1 Introduction
1.1
1.1.1

Purpose and Structure of the Manual

Aims of Installation and Commissioning
Installation and commissioning is based on an extensive and high quality final factory
test. In the factory each part is tested during its production process. The final factory test
measures all RF parameters such as power and modulation spectrum in their respective
shelter configuration according to the customer purchase order. All measurements are
in accordance with the 3GPP standards.
Due to these assumptions the installation test can be concentrated on a functional test
of the delivered HW.
The installation and commissioning of a network element is proof of:

Complete equipment delivery according to network planning and the customer order

Correct mechanical and electrical installation according to the installation documents

Correct functioning of the supplied hardware and software

The subdivision of the test into the following steps

final factory test

installation/commissioning (HW-test)
network integration (data base test)

allows a quick, economical and reliable commissioning procedure.

This is according to the requirements for modern communication systems regarding integrated self-test procedures. Since the function test is based on self-test routines, a
high degree of reliability is achieved.

1.1.2

Precautions (Safety Instructions)

Electrostatically Sensitive Components
General
All modules are to be handled with extreme care as each one contains many electrostatically sensitive devices (ESD).
All modules which contain ESD are marked with the ESD symbol.

Fig. 1.1

ESD Symbol

Rules for handling

The following safety instructions are to be obeyed:

Personnel should avoid wearing synthetic clothing and shoes with plastic soles, as
these encourage the build-up of electrostatic charge.
Before handling modules, personnel should be discharged of electrostatic charging.
For this reason personnel should always put on a grounded wrist strap before changing a module.
ESDs should not be brought in contact with electrostatically charged or chargeable
objects.
ESDs should only come in contact with high quality discharging material ("gentle"
discharging), i.e. should not be made subject to "harsh" discharging with, for example, a metal plate.
ESDs should be set down on grounded surfaces only (flexible bases with a grounding connection for servicing purposes)
ESDs should not be brought into the vicinity of strong DC electrical fields, e.g. cathode ray tubes/monitors (safety distance at least 10 cm).
All tools and test equipment should be discharged of electrostatic charging before
handling modules.
ESDs should only be transported in appropriate packing. A grounded wrist strap
must be put on before removing ESDs.
Modules should only be touched by their edges. Components or printed circuits
should not be touched.

System Voltages
All the system internal units require a power supply of -48 V DC (positive pole grounded). The external power supply is provided by AC mains supply of 230 V. Only trained
personnel should carry out those jobs.
Care must be taken because some parts heat up to a high operating temperature.
This warning must appear in the original German text:
Alle internen Systemeinheiten bentigen eine Gleichspannung von -48 V DC (positiver
Pol an Masse). Die externe Stromversorgung erfolgt ber eine Wechselspannung von
230 V. Nur ausgebildetes Personal darf entsprechende Arbeiten bernehmen.
Weiterhin ist zu beachten, dass sich einige Bauteile stark erhitzen.
Protection against excessive voltage contact

1.2.3

DANGER
When dealing with the power supply, note regulation VDE0105 (operation of heavy
current systems) with regard to the safety precautions to be taken.

Handling of Components
NOTE
When handling devices like PCs, monitors, printers, tape drives, etc. note the manufacturers instructions.
Cards/modules
Avoid touching the component connections, connector contacts or conductor tracks
(even when you are carefully grounded).
When extracting and inserting cards or modules, make sure you use the pulling and
plugging handles provided!
Modules which are in a shielded unopened housing are protected in any event.

NOTE
European standard EN50082-1 contains instructions on correct handling of electrostatic sensitive devices.

CAUTION
If the cards/modules are only being gripped by their pulling and plugging handles, they
should not be transported in a horizontal position (danger of breakage).
When you take a card/module out of its place in the system, lay it down on an antistatic
mat.
Make sure that all measuring equipment used is grounded.
If you are using ungrounded measuring equipment, briefly connect the measuring probe
to ground (discharge it) before performing measurements on cards or modules.
The plug connectors are unique coded to ensure that each card/module can only be fully
inserted into a mounting location which cannot cause any damage to the component.

Cards/modules of the same type are fully interchangeable, provided that their hardware
settings are corresponding (if applicable).
Moist cards/modules
After storage in a humid environment, modules with condensation moisture must be
dried before they are used. This is important because otherwise the modules will be
damaged or destroyed.
Special hint regarding the optical modules
Cards/modules containing a laser device are marked with labels according to EN 60825
/ IEC 60825 and EN 60825-1 / IEC 60825-1.

LASER CLASS 1

Fig. 1.2

Laser Warning Labels

WARNING
To avoid damage to health, you must observe the regulations regarding protection
against radiation from laser devices (EN 60825 / IEC 60825). You must always use
dedicated laser-protective goggles. Never look into open fiber-optic cable ends, as this
may damage your eyes.
Fiber-optic cables must be handled appropriately and with due care. Cable must not be
bent more tightly than the minimum bending radius (30 mm).
Optical connectors must not, in any circumstance, become kinked - even for a short period - or be subjected to impact loads. Similarly, tensile loading must not be imposed on
these connectors.
Protective covers must be fitted to fiber-optic (FO) connectors that are exposed, i.e. not
connected.
Mechanical damage of the FO surfaces inside optical connector surfaces reduces the
transmission quality (increased attenuation).

