For this assessment you are to:

Develop questions on the value of play. Include a list of questions
as an Appendix to your assessment.
Interview two parents or caregivers of young children (age 0-5)
about their perspectives on childrens play and their own
memories of play. If you do not know any parents of children in

that age group, you can interview parents of older children and
ask them to recall their perspectives on their childrens play from
when they were younger.
Before you interview your participants, you are required to gain
their signed consent. A Proforma of a consent letter will be
available on FLECS: Blackboard, however you must produce your
own informed consent form and you must ask each participant
to sign it before he/she agrees to be interviewed. Remember to
reassure participants that you will use pseudonyms and that
therefore their identities will be protected.
When your interviews are completed, transcribe them. Include
these transcriptions to your assessment as an appendix.
Then you need to analyse your participants responses, looking
for commonalities AND/OR contradictions. Focus on their
perspectives and try to understand if they are coherent with each
other or contradictory.
Write a report that outlines the commonalities and contradictions
that you found in your participants responses. Respond to the
questions above to guide your discussion and explanation.
Include excerpts of your participants responses (full
transcriptions can be included as an Appendix). You should aim to
tell their story of play, their point of view on play.
Remember to use pseudonyms in the report. Include a copy of
your consent letter as an Appendix (you must keep the signed
letters - just include a blank copy with the assessment).
Analyse your participants responses in light of the theoretical

perspectives and unit readings. Discuss and explain whether or

not your participants views and perspectives reflect: Classical
Theories; Contemporary Theories; Bronfenbrenners theory;
Assumptions about Play. Discuss whether participants may or
may not have shared views that reflect particular theoretical
perspectives. You are not required to discuss all theories, only
those that are relevant to your participants responses.
Use your responses to weekly focus questions to support your
analysis and guide your discussion. Refer to prescribed and
additional readings where relevant. You must utilise correct APA
referencing format remember to consistently acknowledge your
source and reference the author/authors of the views you are
discussing.
Focus on contemporary theories of play to discuss how you would
further encourage parents to value the role of play in childrens
learning.
Remember that this assessment aims to develop and assess your
understanding of theory; therefore your discussion and analysis
must indicate a sound understanding of the theoretical
perspectives addressed in the unit. You are expected to back up
your interpretations with references to theory and brief
explanations of the assumptions and limitations of the theories
you are discussing.

The word limit for this assessment is 2500 words. You must
include a word count.
Appendix is not included in word count.
