in Bangkok to join
a team opening their new long haul destination Thailand.
In the late 1990s, Matthew changed his career path by joining
a local hotel group and has ever since been involved with the
day to day operations of several family owned hotels
and resorts in Thailand.

Kata Sea Breeze is owned by a Phuketian family and

theyve had this resort for 13 years, however, they now
understand that the resort needs modernising. So in
the short term we want to encourage all our department
heads to become more modernised and get involved
more with the day to day operations of the property and
bring more ideas on how we can bring the property more
up-to-date. We need the resort to be more fun, relaxing
and family friendly by having more activities going on,
but also staying in-trend.
In the long term, we need to expand our customer base.
We have previously relied heavily upon tour operators
and tour companies, we now need to be focused more
on online marketing as this is now the main source of
holiday bookings. We have already started to bring this
into the resort and it is already showing positive signs.
Were also looking to open up a lot more to families;
the property is already geared up to deal with them
but weve never really had them as our main customer
target.

Architectural
Features of Phukets
Chinese Shrines

or thousands of years, industrious and ambitious

Chinese have left China in search of wealth in
other Asian lands. One such place is Phuket,
where Chinese residents descend from those
who emigrated from southern China a few centuries ago to
work in the tin mines, and were responsible for much of the
islands sudden economic transformation.
Chinas inuence on the culture of Phuket is evident in the
numerous Chinese shrines found around the island where
the sea-borne immigrants settled, and these shrines have
many key features of traditional Chinese architecture.
The basic feature of these shrines is the rectangular units
of space joined together into a whole. This style combines
rectangular shapes varying in size and position according
to importance into an organic whole with each level and
component clearly distinguished.
This combination of units of space follows the principles of
balance and symmetry. The main structure is the axis, and

48

Local Life
Art & Culture

the secondary structures are positioned as two wings

on each side to form the main rooms and yard. The
distribution of interior space reects Chinese social
and ethical values.
Another characteristic of these Chinese shrines is the
use of a wooden structural frame with pillars, beams,
and earthen walls surrounding the building on three
sides. The main door and windows are in front. This
feature has been preserved up to the present.
Roofs usually slope in the usual fashion. However,
traditional Chinese buildings have curved eaves,
symbolic of the spirit of Chinese culture. While the
building itself is relatively plain and straightforward,
the ridge and eaves of the roof introduce a more
intricate aspect in the form of upward-curving eaves.
Three special architectural features resulted from the
use of wood. The first is that the depth and breadth of

interior space is determined by the

wooden structural frame. The second is the
development of the technique of applying color
lacquers to the structure to preserve the wood.
These lacquers were made in brilliant, bold
colors, and became one of the key identifying
features of traditional Chinese architecture.
Third is the technique of building a structure
on a platform, to prevent damage from moisture.
The height of the platform corresponds to the
importance of the building. A high platform
adds strength, sophistication, and stateliness
to large buildings.
The sundry colored sculptures and murals
found on Chinese shrines range from dragons
and phoenixes to owers, and birds. Clearly
these color sculptures and murals have both
symbolic and aesthetic significance. Such
sculptures and murals give the structure an
elegant and orid effect.

Enhance Your

Homes Exterior
Using Tropical Flowers
Tropical gardening is not much different than any
other types of gardening and using your imagination
they will enhance your exterior design dreams.

Whether youre in a bungalow, a villa, a house,

renting or owner, growing tropical owers will
create the perfect atmosphere for your premises.

Tropical owers still share the same basic needs

such as: healthy soil, water, proper fertilization, sunlight
and grooming. With tropical gardening, however, you
dont have to worry about over-wintering your plants
since these climates remain warm year round.

All you need to do choose the appropriate owers

that will enhance your particular setting.
Here are some of our recommendations!

Bromeliads
Previously, bromeliads were considered advanced or expert
plants; however, bromeliads can be easily adapted to regular
conditions.
Bromeliads are available in an astonishing array of colors and
textures. Even discounting their showy ower displays, bromeliads
are beautiful foliage plants, with strappy leaves in red, green,
purple, orange, yellow, banded, stripes, spots or other combinations.
As a general rule of thumb, bromeliads will thrive in the same
conditions as epiphytic orchids. However, they are considerably
more tolerant than orchids of uctuations in temperature, drought
and careless feeding.

