STANLEY & UPPER BRISBANE | NOV 2014

Continuing drought conditions across South east Queensland are presenting

significant challenges to producers in the region

Drought management
With no respite from drought conditions and a poor seasonal outlook, it is
timely for us to review some of the long-held key points discussed at recent
dry season management sessions held in conjunction with DAFF officers.

Have a plan: sound business principles are most important in tough times.

Make early, informed decisions: know the climate outlook, water supplies,
prices and selling or feeding options. Forage budgeting is fundamental as
you can set threshold dates for action based on available feed.

Consider reducing livestock numbers: normal sales, production feed and

agistment are all options worth considering.

Supplementary feeding: is it worth it? Do the sums. Cost nutrients and

target the most limiting nutrient - energy/protein. Segregate stock to match
feed requirements. Consider early weaning, gradual changes with feeds,
weed spread and erosion issues as well as parasite control.

Beware the break: when we do get some rain consider how weak stock
will fare on green pick, the importance of spelling pastures and weed
management.

Stay healthy: its the most important thing! Share the load by talking to
family and friends and seek support if you are anxious or concerned.

There are a variety of drought management resources available from fact

sheets, booklets and webinars to online calculators for comparing feeds and
marketing stock. Contact Bruce for copies of those handed out at the recent
workshops. Important contacts for accessing support and assistance including
drought assistance schemes, rural financial counsellors, and social and
community services are available via the Queensland Government websites:
www.daff.qld.gov.au/environment/drought and www.futurebeef.com.au.
