Coming Down The Mountain- Representation of Disability.

The first shot of the opening sequence of coming down the

mountain starts of with a top shot of the bedroom. The
shots show the difference between he two brothers. One
side of the room is messy, colour full and uses props like
toys. Right side of the room is dull, neat and uses props like
posters and books this automatically shows us a difference
that separates both brothers. This shot could also signifies
their personalitys, with the disabled brother being childish
and messy and the other brother being dull. The cameras
then does a medium close up of the brother , so the audience
can see his facial expression more clearly. The voice over at
the beginning starts of with last summer I decided to kill
my brother this would create questions in the audience
mind, which is an enigma code, and question who is really
disabled This is because disabled people are usually
portrayed as having a twisted and unnormal mind set. This
is like binary opposition as murder is something dark and
evil, while brother is usually portrayed as protection and
love. The camera creeps around the brother talking as if the
ideas are circling his head as he focuses on his brother. The
non-diegetic music in the background doesnt really fit the
theme with murder but rather is fun and up beat.
The next scene is taking place in there kitchen., at breakfast
time. The medium close up shot of the brother shows him
examining his breakfast before putting it into his mouth.
This shows that hes slowly taking in whats happening
around him. The disabled brother is clearly spoilt more than
his sibling, we can tell as his parents let him have an
unreasonable amount of breakfast sparing non-for the
normal brother. However this creates sympathy for the
disabled boy rather than the normal brother, just because he
is disabled. This shows the audience that the disabled boy
gets special treatment. the disabled brother doesnt think
before he speaks. He blurts out what eves on his mind. I

need a poo this is not a normal thing to blurt out to your

family especially when they are all trying to eat. The
disabled brother obviously gets extra sympathy as his
normal brother is told by his dad to make sure that he
doesnt make a mess and is told that its his responsibly just
because hes his brother. This shows that the disabled
brother is always in need of assistance even for small things
that should be dont itself.
While both brothers are walking toward the bus stop, they
both walk at different paces. The disabled brother walks
considerably slower than the able brother. This could show
that the disabled brother is slower at a large majority of
things. The able brother might also be trying to get away
from his disabled half. This shows us the connection
between the two brothers and how the disability has
effective their relationship. While waiting for the bus the
disabled brother plays with a slinky. This shows how hes
still a child and gets easily distracted, as waiting for the bus
is shot with him trying to entertain himself, while his
brother just sits at the bus stop. This show shows how the
disabled brother can not control his mind and tries to stay
busy at all times., just like a child hes impatient.
When the bus arrives we see that its red. This connotes
them living in London, as well as thee accents. They talk in a
British accent, but with some slang involved this shows their
class (lower class). The disabled boy talks , quietly and slurs
his words, showing hes not confident in hi speech. We see
this when his able brother gives him some money to go home.
The disabled brother feels this is wrong but listens to his
brother anyway. This could show us how he has a low selfesteem. This could be because he knows hes disadvantaged
at some stage and feels other are better than him. He might
not even rust his own mind and depends on the mind-set of
his brother.
