Tutorial 4 : Public Speaking

Activity : Analysing text of speech
Following is the text of part of a speech. Read the text of the speech and try to answer
the questions that follow (based on what you have learnt in Lecture 4), and your tutor will
discuss them at the end:Good morning ladies and gentlemen.
1.
Does your day begin with shouts and arguments? Do you go to school in a
bad mood because you've been yelled at, or because you argued with your parents?
Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Frank Godfrey and the topic of my speech for
today is, The Effects of Bad Mood on our Life. The purpose of my speech is to
persuade you to think about the consequences of being in a bad mood in the
morning, and in my speech, I will share with you two tips on how not to start your day
with a bad mood.
2.
First and foremost, bad moods caused by morning chaos will affect your
workday performance. This is because the chaos you experience in the morning
can put you in a bad mood and affect your performance throughout the day. You will
not be able to concentrate and focus on whatever you are doing, simply because
you are being very emotionally disturbed. As such, very often when we encounter
such situations, we make more mistakes than we normally do and this is where more
bad things will happen to us during the rest of the day.
3.
Nevertheless, you can improve your mood and your school performance by
adding more time to your morning schedule. You can do this by setting your alarm
clock to go off one hour earlier. Thus, when you wake up earlier, you will have more
time to prepare yourself and you will not be in a rush to do things or forget to do or to
take anything important.
4.
Furthermore, you should also have your breakfast to improve your mood. If
you skip breakfast, you are making a harmful health decision. However, when you
have your breakfast in the morning, you will not feel hungry and you will have more
energy and will be able to focus better for the rest of the day. Hence, you will be in a
good mood that morning.
5.
In conclusion, I know we all like to sleep and it is hard to get up in the
morning, but make a special effort to wake up earlier and have your breakfast, and I
can assure you that the reward will be great and you will not end up in a bad mood.
Thank you.
