Problem 2

(20 point)

A 5-g bullet moving with an initial speed of 400 m/s is fired into a 1-kg
wooden block and it gets embedded in it, as shown in the figure. The block initially at
rest at point A on a frictionless horizontal surface, is connected to a spring with a force
constant k = 900 N/m. After impact the system (block and bullet) moves a distance x to
the right, after which it comes to a temporary stop at point B.

A uniform solid cylinder and a solid sphere are placed side by side at the top
of an incline of height H = 4 m, as shown in the figure below. The radii and masses of
the two objects are equal, R = 0.2 m and m = 2 kg. If they are released from rest and
roll without slipping, determine:

Problem 4

(20 point)

A horizontal platform in the shape of a circular disk rotates in a horizontal


plane about a frictionless vertical axle as shown in the figure. The disk has a mass M =
100 kg and radius R = 2 m. While a student whose mass is m = 60 kg is standing at the
center of the disk, it rotates with angular speed of 4 rad/s. When the student walks
slowly a distance r from the center of the disk toward its rim, the angular speed
decreases to 2 rad/s at constant angular acceleration.
a) Find the moment of inertia of the system when the student is standing at the
