Painting
Example of an incident

Mohamed is painting a wall. After

working for several hours, he falls to the
floor, intoxicated by the paint he used.
Could this incident have been
prevented?
Yes, Mohamed should have read the
label on the paint container before
starting work, and he should have worn
the recommended PPE. Training on
Hazardous Materials is also necessary.

Painting
Upon completion of this course, workers will be able to:
Clearly identify the risks and hazards associated with each step
in a painting job.
Complete a painting job safely on the site.
Recognize the preventive measures available for painting.

Evaluation: You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire at the end

of the course and hand it in to the instructor.

Painting
Introduction

Painting is often done on a construction site: when new

equipment arrives, during building renovations, etc. Such jobs
present a risk for Guelb site workers.

Painting
Definition

Painting can include:

Initial painting: when equipment and some types of machines
arrive on the site. Painting provides good protection and rapid
identification.
Repairs: Some repair work requires cleaning a structure and
applying a new paint system (sand blasting, sanding).

Painting
Definition

A painter is a worker who is trained

in mixing, transporting and using
all types of paint safely.
Other workers can participate in
paint work if they have taken the
following courses:
Painting

Hazardous Materials

Painting
Definition

Pressure washing is a kind of washing technique that uses a

compressor. Pressurized water is sprayed on a structure to
remove a coat of paint.

Painting
Definition

Sandblasting is a stripping method that uses a compressor.

Sand is sprayed at high pressure on a structure to remove a coat
of paint.

10

Painting
Definition

Brushes and rollers are used for simple and small paint jobs.
They allow for uniform applications.

11

Painting
Definition

Paint guns are used for large paint jobs and require the use of a
compressor.

12

Painting
Associated risks

What is the risk to the workers in this situation?

13

Painting
Associated risks

When painting, the painter must be sure that other workers

around his work site do not become intoxicated; the other
workers must make sure they do not inhale paint fumes.

14

Painting
Here are a few questions:
What courses are required to painting work on the site?

Why must a worker take a Painting course before using

paint?

16

Painting
Preparation

A work area must be clearly defined and

indicated before starting painting:
Provide an area large enough so that
unauthorized workers do not come in
contact with the paint or its fumes.
Provide safe access to the area.
ENTRY

17

Painting
Preparation

Other items must be present before starting work to ensure

worker safety:
Have an extinguisher near the work.
Have a first-aid kit nearby.
Know the location of spill kits near the work area.

Know the emergency exits and use them if needed, such as in

the case of breathing apparatus failure.

EMERGENCY
EXIT
18

Painting
Preparation

Workers must familiarize themselves with

the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
for the product they are using:
What PPE is required?
What to do in case of contact with skin?
What protective measures are needed?

19

Painting
Preparation

Ventilation is vital when painting to ensure

adequate air quality.
Outdoor jobs do not required additional
ventilation.
Work in an enclosed space must have
external ventilation (see Confined Spaces
course).

Indoor work must have ventilation that is

adequate for the conditions. A fan or air
capture system can be used.

20

Painting
Preparation

When painting inside a building, you must consider the direction

of the paint fumes.
The room must be ventilated using fans.
Windows must be open.

21

Painting
Preparation

Weather conditions are important factors

for painting. The time needed for the task
and the drying time must be taken into
account before starting.

Never do any painting when:

A sand storm is approaching;
Night is falling.

22

Painting
Here are a few questions:
Which document contains information about the PPE to
wear and the first-aid measures for all substances used?

How can good air quality be maintained when painting?

What weather conditions must be taken into consideration when
painting outdoors?
Which courses must workers have taken to do painting in an
enclosed space?

24

Painting
During work

Painting must be done using a cartridge mask in addition to the

basic PPE. The mask filters toxic paint fumes and protects the
worker. Masks must be changed regularly.

25

Painting
During work

Fall protection is required when working at heights.

=
Over 1.8 metre

26

Painting
Types of work

Lifting equipment is often used for painting

work:
Lift platforms must be operated by
certified operators and must be inspected
regularly.
Scaffolding must be inspected and
approved.

27

Painting
Types of work

Paint guns are sometimes

used. They require the use of a
compressor to supply them with
air. You must always:
Mark off the work space
around the compressor;
Wear hearing protection;

Make sure you have safety

chains on the air line.

28

Painting
Here are a few questions:
What PPE is required for painting?
What must workers have when painting at a height of more than
1.8 metres?

30

Painting
Drying time

After the work is done, make sure that the painted area remains
well marked during the drying period:
Drying times vary depending on the paint used (it is indicated on
the Work Plan).
Drying times will be greatly accelerated by adequate ventilation.

31

Painting
Waste

When the work is finished:

Never throw the rest of the paint on the ground.
Always put it in the sorting areas where the
waste can be recovered.

32

Painting
Spills

In case of a paint spill:

Apply the Spill Procedure (see Hazardous
Materials course);

Notify your supervisor;

Make sure the area is clean by treating the
spill.

33

Painting
Cleanup

Equipment must be cleaned after

each use:
Use a solvent provided for paint
cleanup.
Safety goggles are required
for this step.
Gloves help limit exposure
to the paint.

34

Painting
Here are a few questions:
What must workers do in the event of a paint spill?
What PPE is required when cleaning painting equipment after
the job is finished?

35

Painting

Any questions?

36

Painting
Remember:

Paint is a hazardous material: the Material Safety Data Sheet

and the course on Hazardous Materials must be consulted.

Hazardous material toxic fumes propagate through the air:

Ventilation is essential.
An area must be marked off to prevent other workers from
coming into contact with the paint or its fumes.

A cartridge mask must be worn with the basic PPE when

painting.