Orchids
Orchids have a mystique that seems to set them apart from most other owers: They are elegant and almost unreal in their
perfection. Even though orchids are one of the largest owering plant families, every orchid species has a unique look.
Orchids of some type can be seen nearly everywhere in the world -- indoors, in gardens or in the wild.
Why are orchids so special? If you ask orchid lovers, youll get any number of answers, but the most obvious reasons that
these elegant blooms are special may lie in their uniqueness.

Frangipani
Nothing evokes that tropical feeling quite like the frangipani. Their
sweet scent and sheer beauty make them universally loved and the
blooms look sensational on the tree and as a cut ower.
Most familiar in their white and yellow form, they also come in loads
of tropical and sunset colours, becoming more colourful the closer to
the equator you go. Frangipanis are also tough plants that can survive
neglect, heat and drought and still fill the garden with a wonderful
perfume. What more could you ask for in a tree?

Sampaguita Jasmine
Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) is a sweetly scented tropical
ower and a native to southern Asia. The Sampaguita owers
bloom either singly or as bundles of blossoms at the top of the
branches. Blooming all through the year, Sampaguita are pure
white, small, dainty, star-shaped blossoms. The owers open
at night and wilt in less than a day.
There are three varieties of Sampaguita, commonly referred
to as Single Petal, Double and Double-Double. Sampaguitas
distinct sweet, heady fragrance is its unique feature.

Swimming
with the Best
in Phuket
Phuket has a number of swimming clubs
and the standards of the swimmers at
these clubs are varied. However, there is
one particular club we would like to introduce,
the Torwai Nakorn Phuket Swimming
Club, a club which we believe is of special
interest as the club was founded by Khun
Torwai Sethsothorn, who is also the clubs
head coach.

Who is Torwai Sethsothorn?

Torwai is a retired Thai swimmer who specialized in
long distance freestyle; however, he also competed in
the backstroke and individual medley. He is a single
time Olympic Games and a multiple time Asian
Games and SEA Games gold medalist. At the 2001
Southeast Asian Games held in Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia,
he won a total of three gold medals in the 400m
individual medley, 400m freestyle and 1500m freestyle.
Thus, Torwai is one of the best swimmers in the
history of Thai swimming.
Following his retirement, Torwai served as a lecturer
for the Thailand Swimming Association and also
started working as a freelance swimming coach
at various locations in Phuket including British International School, Headstart International School and
Phuket International Academy. In addition, he also
started to hold extra classes at weekends to meet the
demands of a growing number of parents who wanted
to improve their childs swimming abilities. Shortly after,
Coach Torwai had such a number of swimmers, some
highly skilled, that he decided to open the Torwai Nakorn
Phuket Swimming Club so that he could start to send
some of the better swimmers to compete in local and
national competitions.
Khun Torwai told us Since being founded two years
ago many of our young swimmers have climbed from
being in the Top 100 swimmers in Thailand to the Top
10, they have also taken home

a number of medals and trophies from local tournaments

and given our club the opportunity to compete at a higher
level, this is such a great life experience for young swimmers.
I truly believe that I have the ability to help and motivate
the children so theyre able to compete for our countrys
national team. However, the most important thing is that
they are trying and dare to dream, its not easy to be a
top level athlete, and to be one requires patience and
discipline. This is what I try to teach the youngsters,
in a very straightforward way, because theyre at an
age where they can search for themselves. Ive been
through that period in my life and I understand and
know how to manage it and I hope my experiences
I can pass on to the members of the club.
He added that any youngsters who enjoy swimming,
either for fun or at a competitive level, are welcome to
join the club. Swimming is a low impact activity that has
many physical and mental health benefits.
Swimming is a great form of exercise in which your
whole body moves against the resistance of water. Some
people who enjoy swimming want to take it to a competitive
level; this can provide the health benefits of a vigorous
workout as well as the fun and thrill of competition.
The main strokes used in competitive swimming are
breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and buttery.
The distances swum in competition swimming can vary
from 25 meters in a pool to much further distances
in open water. In addition, swimming is one of the most
recognized calorie burners around. It is awesome for
keeping weight issues under control. It is difficult to
determine the number of calories you burn when swimming;
this depends on your own physiology and the intensity
you swim. However, our swimming lessons are appropriate
for everyone! Khun Torwai concluded.

this pool is located in the Boat Plaza area and is

supported by several local businessmen who wish to
see more choice of sports for the younger community.
The pool is managed by a team of national coaches.