So avoid any impact load when handling the connectors.

If necessary, e. g. in case of excessive optical attenuation, the light emitting

surfaces of the fiber-optic connectors should be cleaned with a suitable cleaning agent (e. g. 99 % isopropanol).

To create an optical connection with minimum attenuation it is important that

the individual connector elements are properly and securely seated. The same
applies to fiber-optic connectors on the optical cards.

CE Declaration of Conformity
Important!
The declaration of CE conformity for the product is fulfilled if the setup and wiring are
carried out as described in the manual and the documents contained therein, such as
installation instructions, cable lists, etc. Project-specific documentation should be taken
into account as appropriate. Deviations from specifications or unauthorized changes in
the setup, such as the use of cable types with less shielding, can lead to a violation of
CE safety requirements. In such cases, the declaration of conformity is rendered void.
The responsibility for the resulting problems passes to the individual who caused the
deviation.

1.4

Test Strategy
When commissioning the Node B, certain measurements and functional tests are necessary to ensure that the hardware is correctly installed and has not suffered any damage or defects in transit or during installation. It is also necessary to check that the
cabling has been installed correctly and has no faults.
To ensure a close work cycle all steps have to be performed according to the task list
and in the sequence of the listing.

1.4.1

Principle of Node B Testing

After the power supply of the Node B is switched on, all boards perform a self-test which
can be considered the first test step. When the boards reach the state green (green
LED indications mean that SW is loaded (see 3.5), activated and the HW objects are
created), they passed the self-test and are O.K. If they dont pass the self-test they must
be exchanged.
The Node B is tested with the original customer hardware configuration and the original
software version that will run when the Node B is in commercial service. No extra hardware or software shall be used in the Node B before completion of installation tests.

1.4.2

Procedure in the Event of Faults during Commissioning

If faults occur in online operation they should be localized and cleared in accordance
with the instructions in the Maintenance Manual (MMN:Node B).
First the most experienced person in the installation team should try to clear the fault. If
the installation technician is not able to eliminate serious faults, a fault report must be
filled in, providing the following information in detail:

Description of the test step attempted

Description of the system response (LMT log file)
Description of any system activities taking place at the same time, e.g. work done
by other testers during modifications to hardware or software
Type of Node B
HW inventory
Decription of Node B SW release (detailed version string)
Version of LMT SW
Copy of the Node B XML database

The fault report must be sent to the Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

1.4.3

Dealing with Defective Modules

If a card/module proves to be defective, it should be sent to the repair center in an appropriate packing with the following information:

16

Name and code of the site

Name and code number of the module

3.1

Visual Inspection
A visual inspection must be performed for all delivered parts to make sure that the shelter is not damaged and the quantity and location of the cards/modules is correct.
Previous to this inspection the installation of the system as well as the shelter and system cabling was carried out as described in the Installation Manual IMN:NB-441.

3.1.1

Delivery Correctness
In compliance with the commissioning concept all systems will be delivered to the site
according to customers purchase order. In association with the manufacturing policy
the configuration of the system is done strictly conform to the ordering requirements for
that particular site and finally tested before shipping.
Under these circumstances the verification of the address as per shipping documents
with the actual site address guarantees the completeness of the system in quality and
quantity.

3.1.2

Signs of Damage
Inspect the entire shelter for signs of damage like scratches or dents. If the system is
damaged it may be concluded that the equipment was handled unprofessionally during
transportation or installation. Significant damage indicates that the final factory test
guarantee is no longer valid.
In this case the complete shelter should be returned whereas small scratches can be
corrected on site by appropriate paint work.

3.1.3

Unbroken Seals
The final test at the factory is carried out in the right configuration according to the site
requirements. A record of these pre-commissioning tests and results is provided together with the shipping documents. To avoid a time consuming check of the equipped parts
by comparing code and serial numbers on their labels against the test result table, all
parts are sealed by an adhesive sticker.
Unbroken seals at all components act as an indicator for an unchanged configuration.
Therefore the system can be considered to fulfill all specifications as reported in the precommissioning protocol without any restrictions.

3.2

Antenna Cable Attenuation Adjustment

Local environmental conditions require specific antenna configurations and the optional
use of TMAs (Tower Mounted Amplifiers). As a result the length of antenna cables necessary can vary in a wide range. To accommodate this, the maximum receiver sensitivity must be adjusted accordingly.
The first component at the Node B shelter in receive direction is the DUAMCO (Duplexer-Amplifier-Multicoupler). DIP-switches on the front panel of the DUAMCO provide a
fast and easily accessible method to set gain settings to compensate for the antenna
cable length.

3.2.1

Make sure that the antenna cable parameters are document after the installation of the
antenna system is completed according to the installation manual:
- length and type of all antenna feeder cables
- length and type of all antenna jumper cables
Information about the cable parameters supplied by subcontractors may be required.

