Assignments Description
Design, Simulation, Implementation and Testing of Digital Logic Circuit
Research objectives:

For a specified digital system, it is required to address the following issues:

1. Theoretical design of the desired system.
2. Simulate the resulting circuits using Logic Works Software Package.
3. Buy the hardware components and implement on a printed circuit board.
4. Lab test and output verification.
Assignment deliverables:

1. The circuit hardware.

2. A Hard copy of the technical report include the following:
- The title page.
- The system specifications.
- The circuit diagram.
- The output simulation results.
- The lab test results.
Assessment Criteria

1.
2.
3.
4.

Two points for the well formatted hard copy.

Two points for the output simulation results.
Three points for the circuit hardware.
Three points for the Lab test and oral discussion.

General Notes

1. The project is written in a form of a technical report.

2. Last date submission to the Department is 22/5/2014 (fail to submit by this date means
losing the project points).
3. It is very essential to present your project, perform Lab test and have oral discussion
with your teaching assistants during the lab secessions in week starting Saturday May,
22, 2014.
4. Plagiarism of any form is subject to getting a grade F in the course.
The Selected Topics are:

Design, Simulation, implementation and testing of a Digital Logic circuit with

one of the following specifications:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Design of a Digital Visitor Counter.

Design a simple calculator that performs the simple arithmetic operations
Binary-to-Hexadecimal Decoder
Binary comes from 4 switches and the Hexadecimal output will be sent to 7-segment
Display
5. (8-bit) Gray-to-Binary Code Converter
6. Bits comes from switches and the output will be sent to 8-LEDs

7. (8-bit) Binary-to-Gray Code Converter

8. (8- Bits) comes from switches and the output will be sent to 8-LEDs
9. Octal to BCD Converter
10. Octal comes from 8-switches and the BCD output will be sent to 7-segment Display.
11. (4-bit) Adder/Subtractor Unit.
12. (4-bit) Logic Unit (AND, OR, XOR, NOT).
13. (4-bit) Multiplier (Using Full Adder).
14.(2-bit) multiplier with seven segment display (p.144, Mano)
15. (4-to-16) decoder using five 2-to-4 decoders
16. (4 bit) adder w/ overflow detection and seven segment display (p.143. Mano)
17. (4-bit) MUX with seven segment display (p.336, Floyd)
18.Digital clock with seven segment display.
19.Keypad encoder with seven segment display.
20.Design an excess 3-to-BCD code converter using 4-bit full adders
21.Design a circuit that controls a secure digital lock. This circuit compares two 4-bit
binary numbers and enables the lock whenever the two numbers are equal.
22.In a special test car for safe driving, the following conditions must be met before the
driver may start the car:
a. The key must be inserted.
b. The drivers seat belt must be attached.
c. All the doors of the car must be closed.
d. If there is a passenger, the seat belt of his seat must be attached.
Design the necessary circuit that allows the car to be started only after all the conditions
are met.
23.Any other related to digital system topics.

TYPING INSTRUCTIONS AND ACCEPTABLE FORM

FOR YOUR PAPER

Project Title
By
Student ID and Name
TYPING INSTRUCTIONS
Type the text using the Microsoft word (6 or later) and a laser printer on one side of an A4 paper.
Use Arial font size 14 for the text, bold face size 14 for the headings and bold face size 16 for the
main heading. The page set up should be as following:
Margin
Repeated page

Top
2 cm

Bottom
2 cm

Left
2.5 cm

Right
2 cm

Dont indent when starting a paragraph. Use single space between lines and double spacing
between paragraphs. Footnotes are expected to be within the aforementioned page margins.
Number all pages consecutively at the bottom center with soft pencil.
TITLES AND HEADINGS
The paper title should be bold face typed in capital letters and centered on the first page, followed
by author(s) name(s).
Subheadings
Subheadings should be small letters with initial capital letters for all main words. Leave two-line
space above heading or subheading and one line space below.
Sub-subheadings
Sub-subheadings should be all small letters with a capital for the first letter of the first word and
proper nouns only, with the text following on the next line.
EQUATIONS
Equations should be numbered in parentheses flushed to the right-hand side of the frame and
leaving a single space above and below the equation.
FIGURES AND TABLES
All of the figures and photos should be included in separate pages, placed at the end of the paper.
When referred to in the text, they should appear as Fig.1, Table 2. Figure captions should appear
centered below the figure in small letters. Table headings should appear centered above the table
with one line space between heading and table, e.g.
Fig.3. System block diagram
Table 2 Positive regulators in 7800 series
REFERENCES
All references within the text should be stated consecutively, with number between square
brackets. In case of authors names mentioned in the text, up to two names could be stated. Three
or more authors names should be shortened to the first author name with et. al. Examples: The
previous results [9-15] indicate , Lieu and Miller [16] derived , Forst et. al. [17] showed that.
References should be grouped together at the end of the paper, after the acknowledgment, if any,
with last names first in numerical order. All the authors names should appear in this list regardless
their number. Examples:
[1] Thomas L. Floyed, Digital Fundamentals, 9th Edition, Prentice-Hall 2007.
[2] M. Morris Mano, Digital Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals, 4th edition, Pearson.
