Adding and Subtracting Fractions

When Adding and Subtracting Fractions, you must always have a common denominator. It is also
easiest to add and subtract fractions when all fractions are in improper fraction form. In many cases,
improper Fractions are much simpler to use than Mixed Numbers.

First, change to improper fractions.

25

2 15 + 4 = 34, so 2 4 = 34

3 25 + 19 = 94, so 3 19 = 94

Multiplying Fractions
When Multiplying Fractions, you simply multiply straight across, and reduce the result. Sometimes it is
easier to reduce diagonally before multiplying. For all multiplication problems, you must convert all
mixed numbers to improper fractions first before multiplying.

Dividing Fractions
When Dividing Fractions, you always flip the SECOND FRACTION, then multiply straight across, and
reduce the result. Similar to multiplication, it is sometimes easier to reduce diagonally before
completing the multiplication step. For all division problems, you must convert all mixed numbers to
improper fractions first before flipping and multiplying.
