2.3

Environmental Conditions
The location of a site may directly effect the correct operation of the base station.
In areas of excessive salt contamination situations it is recommended not to place the
NB-441 close to coastal areas in order to avoid shorter maintenance intervals.
It is recommended to keep a distance of about > 1 mile from the coast.
Enclosures on coastal sites should not be installed with the air intakes facing directly into
prevailing sea winds or spray.
Installation under trees and foliage is not recommended due to increased levels of
insects etc. which may be drawn into the cooling system by the fans.
In areas of heavy snow fall the base station should be placed on a base construction
with an appropriate height, so that the air intakes will not be blocked by snow.
In areas prone to flooding the base station should not be placed on the ground,
because its bottom section is not waterproof.
Sites located close to excessive airborne dust clouds i.e. cement, coal deposits etc.
should also be minimized in order to avoid contamination of the cooling system and
increased maintenance.

Linear Power Amplifier (LPA):

The LPA is the RF power amplifier. An LPA is capable of supporting one or two
carriers (LPA-MCF).

Baseband Processing Modules:

Channel Coding Card (CHC):
The main function of CHC is the channel coding and decoding procedure.
CHC can simultaneously perform the channel coding and decoding procedure for
both traffic channel and control channel.
Repeater Card (REP):
The REP card provides a repeater function for base band signals. The cards sorts
the downlink signals from the CHC cards according to antennas and sends them to
the TRX cards. The card sends also the signals from the TRX cards to the CHC
cards in uplink direction.
Transceiver Card (TRX):
The TRX card has transceiver base band block (TRX BB) and radio frequency block
(RF). The radio frequency block is composed of the transmitter block (TX) and the
receiver block (RX). Both TX and RX have diversity configuration. The transmitter
block converts baseband signals into RF signals and the receiver block converts RF
signals into base band signals.
Core Controller (CC ):
The Core Controller accomplishes the signal transmission and data controlling of the
base section and manages the data transfer with the Radio Network Controller and the
Channel Coding Cards.
Overvoltage Protection and Tracer (OVPT):
Protects the E1 ports of the Iub interface and the external synchronization clock input of
the Node B from overvoltage and provides interfaces for connection of external
monitoring equipment without interruption.
Additional accommodate the Base and the Extension section of Twin Shelter a Mains
Supply Unit (MSU), a DC Panel, an Alarm Collection Terminal (ACT) as well FANs, Heater and Membrane Filter (MEF).
Tower Mounted Amplifier (TMAF):
The TMAF (optional) is a RF unit (external to the Node B shelter) which provides the
means to feed the overall Node B downlink signal to one TX/RX antenna and to amplify,
with low noise figure, the overall Node B uplink signal coming from the same
TX/RX antenna.

Ground and Power Supply Connections

The NB-441 has to be connected to the site specific ground system before starting the
connection of AC mains cable.
The ground system on site must comply with the standards IEC 1024-1 and VDE 0185.
All adjoining shelters will be grounded to the next in the row using a ground bar and will
be fixed to the bottom left and right corners of each shelter respectively. These ground
studs (M8) are also internally connected to the PE-Plate of the appropriate shelter.
For the NB-441 an external earth copper cable (16mm )must be connected to a free
grounding point at the lower left or right side of a shelter, which must then be attached
to the earthing terminal (grounding bar).

Iub-Interface - Iub Link Terminal

The Iub interfaces Iub0 and Iub1, located on EMI Panel, provides the communication
links to the neighboring Base Stations or to the controlling RNC.
The Iub interfaces are terminated with Overvoltage Protections (OVPT) which protects
the boards inside the NB-441 against overvoltage (residual voltage < 1 kV) or the
IUBCON, without overvoltage protection.
Two types of OVPT exist: OVPTE1CF for 75 and OVPTE1J1SF for 100/110/120
lines. If the overvoltage protection function is not needed, the IUBCONSF will be used
for 100/110/120 lines or the IUBCONCF for 75 coaxial lines.
Depending on the different cable impedances it is recommended to use:
screened cable containing 8/10 shielded twisted pairs 0,25 mm for
100/110/120 Iub lines. (for T1 the cable with resistance 100 and for J1 the cable
with resistance 110 are necessary.)
coaxial cables for 75 wiring, e.g. 2YCCY 0.4/2.5.