Checking the Settings at DUAMCO

The DUAMCO supports two basic modes:

AMCO mode
MUCO mode

The AMCO mode is given when no TMA is involved and the MUCO mode has to be chosen if a TMA is installed. This mode setting is done by one of the DIP-switches whereas
the other DIP-switches are relevant for the attenuation in a range from 0 to 12 dB in
steps of 1 dB.
Check the DIP-switch settings according to the required mode and attenuation. The attenuation is determined by the site specific antenna cable type and length and should
already be set at the factory to the required values.
For detailed information about the DIP-switch location and the attenuation matrix refer
to the Hardware Manual HWMN:Node B Cards/Modules. If necessary to define the attenuation please carry on with the next sub-chapter.

Power Interface
Precondition: The mains circuit breakers at the local AC power supply assigned
to the shelter under inspection are in position OFF!

NOTE
Make sure that all connections are made and that the breakers at the AC-Panel, DCPanel and LE-Panel are all switched off (see HWMN:Node B Racks/Shelters).

NOTE
If a backup battery is installed the battery fuses respectively battery breakers have to
be pulled out / switched off as shown in the IMN:NB-441.

NOTE
Check that the AC switch at each single AC/DC rectifier is in the position ON.
(see HWMN:Node B Racks/Shelters).
At the bottom of the shelter the 230V mains supply cables are connected to the Node B
by means of a terminal block located in the plinth of service1 section. To gain access to
the clamps the plinth has to be opened (refer to the IMN:NB-441).
Steps to be performed:
1. Remove the front cover of the plinth.
2. Check for tightened screws and securely fastened power supply cables.
3. Switch on the AC circuit breakers at the local main power supply for this shelter.

DANGER
When dealing with the power supply, note regulation VDE0105 (operation of heavy
current systems) with regard to the safety precautions to be taken.

DANGER
Be aware of the high voltage and use appropriate tools only!
The mains circuit breakers at the local AC power supply system are now switched on!
4. Measure the supplied voltage of each phase line L1, L2 and L3 (red measuring line)
against the neutral conductor N (blue measuring line) to be in the range of ~176 ...
254,4 V (see Fig. 3.2).
5. Close up the plinth again.

Get State and Status via LMT

With the LMT connected to the Node B get the state and status of all equipped
cards/modules. For detailed description how to connect the LMT and how to use different applications or enter commands please refer to OGL:Node B LMT.
The LMT provides different possibilities for checking the state and status of each Hardware Managed Object (HMO). Using the Rack View window the whole system can be
controlled at a glance. Selecting one of the three frames ACT, A SHELF or B SHELF in
the BaseRack the state and status of each HMO (card/module) is indicated by color filled
circles representing the appropriate LEDs for OST, AVS and AST (see Fig. 3.3).

Fig. 3.3

State and Status of an HMO by LMT

Another possibility for checking the state and status is given by the Tree View window
of the LMT application. Following the tree through the elements ManagedElement NodeBFddE - BaseRack to the frames ACT, A SHELF or B SHELF each HMO can be
selected whereas the state and status will be shown in a table in the right half of the Tree
View window.
The response for all HMOs has to be as follows:

28

OST = enabled
AVS = (field Value is empty)
AST = unlocked (not for all HMOs applicable)
ALS = cleared

Check of External Equipment Alarms

For the supervision of external equipment the Node B provides an interface for the connection of sensors which can be either high or low active. Every used alarm sensor has
to be connected with a couple of wires to the alarm connection terminal (ACT) as described in the installation manual (see ITMN:NB-441).
The alarm objects of all used inputs must be created and described in the active database of the Node B. This is usually done during the production process according to the
purchase order and verified in the final factory test. However if there are changes
against the initial configuration or some other alarms have to be added the relevant objects must be changed in the database first. A detailed description of how to edit the XML
representation of the database can be found in The Node B XML Database Editing
Guide.
The LMT is connected to the Node B and the application is running in the tree view or
rack view window for monitoring the alarms.

If possible initiate the alarm to be tested by causing the relevant sensor to become
active

Alternatively a short-circuit or a break between the two alarm connection terminals

will cause an alarm depending on the alarmValue attribute:
alarmValue = 0: making a short-circuit will trigger the alarm
alarmValue = 1: making a break will trigger the alarm

Undoing the taken measure will initiate an alarm cleared message.

Start-up not Successful

If the start-up of the system does not terminate with the normal operation condition only
limited options are given to resolve the problem:

30

Reset of the relevant HMO

A reset can be performed by two means:
It can be performed by submitting the reset command for that HMO via LMT. This
way is recommended: It works independently of the state of the card/module.
It can be performed by pressing the reset button as well. But there are states of the
card/module, which disable the button.

Replacement of the failed card/module

If a reset couldnt solve the problem with a HMO, the card/module has to be considered as defective and must be replaced.
For the replacement of a card/module refer to the appropriate procedure of the Maintenance Manual MMN:Node B

Reset of the Node B

As a final attempt the whole Node B can also be reset via LMT.

Call Technical Assistance Center (TAC)

In case of an unsuccessful replacement of the failed card/module the fault must be
assumed as more serious. For further investigation the help of the Technical Assistance Center is inevitable.
