And having embarked in one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to push off from the

Context: This event is the Calling of the Disciples. It takes place just after the beginning of Jesus'
ministry, when his name has begun to become known.

JOHN 1:40-42 also records the calling of Simon Peter and indicates that Andrew, his brother, had been
a disciple of John's. Andrew brought Peter to Jesus. Are the two compatible?

Isaiah 6:1-13 – Parallel to Peter's fear of Jesus, Isaiah says, “I am a man of unclean lips”

Pieper mentions this pericope in two places

First, as evidence of the fact that Christianity is intended to be didactic—Christ taught, among other
places, on the boat in this pericope
Second, Zwingli used Peter's confession of his unworthiness before Christ as an argument for the
absurdity of devouring the body and blood of Christ

Just makes the point in his commentary that the performative nature of Christ's word and the role that
the word plays in discipleship (hearing, leaving, and following) are thematic in this pericope.
This relates well to the discussion of Peter's words to Jesus and his casting of the nets. Also, the
fear of the Lord plays a role in discipleship...