NOTE
Use only twisted pair or coaxial copper cables with braided shielding !
The outer diameter of the Iub cable should be not exceed 8 mm.
The maximum cable length depends on the attenuation of the cable, in order to fulfill
the requirements of minimum voltage levels to be provided at Iub interface according
to Iub standards. The cable shielding must be connected to the relevant ground pins as
close as possible (in order to avoid EMC/RF interfering effects).

2.7.3.1

2.7.4.1

External Alarms at ACTM

The access for cabling from external signal sensors on site is the Alarm Collection
Terminal for Base shelter (ACTM).
The ACTM provides 4 WAGO terminal blocks with 12 pins each for connecting
of 24 site input alarms and 2 WAGO terminal blocks with 8 pins each for connecting of
max. 8 operator commands. The max. wire diameter is limited to 0,5 mm (AWG 28-20).
The ACTM is mounted at the EMI Panel of the Base section of Twin shelter.
For connection of alarm lines, the ACTM must be unscrewed from EMI Panel and the
single terminal blocks can be removed to easy mounting of the cables.

NOTE
For connection of external alarm sensors use cables with braided shields only.
Remove the outer insulation for proper ground contact between the cable shields and
the stress relieving bracket of the ACTM.

Do not lay the IN-and OUT cables parallel inside the shelters plinth.

Connection of External Reset Line

If a problem occurs to the application software and the Node B is stuck, an operator can
initiate a remote Node B hardware-restart. The Overvoltage Protection for the External
Reset Line (OERF) module is the interface to the remote reset button and is located
on the EMI Panel of the Service1 section.
The reset will be activated by use of the reset button. The short circuit of the terminal
clamps causes a closing of the relay contact and perform a restart of the Node B by
setting the system-restart line to ground potential (active low reset).
The reset is performed as long as the reset button is pushed. As interface connector a
2 pin terminal WAGO-clamp is used. For connection to the remote push button, a 2 wire
twisted pair cable with a maximum wire diameter of 0,5 mm will be used.

Antenna Connections
The Node B has to be connected to the transmit and receive antennas.
The antenna configuration and the required cabling are dependent on the site and the
type of combining.
For detailed information refer to the site-specific documentation or use the corresponding customer documents.
For installation and service purposes it is useful to know, which hardware is connected
to which cell.
The numbering, seen from the top of the antenna pole, starts at an azimuth angle of
0 (north) and rotates clockwise.
The first existing cell whose beam centre line lies at 0 or more, is defined as
cell 0 or sector 0.
The next one following in the same direction cell is cell 1 etc. In case of omni cell the
cell no. is 0.

Preparation of Antenna Jumper Cables

Highly flexible jumper cables with a max. diameter 1/2 have to be used for connections
between the antenna cables and the front connectors of the combining modules, because the thick cables from the antenna are not able to enter the shelters.
With regard to overvoltage protection it is recommended to ground the outer
conductor of antenna feeder cables where they are connected with the jumper cables
outside the NB-441. These jumper cables must be fabricated of 1/2 highly flexible
coaxial cable on-site, if no pre-fabricated cables should be used. Fabricate the jumper
cables in steps as shown in the following figures.

Installation of the Tower Mounted Amplifiers

The Tower Mounted Amplifiers (TMAF or DTMAF) are the RF units (external to the
NodeB shelter) which provides the means to feed the overall NodeB downlink signal to
one TX/RX antenna and to amplify, with low noise figure, the overall NodeB uplink signal
coming from the same TX/RX antenna.
The TMAF / DTMAF should be placed as close to the antenna as possible.
It will be supplied and supervised by the multicoupling equipment (DUAMCOF) in the
shelter it is connected to.

The DTMAF provides two 7/16 female connectors at the bottom for the connection with
the Node B (lettered NodeB 0 and NodeB 1) and on the top both 7/16 connectors for
connecting the jumper cables to the antennas (lettered ANT 0 and ANT 1).

