Lesson Plan: Integrating Technology and Pedagogy Directions and Outline

Alexis Facteau
Grade 8: Geometry Lesson
Pythagorean Theorem
New York State Teaching Standards:
A. NYS P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics:
a. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right
triangles in real world and mathematical problems in two and three
dimensions.
B. Technology Standards (ISTE NETS):
a. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.
b. Model digital age work and learning.
c. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities.
e. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for
investigation.
f. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and
technology.
g. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration,
learning, and productivity.
h. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning.
i. Understand and use technology systems.
j. Select and use applications effectively and productively.
k. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies.
Lesson Objectives:
A. Content Area:
The students should have background knowledge of the Pythagorean Theorem.
They will need to apply the vocabulary learned. In the lesson today, the students
will understand how to use the Pythagorean Theorem in both real world situations
and mathematical problems. They will apply the Pythagorean Theorem in several
examples. The students will recognize the relationship of the sides and use that
relationship to form patterns of similar triangles.
B. Technology:
The students in this lesson will explore the use of a scientific calculator. Then, the
students will be able to use the technology to review and practice this skill later.
Introduction to Learning:
A. The teacher will begin by asking the students what they remember about the
Pythagorean Theorem proof.
a. In doing this, let them reconstruct what we discussed last class.

b. Certain things to make sure they remember or review is the Pythagorean

Theorem formula, to use the formula it has to be a right triangle,
and what the hypotenuse is.
B. After spending a few minutes reviewing the last lesson, the teacher will explain that
we will now be working with the Pythagorean Theorem formula in real world
situations and general mathematical problems.
*Note: This should be written on the board before the students arrive so that they
can review what the agenda is for the class period.
C. The teacher will now have to displace the PowerPoint found under the Presentations
tab on the teachers website http://personal.plattsburgh.edu/afact002/. Click on the
Pythagorean Theorem link and scroll down to the PowerPoint and download to the
computer.
D. The teacher will show a video on Youtube, "Pythagorean Theorem Song".
a. This can be found by clicking on the colorful dancing people in the
PowerPoint slide 2 or at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8-bnZh8Zuc
b. The teacher can find this PowerPoint in Presentations of the teacher's
website http://personal.plattsburgh.edu/afact002/
c. This will motivate the students to be interested in the lesson to come.
Information (Notes):
A. Refer to the PowerPoint for notes that students need to take from slides 1-7
B. In the PowerPoint, they will officially take notes on the formula, definitions, and
beginner examples.
Practice:
A. Pythagorean Theorem Baseball Game
a. The students will go to the computers and log onto the teachers website.
http://personal.plattsburgh.edu/afact002/
b. In the Resources tab, the students will find the game "Pythagorean Theorem
Baseball Game" or
http://www.factmonster.com/math/knowledgebox/player.html?movie=sfw41555
They will play this game individually.
c. They will also open and use the web scientific calculator that is provided on
the website or http://web2.0calc.com/
d. Using the calculator, the students will play the baseball game
for 3-5 minutes.
e. This fun activity will allow them to work with the formula on an introductory
level.
f. During this time, the teacher will monitor the students by walking around the
room and:
1. making sure the students are on task,
2. checking that the students understanding the objective, and
3. providing positive feedback.
B. Interactive Pythagorean Explorer

a. The students will go back to the Resource tab on the teacher's website and find
"Interactive Pythagorean Explorer".
http://shodor.org/interactivate/activities/PythagoreanExplorer/
b. This website is more intricate than the first one; the teacher will open the
website on the projector screen and model one problem for the students.
c. Individually, the students will work on these intermediate problems. They will
begin on level 1, and proceed to more difficult levels as they advance.
d. Using the same web calculator provided, they will work on this website for
5-10 minutes.
e. Again, during this time, the teacher will monitor the students by walking
around the room and:
1. making sure the students are on task,
2. checking that the students understanding the objective, and
3. providing positive feedback.
C. Real -World Application
a. At this time, the students will only need the web scientific calculator, a piece of
paper, and a pencil.
b. The teacher will refer to the same PowerPoint and continue from slides 9-11.
c. There will be 3 real-world word problems for the students to complete.
d. The teacher needs to explain to the students that it will be collected and only
checked for understanding.
e. The teacher should walk around the room to give hints and check for when
students complete the problem so that they can move on to the next one.
f. Once all 3 problems are completed the students will hand in the assignment and
return back to their seats.
Knowledge of the Results:
A. Verbally, throughout the entire lessons the teacher should be provided positive
feedback to the students. The teacher should find something positive for each
student regardless if they end up with a correct answer. (Positive effort comment,
positive attitude comment, etc.)
B. In the real-world application assignment, the teacher will check for understanding.
This will be noted to and for the teacher to keep track of the students' progress.
However, positive feedback will be written on the assignment for the student.
(Positive effort comment, quality of work comment, etc.)
Review Activity:
A. Jeopardy
a. The teacher will split the students into 4 groups. (About 5 students per group)
As the teacher is doing that, a student will pass out the scientific
calculators that are in the classroom.
b. The teacher will retrieve the "Pythagorean Theorem Jeopardy Game" by
clicking the blue spiked bubble on slide 12 in the PowerPoint or

http://www.math-play.com/Pythagorean-Theorem-Jeopardy/PythagoreanTheorem-Jeopardy.html
c. The teacher will assign each group a color and a captain that will raise their
hand when the group thinks they have the correct answer.
d. The class will play this game until there is 5 minutes left in the class.
B. "My Favorite No"
a. The teacher will pass out a note card to each student.
b. The teacher will go to slide 13 of the same PowerPoint.
c. There will be a problem for the students to perform anonymously. They may
use the scientific calculators that they received during the jeopardy game.
d. Once they are done, they will flip the note card over and wait for the teacher to
collect them.
e. At this time, the teacher will separate the note cards into two piles,
yes (correct) and no (incorrect).
f. The teacher will then go through the no (incorrect) pile and find their favorite
no, often picking a note card where a student made a common mistake.
g. The teacher will put the solution that the student gave on the note card picked
and ask the students where the mistake is.
h. If the students cannot find the mistake, then the teacher will point out the
common mistake usually performed and discuss the correct
answer.
i. Note: This should be a very quick activity!
Method of Assessment:
A. Content Area:
a. The teacher will provide the students with a worksheet for homework. This
worksheet will have 10 questions/problems that review all the objectives.
b. The homework will be collected the next class and graded accordingly.
c. The real-world applications assignment will also check the students
individually for understanding.
d. The teacher will assess the class as a whole for understanding during the
review activities, jeopardy and "My Favorite No".
B. Technology:
a. The teacher will assess the students understanding of using the different
websites while they are working on them. This is at the point when the
teacher is walking around the classroom checking on the students.
b. The teacher will assess the students understanding of the scientific calculator
both while the students on the computers and using the calculators in the
classroom.
