AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFICACY OF

SHATADHOUTA GHRITA APPLICATION IN CONTACT POISONING
CAUSED BY BHALLATHAKA BEEJA. (Semecarpus anacardium Linn)

6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:

6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY
Bhallataka (Semecarpus anacardium Linn.,Anacardiaceae) is mentioned under Upavisha1
group in many Ayurvedic classics and it is also described as a poisonous medicinal plant in Drugs
and Cosmetic Act, India (1940)2. Bhallataka has been used for medicinal and non-medicinal
purpose since ancient times. Tarry oil present in the pericarp of the fruit contain Anacardic Acid
that contains urushiols, which cause blisters on contact. So there is every chance of accidental
poisoning causing contact dermatitis in children, and also in adults during the time of Bhallataka
shodhana.
In the treatment of contact poisoning by Bhallataka beeja, application of Shatadhouta
Ghrita as an extreme potent alleviator has been mentioned in Kriya Kaumudi 3. Other references
such as topical application of Shatadhouta Ghrita in treating Visarpa 4(Herpes zoster) is mentioned.
Dalhanacharya has cited that, Goghrita has Vishaghna property5.
Hence an experimental study to evaluate the efficacy of application of Shatadhouta Ghrita,
as a Visha hara dravya in contact dermatitis caused due to Bhallataka beeja has been taken.
6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Review of literature include a thorough screening of Ayurvedic texts, contemporary
Ayurvedic literatures, modern texts and internet sources to collect sufficient data. Some of the
texts are as follows,
The preparation, ingredients and indication of Shatadhouta Ghrita is available in.

6.3 OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

To study the Visa-hara property of Shatadhauta Ghrita in contact poisoning due to

Bhallathaka beeja.

6.4 HYPOTHESIS
H0- There is no effect of Shatadhauta Ghruta in blister`s caused by Bhallathaka beeja.
H1- There is significant effect of Shatadhauta Ghruta as a Visha-hara dravya in blisters caused by
Bhallathaka beeja.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

7.1 SOURCE OF DATA
A) Literary source:

Major literary source will be collected from Ayurvedic classical textbooks.

Information will be collected from modern texts, internet and relevant research
literature also.

B) Experimental sources:
Semecarpus anacardium Linn :- Seed of this plant is used after authentically
identifying.
Raw drugs required for the preparation of Shatadhouta Ghrita will be collected
from natural source.
Preparation of Shatadhouta Ghrita will be carried out in Alva`s Ayurveda Medical
College.
Animals for the study will be provided from animal house of Alva`s Ayurveda
Research Centre, Moodbidri.
C) Analytical source:

7.2

Analytical study will be carried out in Alva`s Ayurveda Medical College.

1. Organoleptic characters.
2. Physico-chemical analysis.

MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR THE STUDY:

o Seeds of Semecarpus anacardium Linn.
o Shatadhouta Ghrita.
o Facilities for Analytical study.
o Experimental Albino rats (wistar) and Animal house facilities.

METHOD OF COLLECTION OF DATA

1) Pharmaceutical Study:

Shatadhouta Ghrita will be prepared as per Susruta Samhita reference6.

2) Analytical Study:
The sample of Shatadhouta Ghrita will be analyzed with the following tests.
A) Organoleptic Characters
a. Colour
b. Taste
c. Odour
d. Appearance
B) Physico-ChemicalAnalysis
a. pH
b. Refractive index
c. Loss on Drying
d. Specific Gravity
e. Saponification Value
f. Iodine Value
g. Acid Value
h. Rancidity Test

3) Experimental study:
Three groups of six albino rats, not less than eight weeks old weighing about 150200 gms will be taken for experimental study to assess the blister healing property of Shatadhota
Ghrita in contact poisoning caused by Bhallataka beeja, from animal house of Alva`s College of
Ayurveda, Moodbidri.

The blister will be inflicted on rats by external application of Bhallataka beeja niryasa. Totally animals are
divided into 3 groups each group containing 6 animals.

Total no of Animals: 18
Route of administration: External application.
Inclusion criteria:
Not less than eight week old adult albino rats of both sexes weighing about 150-200gms will
selected in random.
Exclusion Criteria:
Diseased rats, rats under trial for other experiments and rats below 150gms and more than
200gms.
Interventions:
Duration of experiment: 21days.
Method of application: The Shatadhouta Ghrita is applied over the inflicted wound daily and the
rate of epithelialization is assessed on 7th, 14th and 21st day.
Assessment Criteria:
The fur from the dorsal part of the albino rats will be removed with the help of a razor. The area
has to be marked and apply the sap of the nut shell to the skin of the albino rats externally. Then

wound margins are traced on a trace paper from the day of wounding and inspected for the
percentage of the wound closure on 7th, 14th and 21st day of creating the wound.

Experimental Parameters:
The animals are inspected for the healthy closure of wound and the same is assessed based on the
physical parameters,
1. Wound contraction
2. Duration of healing.

Statistical Plan:
Appropriate test for statistical analysis will be used.

7.3 Does the study require any investigations or interventions to be conducted on Patients or
humans or animals? If so, please describe briefly:
Yes, the study will be conducted on experimental Albino rats (wistar) or animals.

7.4 Has ethical clearance been obtained from your institution in case of 7.3?
Yes, clearance has been obtained from the ethical committee constituted in the institution.