NOTE
The TMAF and the DTMAF can be pole-or wall mounted in vertical position only !
Each TMAF / DTMAF shall be grounded to the pole, therefore a grounding wire has to
be prepared for each device on site.
The mounting plate has a screw with a locking washer attached to it and a threaded hole
for connection of the grounding wire (see Fig. 2.52 and Fig. 2.54).
The grounding wire cable lug must have the right size for the M8 ground screw. The
cross section of the ground wire must be not less than 16 mm2.
The other end of the grounding wire should be safely connected to a well grounded point
on the pole.
Care must be taken that the draining pipe (see Fig. 2.52 and Fig. 2.54) is pointed downwards. The draining pipe is factory mounted. If it, for any reason, would be loosened, it
should be tightened again with a sufficient torque wrench, however not exceeding
2.2 Nm.
The draining pipe must never be obstructed or covered with paint which would impede
the venting and draining of the housing.

2.7.9.1

Pole Mounting with Hose Clips

The hose clips surrounds the pole and are fitted into the corresponding openings of the
mounting plate (see Fig. 2.57). This is the situation just before tightening the hose clips.
For the mounting, the following steps can be generallyrecommended. First connect the
TMAF to the antenna feeder cable. Take into consideration that the antenna feeder often
is very stiff and rather heavy. The position of its coaxial connectors therefore often determines the position of the TMAF on the pole.
1. Open the hose clips by pressing the button at the end of the clip lock and then
smoothly pull out the perforated metal band.
2. Move the metal band of the hose clip gently into the openings of the mounting plate.
3. Close the hose clip loosely around the pole.
4. Shift the TMAF into the correct mounting position.
5. Tighten the hose clip screws carefully, but do not over-tighten (see Fig. 2.58).
6. Connect the TMAF first to the antenna feeder cable (NodeB) and then to the antenna
jumper cable (ANT). The tightening torque must be 25 - 30 Nm.
7. Connect the grounding wire with the TMAF ground screw.
Check the tightening torque, 5 Nm.
8. The use of self-vulcanizing tape as an environmental protection of the connectors
is recommended.

60

Pay attention to the thermal dimensional changes of the antenna feeder cables.

The corresponding holes in the mounting plate have a diameter of 9 mm. The proper
way of mounting the TMAF on a wall varies from case to case. The best method can
only be decided by the installer. Please note, however, that the wall itself probably does
not provide adequate grounding, it may be insulated.

CAUTION
It is absolutely necessary to prepare and connect an adequate grounding cable to the
TMAFs grounding point.

Shelter Completion
The NB-441 shelters are shipped including equipment components, pre-installed by
the manufacturer according to the customer configuration:
sub-rack (shelf), which holds several boards and modules
DC Panel
backplanes (multilayer PC-boards, mounted at the rear side of the subrack)
shelter internal cabling, system cabling between the front connectors of the modules
membrane filter and fan units
Core modules, RF modules (DUAMCOF, LPA), AC/DC converters
semi-rigid cables for setup of the system cabling
The following items are planned for installation after setup of the shelter on site:
backup batteries
cabling between the shelters
link equipment

2.8.1

Installation of Backup Batteries

To enable easier handling of the shelters, they will be delivered without batteries sets.
Four 12 V batteries (supplier Hawker, 92 Ah) will be connected in series to a battery
set for providing the required - 48 V DC nominal voltage. The batteries are located in a
common battery tray. Several battery trays (total voltage per tray: -48V DC) can be
connected to one battery system (parallel connection), thus increasing back-up time.
If a label relevant to the characteristics of the batteries is delivered, then should be this
label stick on a good visible position of the shelter. A temperature sensor has to be
attached to the set of batteries of the upper tray in a shelter.
Each Service1 section of a Twin shelter accommodates one AC/DC system (6 AC/DC
converters) with one battery system connected to it. The battery capacity can be
configured according to customer requirements.
It is to distinguish between the two following options:
Minimum battery configuration:
The battery system is made up by only one battery tray in the lower area of the Service1
section. For this configuration a battery fuse (type: 00C, without rating) must be put into
each of both lever mechanisms (see Fig. 2.65) and parallel connected together. This is
due to the internal resistance of one battery tray being higher than if it were in parallel
with additional battery trays.
Extended battery configuration:
Apart from the battery tray in the Service1 section, Service2 Shelters are added with
additional sets of batteries connected in parallel. A maximum number of three Service2
Shelters associated with the same Twin Shelter can be added, with every Service2
Shelter accommodating not more than two battery trays.
When Service2 Shelters are installed, the fuses of the Service1 Shelter will not be
connected in parallel but reconfigured so that one fuse is used for the Service1 Shelter
and the other is connected to the subsequent Service2 Shelters.
Both battery trays fitted into a Service2 Shelter are connected in parallel.
All battery fuses in Service1 Shelter and Service2 Shelters are to be of type: 160 A GL.
On a new system the battery fuses are delivered separately, which must be fitted into
the lever mechanism and connected after the system is connected to the AC power.

