System 9000 Actuator Retrofit for Valtek Mark One Valves

System 9000 Actuator Retrofit

You can retrofit a System 9000 actuator (size 20) to
mount on a Valtek Mark One valve by replacing the
standard yoke, stem connector, and jam nut with the
parts listed in this Installation Instructions sheet. Follow the installation procedures outlined in this instruction sheet and the System 9000 instruction manual,
Form 5408.

POINT A
O-RING LOCATION

WARNING

Disconnect any operating lines providing air pressure, electric power, or a

control signal to the actuator. Be sure
the actuator cannot suddenly open or
close the valve.
 Use bypass valves or completely
shut off the process to isolate the valve
from process pressure. Relieve process
pressure from both sides of the valve.
Drain the process media from both
sides of the valve.
Vent the pneumatic actuator loading pressure.
Use lock-out procedures to be sure
that the above measures stay in effect
while you work on the equipment.
If a 4-20 mA current source is not available to control
the FIELDVUE controller, you can perform the following procedure by removing the digital valve controller
and actuator cover. Then connect a regulated air supply to the 1/8-inch NPT actuator port for FIELDVUE
controllers (see figure 1).

Installation
Refer to the System 9000 instruction manual, Form
5408, for additional or supporting information.
The following steps describe how to install the System
9000 actuator onto a Valtek Mark One valve.
1. Refer to steps 1 to 3 in the System 9000 instruction
manual, Form 5408 in the section entitled Changing
Actuator Action to remove the cover and FIELDVUE
positioner.
2. Place the standard Mark One split rings onto the
bonnet.
3. Place the System 9000 yoke over the split rings.
4. Position the yoke clamps and bolts onto the bonnet, so that the bolts can be accessed through the
yoke windows.

If a 4-20 mA current source is available, you can use

the FIELDVUE controller to stroke the actuator for the
following procedure. In this case, you will not need to
remove the cover or FIELDVUE controller, given the
unit is already set up for the desired valve travel.

5. Tighten the bolts in the yoke clamps per Mark One

requirements.

Travel can be checked by measuring the travel stop

projection past the proper surface for the desired fail
direction. Distances and surfaces are shown in the
System 9000 instruction manual, Form 5408.

7. Spin the jam nut all the way down on the stem.

6. Install the gland flange and proper bolting, tightened per Mark One requirements.

8. Spin the stem connector (with the boss facing

down) all the way down on the stem. See figure 2.

DESIRED TRAVEL
MEASUREMENT

The fail-open unit will already be against

the travel stops prior to applying air
pressure.
10. Stroke the actuator against the travel stops.
11. Stroke the actuator down the desired travel.
12. Spin the stem connector up until it touches the
end of the canister and align the stem connector holes
with holes in the end of the canister that are 90 degrees from the yoke windows (opposite the gland
flange).
13. Install the stem connector bolts and washers and
tighten as far as possible by hand.

14. If necessary, stroke the canister up and away

from the valve to allow access to the stem connector
bolts with an open end wrench.
15. Tighten the bolts until the stem connector is flush
with the end of the canister and torque to 15 lbfSft.
16. Follow the procedure entitled FIELDVUER Instrument Installation in the System 9000 instruction manual, Form 5408.
