Case Study for Assessment

College of Information and Technology (CIT)

An International University affiliated college in Nepal is currently running various


courses on Information Technology and Business Administration. Courses lead to
Degree, Advanced Degree and Honors Degree on the basis of completed course of
study. IT Course offers different specialization on Computing, Networking and
Multimedia while Business Administration has Marketing, Accounting and Human
Resource as majors.
Current Admission Process
Each course offered here has pre-requisite for admission eligibility. Applicants from any
faculty can apply for admission, but background course is essential for getting
admission. For eg, if a candidate applies for BIT having Management Faculty as passed
degree, the candidate should undergo a 2 month course to develop computer skills.
English is the language of teaching and learning. Hence, regardless of any course,
applicants apply for, a minimum score of 50 in English Course for the past degree is
essential. In case the score is less than 50, candidates can either submit IELTS score of
6 or higher or attend a How to Improve English Reading and Writing Skills module, a
single credit, 10 weeks course and Pass to get admission.
CIT mainly comprises of three components:
1. Pre-requisite Filtration Process
2. Documenting and Verification
3. Payment and Admission
Pre-requisite Filtration Process
Candidates are filtered based on
1. The Course Applied
2. The Degree Completed
3. English and Relevant Course Requirement
Admission Constraints
1. English Score of 50 or more. (if not, IELTS score of 5.5 or 10 Weeks Course)
2. Minimum of 50% in Past Degree

Documentation and Verification


Once the candidates are filtered from screening process, the documents are collected
and are verified.
Checklist of Documents
1. Citizenship Certificate (Official Embassy Letter in case of Foreign Nationals)
2. Transcript of Passed Degree
3. Other Documents if Applicable (IELTS Score)
The documents collected are verified. The Boards awarding the Passed Degree of the
Candidates are validated. The External Body is responsible for verification of
documents.
Payment and Admission
Once the Verification process is complete, only the verified candidates are eligible for
admission. Finance Officer keeps record of Payments and finally candidate gets
admission. Payment includes Admission Fee (to university) and Course Fee (to
college).
Notification System
Notification System works in background. The system sends notification in form of SMS
or email or simply as Status on application to Candidates, Recruitment Officers,
Evaluator and Finance Officer. The system is synchronized and activated in each
stages of the Admission Process.

R1. Can add/update/delete Courses/Specialization
R2. Can filter candidates as per requirements

System Requirements
The system should be a total web based system. The Notification System should be
integrated with all other systems and users. The management should be able to view
various reports like
1. Total Number of Applicants Vs Intakes (Course/Specialization wise)
2. Cause Report (Cause of not being admitted)
3. Financial Report (Course Wise Fee Collection)
The college administration wants a promotional website for admission as early as
possible but not exceeding 1 month. Rest of the modules can be developed and
integrated gradually within 6 months.
Priority
Almost every requirement enlisted above is important for analysis, design and
development of application.
There can be found some dependency between the tasks different users undertake. For
example, candidates wont be able to upload the documents unless the pre-requisite are
fulfilled.
The MIS Reporting tool can only be useful once the transactions are operational.

Assignment Questions
You are given a role of system analyst for the development firm and are required to do
following task.

Make recommendations concerning the methodology or
methodologies available and most appropriate for this
particular firm and system. Explain the various
possibilities and give a full rationale for your
recommendations.
(Compare between at least 3 methodologies and justify the
reason for choosing one or combination of methodologies
with context of the project, also mention why other
methodologies were inappropriate)
Produce a plan for the development of the software.
Include a Gantt chart and a full rationale for the plan.
Make estimates of the cost of development including both
direct and indirect cost. Clearly indicate who would need to
be available for each part of the development process.
(Prioritize Requirements, Make Project Plan and
Development Cost Plan(direct/indirect cost, plan should
include the stages of chosen methodology and
justification)
Produce a set of suitable analysis and design
artifacts/products to model the requirements.
(Produce requirement list, design architecture, scope, UML
diagrams, ERD, Interface etc and others as necessary)
Keep minutes of your team discussions and decisions
made. This should show clearly who was responsible for
action for each decision.
(Include at least 5 minutes with clear decisions and task
distribution)