Node B

This is because the status of the bi-stable LVD relay is undefined and if it is closed this
will result in excessive current being drawn by the smoothing capacitors of the converter
modules from the batteries, causing the fuses to melt.
For installation of an Hawker battery set proceed in accordance with Fig. 2.61 and
Fig. 2.62 in steps as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Switch off the relevant circuit breakers at AC/DC (S1) .

Put on the battery 1,2,3 and 4 into the battery tray (see Fig.2.61).
Mount the bracket of the battery tray (see Fig.2.61).
Connect the + pole of battery 1 and the - pole of battery 2 with the short metal bridge
and tighten the nuts with a torque of 6 Nm (see Fig.2.62).
5. Connect the following batteries in the same way.
6. Connect the blue loadcable to battery 1 (- pole) and the black loadcable and the
tempresistor cable to battery 4 (+ pole). Tighten the nuts with 20 Nm (see Fig.2.62).
Turn up the protection cap to the end position, during tighten the cables to the battery
poles..

CAUTION
Only use insulated tools for connecting the cables to the battery terminals in order to
avoid accidental short circuits.

2.8.2

Installation of Link Equipment

The link equipment acts as a front end, to provide the Iub interface.
Different equipment can be used for wire or radio transmission. Which equipment
will be used depends on customer requirements.
The number of link equipment, which can be installed depends on the height of the units.

NOTE
For connections between Iub interface in the Base Shelter and link equipment in
the Service Shelter, pay attention to the recommendation CCITT G.703.
The receive level compared with the transmit level should not be lower than 6 dB.
For installation of link equipment a mounting kit, designed for 19 units with up to
6 HU is necessary.

2.8.2.1

Installation of Microwave Equipment

In case of microwave transmission, the indoor units inside the shelter must
be connected via the microwave antenna cables with the tower mounted outdoor units.
The microwave antenna cable will be routed through the cable feeding module outside
the shelter.

NOTE
The outer insulation of the microwave cables has to be removed in the area of the
cable feeding module for proper ground contact to the metal lids.
Connect the microwave antenna cables to the indoor units as follows:
Unscrew the front part of the cable feeding module (see Fig.2.17) and take it out.
Feed the microwave cable through the cable feeding module forward to the front
connectors of the microwave indoor units.
Fix the microwave cables at the connectors.
Bend the microwave cables into the correct position for easy closing of the cable
feeding module.
Insert the removed part of the cable feeding module and screw it in its original
position.
Fix each cable at the stress relieving bracket of the cable feeding module.
Route the cable bundle forward to the outdoor units of the link equipment.
Install all required cables for the microwave equipment, which are not leave the
shelters (power supply, alarms and Iub lines).
It is to distinguish between three variants:
microwave equipment located in Service 2 shelter
microwave equipment located in Service 2 shelter with distance to Base Twin
shelter
microwave equipment located in Base Twin shelter
The following figures and tables will give an overview about the routing of the cables and
pinning of the interfaces.

2.10.1

Mechanically Connection of the Shelters

For the mechanically connection of the shelters the EMC/IP connection kit (Siemens
serial no. S30861-K4148-X) is needed. The kit consist of the following items:
ALTOFLEX EMC/IP sealing ring
2 cable protections (rubber profiles)
Joining bars (incl. alignment pin, nuts, washers and self-adhesive washers)
Ground bar
For the mechanically connection proceed in steps as follows:
1. Secure the first shelter using 4 bolts in the cable access area of the shelter to the
concrete foundation or to the site specific base construction.
2. Remove the plastic stoppers from the holes of the shelter side-walls, which have to
be butted together (see Fig.2.73).

2.10.2.1

Battery Cabling
If Service2 shelters are installed, the battery fuses of the Service1 Shelter will not be
onnected in parallel but reconfigured so that one fuse is used for the Service1 shelter
and the other is connected to the subsequent Service2 shelters.
This is because the status of the bi-stable LVD relay is undefined and if it is closed this
will result in excessive current being drawn by the smoothing capacitors of the converter