Earlier this year, Torwai Nakorn Phuket Swimming Club

opened its very own international standard swimming

FENCING CLUB
Fencing is a form of martial art which uses blades as its
attacking and defensive weapon. The most common
version of fencing today, also called Olympic fencing or
competitive fencing, is divided into three weapon categories:
foil, sabre and pe. Classical fencing uses the same three
weapons, but approaches fencing as a martial art. Competitive
fencing is one of five activities which has been featured at
every one of the modern Olympic Games.
In Phuket, it was previously hard to find somewhere to learn
or partake in fencing, but in 2013, the Andaman Phuket
Fencing Club was initiated by Khun Aroondetch Sae-Iew, a
bronze medalist in the 1998 Mens Junior Thailand National
Fencing Championships, and the former fencing coach of
Khon Kaen University. After several years of competing he
decided to retire from professional fencing and returned to
do business in Phuket. He wanted to give young people the
chance to learn about fencing and therefore opened a small
club with professional standard equipment and he became
Phukets very first fencing instructor.

56

www.phuketindex.com

During a recent interview, Khun Aroondetch told

Phuketindex.com that fencing is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. It increases stamina, reduces stress
and that the mental discipline required challenges your
mind. He also said it helps to develop exibility, coordination and muscle strength. Furthermore, it is also a
social activity that can be enjoyed at a recreational or
competitive level. This makes fencing a well-rounded
form of exercise with benefits that extend to every
aspect of a healthy and happy life, and he believes this
is good for everyone because fencing teaches to both
win and lose honorably and is fun to play.
Some members of the Andaman Phuket Fencing Club
have already taken home medals from the Thailand
National Fencing Championships and have competed
in the Sabre Junior World Cup 2014 which was held in
Bangkok.

Local Life
Sport

The Andaman Phuket Fencing Club offers Foil and Sabre

fencing classes for children over 7 year-old upwards.
What is fencing?
The sport of fencing is fast and athletic, a far
cry from the choreographed bouts you see on
film or on the stage. Instead of swinging from a
chandelier or leaping from balconies, you will
see two fencers performing an intense dance
on a six-feet-by-40-feet strip. The movement is
so fast touches are scored electrically
The main object of a fencing bout (what an
individual game is called) is to effectively

score 15 points (in direct elimination

play) or five points (in preliminary pool
play) on your opponent before he scores
that number on you. Each time a fencer
scores a touch, they receive a point.
Direct elimination matches consist of
three three-minute periods.

Foil - The foil has a exible rectangular

blade, approximately 35 inches in length,
weighing less than a pound. Points are
scored with the tip of the blade and

must land within the torso of the

body. The valid target area in foil
is the torso, from the shoulders to
the groin, front and back. It does
not include the arms, neck, head
and legs. The foil fencers uniform
includes a metallic vest (called a
lam) which covers the valid target
area, so that a valid touch will
register on the scoring machine. A
small, spring-loaded tip is attached
to the point of the foil and is connected to a wire inside the blade.
The fencer wears a body cord
inside his uniform which connects
the foil to a reel wire, connected to
the scoring machine.

Sabre - The sabre is the modern

version of the slashing cavalry
sword, and is similar in length
and weight to the foil. The major
difference is that the sabre is a
thrusting weapon as well as a
cutting weapon (use of the blade).
The target area is from the bend of
the hips (both front and back), to
the top of the head, simulating the
cavalry rider on a horse. The sabre
fencers uniform includes a metallic
jacket (lam), which covers the
target area to register a valid touch
on the scoring machine. The mask
is different from foil, with a metallic
covering since the head is valid
target area.

How does fencing benet children?

Khun Chanipha Sawatwongchai - Manager of Andaman Phuket
Fencing Club said Fencers learn good sportsmanship, selfdiscipline, how to compete independently and also gain quick
reexes. They gain a sense of accomplishment when winning

and learn to profit from their defeats. They learn to make

complex decisions, analyze problems, and think fast on their
feet. These ideals help children reach their potential in many
areas other than fencing.
Fencing helps children learn to pay attention and to develop
their decision-making abilities. Because fencing is an individual
sport, the fencer is solely responsible for their success or
failure, which becomes a great lesson in responsibility. At
the same time, being a member of a fencing club gives the
fencer an opportunity to participate in a group setting, where
friendships are made and true sportsmanship is encouraged.
Finally, many great colleges have fencing teams and are
always looking for experienced fencers. While scholarships
are few and limited to top-level competitors, having fencing
on your college resume provides you with another way for
your child to market themselves.
